So, my rediscovery of the brilliance that is the Sea Mother's tale from Shadow Hearts 1 (begins at 1:50 in the video) in one of the threads below gave me the idea to start up a thread about bad voice acting in video games. Which games come to your mind in this department? Needless to say, YouTube-links would be very appreciated!

Here is a top five, including Devil May Cry, Shenmue, Deep Fear, Resident Evil (no shit!), and House of the Dead 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KI8Schos7g0

Another compilation, this time 50 hilarious one-liners fired one after another: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulbotKa5LnM

More complied: Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yssnXJAsS0
Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAtyhhahJ_E

Then there's of course the immortal "Victory to this feather" from PS2 Rygar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGvLJ3QObHw (around 6:25)

Your picks? Let's put our collective knowledge together and make this a depository of great voice acting worth remembering!

Apparently much money was saved on voice actors in the past.... Some of that stuff is so bad it's awesome.
The one compilation video had the "whistle scene" from FFX, but I personally found the laughing scene to be more embarrassing:

And the Japanese version is even worse. It's like they're barking (starts at 7:30):

The JP version is VASTLY superior to the English dub in general, but yeah, that scene made my skin crawl too.

I just think it's pretty much impossible to act "laughing" in a convincing way.

I'll second Shemue. The game's narrative suffered not only from shitty acting, but abominable translation, too.

I can't stand pretty much every JRPG's voice acting, especially when the voice actors are from those in anime. Not sure why, but just sounds like retards.

I accept your challenge! The montage on Clip C from this page should be enough, but really all of them are horrendous.

If you haven't yet experienced the pain that is Chaos Wars voice acting, now's as good a time as any.

Here is the butchered job they did for the Shadow Hearts: Covenant characters.

Good
Brave Fencer Musashi
Mega Man Legends (Capcom gets it right!)
Metal Gear Solid
So bad they're good:
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Mega Man X4 (Colonel's Australian accent is boss!) Iris' Japanese pre battle quotes are so hysterical they can't be good.
Resident Evil
Syphon Filter 1, 2, 3
Mega Man 8
Bad, just bad:
Mega Man X7 (enough said)

Awesome, Panda! That one is indeed a serious contender for the throne! However, I still think Sea Mother is the queen. Something about the pacing and the drawn-out horrendousness of it all just takes the crown.

Also, I forgot the early Alone in the Dark games, they had some hilariously over-the-top stuff. Check out this clip from AITD3, and begin at exactly 6:00 in the video. Man, there sure must've been a lot of saliva all over the place after that recording session...

Totally forgot this, especially Flame Hyenard. BURN BURN TO THE GROUND! OH MY EARS PLEASE MAKE THIS STOP

LOL, that was indeed painful! They didn't even get the names of the characters straight (Uru? Nicole?), and Karen sounds incredibly apathetic, like she just overdosed on tranquilizers or something.

I found a series of classic bad video game voice acting, reverently introduced by some old mock drama critic. Having a bad conscience because you're still a gamer at 25 or 30? Well, check this guy out:

Mortal Kombat 4

Mega Man 8

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Castle Shikigami 2

House of the Dead 2 is so bad it's great.

Most of the times I agree, but the MGS games did occasionally sport some deliciously corny lines, lol.

If we are to look at the other side of the spectrum and talk about games with great voice acting, the MGS-series is definitely up there. But the best one will always be the Legacy of Kain-series. Even the first game had great voice acting, and it was released in 1996, when the staple for acting in video games was Resident Evil 1 and the like. If you want a radical antidote to some of the guilty-pleasure horrendousness we've mentioned/shown in this thread, check these out (all are from Soul Reaver 2, 2001):

Looking back on the series, it is startling to realize just how much better the original PSOne Metal Gear Solid's voice work is over its sequels. (Don't even get me started on The Twin Snakes.)  Whether it was because the writing got more heavy-handed, or because the voice directors changed, MGS1 remains to be the sharpest and most well acted of the bunch.

I make it a point to listen to the Briefing Files every so often:

-Briefing Part 1
-Briefing Part 2
-Briefing Part 3

Tellin' it like it is, sister! The Twin Snakes was definitely a huge step down from the original in the voice acting department. I remember watching my brother play through it and thinking "wow, even though they use the same actors and the same script, this take feels really off. The voice directors really screwed up on this one".

I agree that the original MGS had the best voice acting in the series, and indeed one of the best in all of gaming history. Its a perfect example of great acting being able to infuse a work with so much personality that it manages to stay with you long after experiencing it. To this day, when I get confused and/or surprised over something in real life, I sometimes get the irresistible urge to go Metal Gear...?! It can't be...! smile
