Since I still have a gushing idealist trapped somewhere deep inside that wants to share his love of music with the world, I thought I'd recommend this soundtrack. You Are Empty... Must be the coolest name for a game soundtrack since No Reality. Its the soundtrack for a PC first-person shooter, composed by Russian composer Dimitriy Dyachenko (Дмитрий Дьяченко). Its a dark, alluring, and very eclectic mix of industrial, ambient, hard rock, electronic/techno, and even some waltz and old Soviet-style bombastic anthems (to fit with the theme of the game). Its one of those rare VGM OSTs that comes around once in a while (Silent Hill, Baroque, Siren, Alice, Eternal Darkness, Shadow Hearts, Demento... ) carrying some really good dark atmospheric music with it. I recommend it to anyone who digs any of the aforementioned atonal, unmelodic masterpieces (if you're only in it for the hummable melodies, however, this is not gonna be your cup of tea).

Its a limited release of 1000 copies, if you're interested you can order it from the publisher, Keep Moving Records. They're based in Moscow, Russia, so I guess some people are hesitant to buy from them. I was too, but I decided to risk it, and I had a good experience, they're reliable, the customer service communication was in perfect English, and the package arrived fast by International Priority. Oh, and the price for the CD - $7 - wasn't too shabby either if we're talking official VGM!

i reviewed this on OSV. There's no question that the soundtrack is the best thing about the game (crappy FPS). Didnt blow my mind but I am happy to support KMR. They're a great organization.

I didn't think much of it. Rather uninteresting.

Okay, to be completely honest, I can't even recall most of the music. All I know is that it failed to impress me.

Oh shit, what? Downloading like the Fist of the North Star. Will post impressions later tonight after I get home from work.

Of course, this wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that you're Estonian? tongue Just kidding. wink

Just make sure you get a decent rip. Some music needs higher-quality encoding more than other music, and the YAE OST is definitely an instance where I'd recommend the original CD or a lossless rip to do it justice, as it is a very textured and multi-layered work. 128kb/s mp3s completely muffles the music here, it felt like turning the lights on in a completely dark room when I replaced the 128-rip I had downloaded with my own FLAC one.

You Are Empty is indeed a good soundtrack in the ambient horror category. While I'm not the biggest fan of this genre, I still appreciate listening to it when I'm in the mood. The Silent Hill albums are pretty much top when it comes to it, but it's always nice to discover new music. By the way, do you know about the Penumbra soundtrack? It was released earlier this year and contains material you should enjoy.

Searching online has yielded nothing in the way of a torrent for the YAE soundtrack. Got a high quality rip you'd be willing to help a brother out with?

Sure, check your e-mail.

Thanks for the recommendation, Rimo!

I really tried to enjoy it, but it honestly came off as a bit bland. I think it's one of those gems I will enjoy more once I get some context behind it when I play the actual game. Xenogears OST was the same for me if you can believe that.

You were right, though. The quality was superb.
