Angela Dec 27, 2010 (edited Jan 11, 2012)

Again inspired by SonicPanda's picks in the VIDEO GAMES 2010 thread, and continuing the trend set by last year's topic: What are your favorite, standout, and/or most listened to video game music tracks of 2010?  They can be from officially released original or arranged soundtracks, fan-made contributions, or games that never even got an album release.

The main requisite from last year's poll was that all songs had to have been released that same year.  In order to make this one a little more accessible, let's extend it to any favorites you may have acquired throughout 2010, regardless of release date.

Your mileage may vary, but I'm capping off with a top 20 model for my 2010-released picks, and a separate top 10 for anything before it.  Though it isn't necessary, do try and supply music links whenever possible.  Share the love, yeah?

Tim JC Dec 27, 2010 (edited Dec 27, 2010)

I'm going to be lazy and just post one. For me, the Nier OST dominated everything else I've heard this year, and would comprise most of my picks. Xenoblade probably had my second favorite slew of tracks, and I had a number of favorites from FFXIII and FFXIV but I don't remember the track names. Ys SEVEN as well.

Anyway, Emil - Sacrifice is my standout track from Nier. I know the "Song of the Ancients" and Kaine's themes are probably more popular, not to mention the boss music and captivating dungeon themes, but this one gave me the most chills.

I'll add that I LOVE the retro track The Legend of Nier: 8-bit Heroes from the recent add-on/arrange album. (Not so much the second half with the digitized voice though.) In a way, it proves the timeless quality of the music.

Cedille Dec 27, 2010

I'm pretty sure I'm missing lots of gems, so no fine ordering.

Final Fantasy XIII / Sabers Edge
Final Fantasy XIII / Dust to Dust
Espgaluda II Black Label / Bonus Track1 (Unused Music)
Espgaluda II Black Label / Stage6
Nier / Kainé / Escape
Nier / Emil / Karma
Do-Don-Pachi Dai-Fukkatsu BLACK LABEL / Xanadu (Stage 2-B)
Tekken 6 / Fallen Colony (G ~Blast ver.~)
Tekken 6 / Arisa
God Eater / An Approaching Nightmare
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles / Alfitaria Capital City
Ketsui Extra / EVAC INDUSTRY
Xenoblade / Confrontation with the Enemy
Xenoblade / Beyond the Sky

Amazingu Dec 29, 2010 (edited Dec 29, 2010)

I suck at ranking stuff, so I'll just state my favorite tracks of this year, in alphabetical order of the game title.

Deadly Premonition: York and Zach
Dragon Quest IX Symphonic Suite: Angelic Land
End of Eternity: Lower World
Final Fantasy XIII: Mount Yaschas
Heavy Rain: Painful Memories
Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep: Stellar Symphony
Last Ranker: I seriously cannot choose.
NieR: The Lost Forest
PPPPPP: Difficult. Probably: Potential for Anything
Rockman 10: Solar Inferno
Xenoblade: This one gets 2 because of being awesome: Snowy Mt. Valac,
and: Field of the Machinae
But really, pretty much the whole soundtrack applies.
EXCEPT for Beyond the Sky. What is WRONG with you people!? wink

You got an aversion to pretty melodies and beautiful vocal performances?

I have an aversion to generic ballads from a washed out composer.

And I hate vocal performances in general.

Cedille Dec 29, 2010

I found Xenoblade OST not so inspiring on my superficial listen but there were two tracks that immediately captured my ears (interesting is they were the exact same ones as Angela's, we even posted the same youtube links tongue). Definitely Mitsuda's one of the best vocal themes. I should play the game to appreciate the OST more, but I'd pass it since I already watched the game play for over 50 hours in total via live streaming and I couldn't stand the story.

As for my picks, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Crystal whatever was released in 2009 so doesn't qualify. Also, the Emil song I love is this one.

You watched a live stream for a total of 50 hours!?
Why would you do that!?

The story, I admit, is not the game's strongest point, although character interaction can be quite good at times, and the cast is generally likeable. Shulk can be a pain in the ass and on the ears though.

Figured I'd revive this thread since no replies have been posted since last year (ha!).  All these picks are in alphabetical order and were based off my memory and Last.fm stats (very handy) but I'm still probably missing some tracks.  The links go to a high quality mp3 in my Dropbox which is playable right in your browser.

