Now, I realize the list is already large, but nevertheless this did surprise me:

I find it hard to believe that what they are doing is legal... and I'm even more surprised people still buy games from GameSuck. So, can you tell I don't like them?

TerraEpon Aug 25, 2011

A different story on this suggested that by doing this, they've pretty much given more advertisement for OnLive than it ever would have.

This only strengthens my resolve to buy retail copies of games whenever I can.

I can understand GameStop's position, but a more appropriate response would have been to refuse to sell the game.

The kicker is that Squenix had to publicly apologize for deceiving GameStop.  Guess we know who wears the pants in this relationship.

Apparently they did just that sometime later yesterday.

I like the title and article by the nydailynews:

SYSTEM UPDATE: Evil GameStop's 'Deus Ex' antics

"Square made a mistake. GameStop made a bigger mistake. But once again, the consumer is getting left out in the cold."

GameStop is now offering a $50 gift card to customers affected by its spat with Squenix.  This is an unusually generous gesture from the company, so someone higher up must have been concerned about all the negative PR around the "GameStop opens new games" headlines.

Wanderer Aug 27, 2011

I refuse to shop at GameStop. I buy most of my games from Amazon... or Best Buy, if I'm in the neighborhood (not that they're any better in many ways).

If that's the case, it would be nice if they just stopped opening new games.  I feel like I should get at least a slight discount for having had all kinds of folks' grody hands all over the case and manual before I buy a "new" game.

The sad reality is there really is no one ideal place to buy video games, especially if you like to buy video games whose titles don't start with "Call of" or "Madden."  If you like niche games, your only real choices are GameStop and Amazon.  With GameStop, you have to pre-order if you want a sealed copy and, depending on where you live, you have to pay sales tax, but you get the game on Day 1.  With Amazon, you might pay a little less for the game, avoid sales tax (depending on where you live), and know that you're getting a sealed copy, but you have to wait for it ($0.99 release day delivery is typically only offered on major releases, not niche titles).  Plus, there's the risk of having it stolen off your porch (risk varies depending on where you live) or being at the mercy of the postal system.

I'm kind of curious to see how Best Buy's video game sections will change once it starts introducing its "game store withing a store" concept.  My major problem with buying games from BBY is that it, like other mass market retailers, doesn't make a strong effort to get new games from the door to the floor fast enough.  The game might arrive at the store on Day 1, but it might not make it to the shelf for another several days.  I hope the new concept fixes that and isn't just a way of pimping used games.

If you live in an area where your mail is getting stolen, you really should just get a P.O. box.  They're not that expensive, and your mail gets kept locked up for you until you collect it.

I thought it was pretty common knowledge by now that gamestop opens new games, and often sells used games - that are in otherwise immaculate condition - as new. this isn't surprising either.

I've formally complained to gamestop about how they open new games. they say it's because they're trying to prevent theft, but how does opening a new game prevent theft? if anything, a person could easily remove a game from their shelves, and say they brought it in as one of their own as a trade-in. this's the argument I made, but they blatantly ignored me.

same case for me too, tho AMZN tends to have much better prices; e.g., check Sin & Punishment 2 for the Wii; still $50 in store, but you can get a brand new copy really cheap on AMZN: http://www.amazon.com/Sin-Punishment-St … 125&sr=1-1

sry about the double post, forum system seems not to let me amend my previous post, let me do it to this one tho
