I recently acquired a copy of Marvel Super Heroes for the Sega Saturn and can't help remember reading a review back in a (1997?) issue of Gamefan that the game can make use of the additional ram cart for smoother animation compared to the PSX rendition. Does anyone know if this true? I've looked the game up and can't find much on the Ram Cart outside the fact it's used for the tag team vs. games.

I don't know if it's true exactly, but I do seem to remember the exact same thing, so that pretty much MAKES it true as far as I'm concerned wink

I found a site with a list of games that support the ram cart but I don't want to post a link because the site made my anti-virus program go off with warnings. I'll post the info here for future reference however:

Sega Saturn Games That Use 1MB/4MB RAM Cart
For those of you that are interested, here are the Sega Saturn games that support my 1MB/4MB RAM carts. Most of these games require the RAM carts in order to play them.
The ones that have (OPTIONAL) do not require the cart, but will have better performance with the cart

4MB RAM:

Dungeons & Dragons Collection
Final Fight Revenge
Friends: Seishun no Kagayaki
Marvel Super Heroes
Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter
Noёl 3
Noёl 3 Limited Editon
Pocket Fighter (OPTIONAL)
Street Fighter Zero 3
Super Real Mahjong P7
Vampire Savior
X-Men vs. Street Fighter
Some Various Emulators

1MB RAM:
Astra Superstars
Cotton 2 (OPTIONAL)
Cyberbots (OPTIONAL)
Fatal Fury 3
Fighter’s History Dynamite
Friends: Seishun no Kagayaki
Groove On Fight
King of Fighters ’96
King of Fighters ’97
King of Fighters, The: Best Collection
KOF Double Pack: King of Fighters ’95 & ’96
Metal Slug
Noёl 3 Limited Editon
Noёl 3
Ragnagard
Real Bout Fatal Fury
Real Bout Fatal Fury Special
Real Bout Garou Densetsu Best Collection
Real Bout Garou Densetsu Special
Samuari Showdown IV
Samurai Showdown III
Samurai Spirits Best Collection
Samurai Spirits: Amakusa Kourin
Samurai Spirits: Zankurou Musouken
Super Real Mahjong P7
Super Real Mahjong P7 P’s Club Limited Edition
Waku Waku 7

So Marvel Super Heroes is the list. I'll have to nab a Ram Cart at some point; I looked on eBay and the few I saw were pretty pricey however. I think the game uses a three punch three kick setup so the Saturn controller is probably great to use for it - in theory. Maybe the d-pad won't destroy my thumb like the one on the PS controller does when playing Street Fighter-like fighters. (I have sensitive thumbs and can't seem to work up game-related calluses anymore.)

Still, despite the fact it isn't listed as optional I think the RAM cart is optional with MSH.

I seem to recall SF Alpha 2 using it as well and thus being the superior version in comparison to the PSX port.

Also, wasn't there a version of SFIII on Saturn that used this cart as well?

Cotton 2 but not Cotton Boomerang? How odd. One would think the other way around, if anything.

If I remember correctly, SFA2 didn't need the cart to have all animation intact and, yes, was far superior to the PS version, which had its animation butchered. While I vaguely remember talk of a SF3 release for Saturn, I don't think it ever materialised.

Yeah, a Google search seems to confirm that SF3 was planned at some point but never actually happened. It probably would've been a bit too much to handle.

Allow me to point out one infuriating aspect of the RAM cart for those of us with US Saturns.  You'll notice that all of the titles listed there are Japanese games.  If you have a US Saturn, you need an ST Key to play Japanese games, and a RAM cart to play the games on that list.  Unfortunately, they occupy the same cartridge slot in the system.  You have to boot up the machine with the ST Key inserted, wait for the game to start to load, then quickly swap out the ST Key for the RAM cart.  If you didn't get the timing just right, you had to reboot and try it again.  I had Vampire Savior, and it usually took me three to five tries to get the game to load properly.

That's why they made those 4 in 1 things and so forth.

Also, the reason 2d fighters still looked better on Saturn than PSX even without the cart is that Saturn simply had better hardware for it.

In fact, IIRC its 3d capabilities were a late addition added to it could so it compete with PSX (and we know how THAT turned out...)