My word! Great find!

She has a heavenly voice, she's practically meditated upon these pieces, on the source material and context in order to create profound lyrics, and the instrumentation's some strange fantasy medieval mix of Celtic, renaissance, and the like!

This's isn't just a one shot either, she has quite a body of work! Mama mia!

Apparently, she's released her own original album: http://www.erutanmusic.com/

With just that single link, I have become a raving fan!

Guess I've some new free music to listen to, to help me get to sleep at night!

If you haven't figured it out yet, I just love this style of music! (@u@)

I think Yuzo Koshiro's "Battlefield - The First Campaign" on Etrian Odyssey III blasts everything out of the water.

Definitely gonna have to check out Erutan sometime.

Zealboy Jan 3, 2011 (edited Jan 3, 2011)

I actually did not listen to a lot of new game music this year.  My recent Play-Asia order has a handful of stuff that I'm sure could be included on this list.
Like Tim JC, Nier dominated for me also, and I could pick a ton of tracks for it, but I'll just pick my absolute favorite one.  I could also pick a handful from Xenoblade but will just choose what is probably my favorite from that one as well.  It is NOT Beyond the Sky.  I am so incredibly disappointed with that song.  I feel it is so weak compared to Mitsuda's vocal songs in Xenogears and Xenosaga.  My Xenoblade track has already been chosen however.  Cheers to you, Amazingu!

Nier: The Wretched Automatons
Lord of Vermillion 2: Temple at the End of the World
Xenoblade: Field of the Machinae
Final Fantasy XIV: Answers   I am aware this one is not well liked.  I love it though!

End of Eternity contained some ok stuff mixed in, but nothing worth noting.  Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers was also an incredible album that got a lot of playtime in 2010, but as I got it in December 2009, I didn't list anything from it.  Final Fantasy XIII didn't have anything good enough to compete with the 4 tracks above.  ...And sadly that's close to everything I checked out in 2010.  Massive Shimomura order incoming though.

Had these in mind since way back when but never got around to posting.  All but the last one can be listened to on their album pages.

Top VGM piece of 2010:

Symphonic Fantasies: Music from Square Enix - Fantasy II: Secret of Mana
Nothing else comes close.  It doesn't matter that the original themes are well over a decade old, the arrangement itself is a work of art and astoundingly dramatic.

Runner-ups:

Symphonic Fantasies: Music from Square Enix - Fantasy I: Kingdom Hearts
I wasn't a KH fan at all but this arrangement is perfect.  Gives each and every theme an entirely new elegance and beauty.

Final Fantasy XIII Original Soundtrack Plus - M36A "The Gapra Whitewood"' Instrumental
Love the earthy New Age tones and the ambient effects.  Much better without the distracting vocals of the OST version.

Final Fantasy XIII Piano Collections - The Gapra Whitewood
And again.  Interestingly it's almost a completely different piece from the above; Hamauzu tailors it for piano perfectly.

Dragon Quest IX Symphonic Suite - Angelic Land
The standout theme of the soundtrack and a lovely arrangement.  It's impressive after all these years of Dragon Quest music to hear a new side to the series.

Dragon Quest IX Symphonic Suite - Beckoning ~ Dream Vision of our Town ~ Tavern Polka
There's nothing particularly new or ambitious about this piece but I love how it captures the charm of classic RPG town themes, especially the festive "Tavern Polka" bit.

The Last Ranker Original Soundtrack - The Flower Blooms on That Shore
Among several impressive pieces this one leaves the strongest impression over time.  Quaint but beautiful.  The violins make this soundtrack.

Xenoblade Original Soundtrack - Colony 9 / Night
I find this soundtrack highly overrated but there are some nice pieces to be found and this quiet New Age / world music hybrid is one of the more original of them.  Even better paired with its upbeat Native American-spirited companion piece "Colony 9".

NieR Gestalt & Replicant Original Soundtrack - The Dark Colossus Destroys All
Another overrated soundtrack but its most epic-leaning choral piece is also its best.  Reminds me of some of the more bombastic pieces in Shadow of the Colossus but in many ways is much better.

Gran Turismo 5 Original Soundtrack - Drive On Coins
One of the few really driving, upbeat pieces in a soundtrack too eclectic for its own good.  Synthy, high-energy drum 'n bass.
