I don't know if it's just the aging tech or what, but recently, I cannot play PS1 games on my PS2 without the screen "jumping" up and down. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, any recommendations on how to address this issue? Unusually, Google has proved useless to me here.

EDIT: It's a slim model, if that helps.

That's a bummer, the PS2's ability to play and slightly upscale PS1 titles is one of it's best features. I seriously cannot play PS1 games on the PS1 because of the difference although I have to with Wild Arms. For some reason I have my own PS2 problem with that one, it loves to freeze every now and then when entering a battle.

As for your problem, it sounds like a connection problem to me. Is your AV cable in ok shape? Sometimes they start to crack where the cable comes into the plug that plugs into the Playstation.

You should definitely get a PS3 then.
I couldn't even go back to playing PSX games on PS2 anymore.

Fixed it. It was my TV in all actuality. Now I can actually give Breath of Fire 4 a go without the screen being all weird.

I actually just rebought BoF4 a few days ago... $32 stung but it's in like-new condition. $17 for the black boardered Silent Hill I got today felt like a better deal. Ironically, I've never even played a Silent Hill game.

Simply put, this store is flippin' awesome as is the owner. They've pretty much taken all my business away from EB. It's so nice to go into a store, be able to talk (and buy) retro games, and not feel like like you're ten years behind the game. While I may have to wait awhile for something to come in, it's so nice to know eBay is not my only outlet for these games and I don't have to go through the hassle of an auction which inflates the price.

This is practically the only reason I'd want a PS3, but I don't have a HD TV. Unfortunately, by the time I get one, finding a launch model with backwards compat might be hard and pricy.

All PS3s play PSX games.  The difference in models only affects PS2 games.

The PS3's compatibility with PS1 games isn't as good as it was with PS2 though. PS2 does it through hardware, PS3 does it with emulation. And while PS3 upscales the resolution, it doesn't smooth out the 3D graphics in a similar way as the PS2. Vagrant Story looks much better on PS2 than it does on PS3.
