I know Angela usually posts this thread but...

Anyway, I'm eagerly awaiting the release of Nightwish's Imaginaerum on the 10th since it's been a while since their last effort Dark Passion Play. Definately looking forward to having some more non-Tarja material since some of that stuff hasn't aged to well IMO.

Gin Devo - Surface
Really great cold ambient music from the tracks I've listened to on youtube.

Yuzo Koshiro - Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 4

Oh shit, that's this month!? yikes
Well, that's a definite pick-up for sure then.

Also Resident Evil Revelations hits on the 26th, and I really liked the demo on the 3DS store, so I'll be picking that up too. Survival Horror ahoy this month!

I'm curious, what games are included in this?

I'm also taking that these HD updates are the "in" thing these days.

Wanderer Jan 4, 2012

I might rent FF XIII-2. Other than that, nothing for me. This is very much a "save money" month, after the ruthless spending of December.

Not the right thread to ask, but what's the music for this one like? aka...how does it stack up to the Genesis Sonic soundtracks?

I think those are the only new releases I'm supposed to get this month.

SH2 and SH3.
I have no idea why they omitted 4, or even 1, since 3 games in 1 collection seems to be the standard, but there you go.
You're also getting the version of SH2 that includes the extra Maria scenario.

It's feckin' awesome, and I KNOW that the_miker will tell you the same.
You're basically getting lots of remixes (GREAT remixes) of old themes from pretty much every major Sonic game ever released. It was pretty much my No.1 soundtrack of 2011, and, again, I think the_miker will agree wink

I think he would too. smile

Sonic Generations' music is pretty much all remixes and arrangements from the entire Sonic series, from the original Sonic the Hedgehog right up to Sonic Colors.  Essentially the Sonic Generations OST is the ultimate Sonic arranged album.  And if you're curious, the staff roll credits the music/remixes to Jun Senoue, Naofumi Hataya, Kenichi Tokoi, Tomoya Ohtani, Circuit Freq., Cash Cash, Crush 40, Richard Jacques, and Yutaka Minobe.  It goes on to list a lot of musicians and performers.  Here's a little sample I posted to my VGM blog a while back, a nice jazzy arrangement of Sonic 3's "Data Select" music.  Jun did a pretty rockin' remix of Chemical Plant Zone as well.

Of course I'm just talking about the soundtrack to the console version here.  The Sonic Generations OST includes the 3DS music as well, which I haven't even heard yet!

I'm thinking about getting Star Trek: The Next Generation -- The Next Level, the three-episode teaser disc for the HD remastering of TNG.

GoldfishX Jan 5, 2012

Thank you for the feedback, guys. I'll have to give this one some thought.

Qui-Gon Joe Jan 7, 2012

Just ordered from ebay the Mario Kart and Star Fox 64 3D OSTs.  I would probably pick up Pilotwings Resort and Wii Fit Plus as well just to have them, but they're not priorities and they're WAY cheaper in Japan (ugh, so is the DKC Returns CD based on the Yahoo Auctions....) so I'm going to wait and see if I might not be able to find those in Akihabara if I end up in Japan this summer.  Outside of those, that's all for this month for me.

Happy to have Nintendo soundtracks coming out - irritated the lengths one has to go through to get them!

Angela Jan 8, 2012

Along with the Soulcalibur V Original Soundtrack, I think the only must-buy for me this month is the UK home release of BBC One's Sherlock - Series 2.  Also, Series 1 is getting a soundtrack release!

Is that gorgeous cover for the Silent Hill HD Collection sticking?

the_miker Jan 10, 2012

Konami delayed the Silent Hill HD Collection until March 6th so it looks like Final Fantasy XIII-2 is my only gaming purchase this month.  Here's hoping the delay is so they can include Silent Hill 4 in the collection and/or add the original voices to Silent Hill 3.

Wait, what?
Are they taking out the original voices from SH3!?

I know they redubbed SH2, but you can choose which audio track you want.
Are you saying they also redubbed SH3, but aren't giving you the same option!?

Also, fat chance on SH4.
The bug testing necessary to include another full title would take FAR more than 2 months.

I've been listening to this and I have to say there's just too much bullshit going on in some of these tracks. I know that Tuomas Holopainen (the band's main creative force and synth player) has a thing for movie scores and I loved how he took that resource and made it his own on Dark Passion Play but here he seems so intent on knocking down the last remnants of the band's sound that isn't related to that.

Unfortunately, other problems crop as well. "Slow, Love, Slow" is an odd creature that finds Nightwish experimenting with Blues which isn't bad in and of itself but couple that with the fact some of the remaining material is too similar to stuff on the last album. "I Want My Tears Back" sounds too much like "Last of the Wilds" and "Turn Loose the Mermaids" mirrors the underwhelming "Meadows of Heaven" too closely.

Anyway, I'm sure it's going to take a few more listens for this to sink in but I just don't see it stacking up previous releases which is a shame given the four year wait. Have they jumped the shark? Time will tell....

They jumped the shark ages ago. tongue

OR I just can't get myself into listening even their older stuff anymore.

And my only January purchase so far is Angela Aki's newest album SONGBOOK. Kinda hoping to scram some dough to buy Fortune Summoners when it's out on 20th, but that 20 dollar pricetag on it is bit expensive at the moment.

You have that problem too? I can really pass on like 99% of their older material outside Dark Passion Play. The songs I can stomach from the albums from before that point I can count on my hands. One could see that as a bad thing but I'd rather just take that handful of songs and call it a day and forget the rest.

This has happened to many other bands I onced liked; I can narrow down what stays to a small pool. Stratovarius may have like 300 songs but I only want like ten of them.

Well, I can't actually listen their newer stuff either, Anette just doesn't feel like a good singer in my ears. Though, probably should give the Turunen-era another try.

Pellasos Jan 14, 2012

cd got released last month over here and i got it, like every other nightwish album. at first i was rather skeptical, but it grew on me by now. doesn't sound like the old NW at all, it's a new band now. i can deal with that. there is so much music around. if they stop to please me, i just move on.

they're very easy to listen to, that hasn't changed in my opinion. i still like their old stuff, but i don't listen to them on a weekly basis or so.

That's the album containing her various cover songs, right? Is it any good? I was kinda disappointed with her previous albums. Especially WHITE felt so boring an uninspired.

Yeah, it's all about covers, and thanks to it being only released this week and me not pre-ordering it, I haven't yet managed to listen it. But judging by the tracklist it has just two new covers; Madonna's Material Girl and Cyndi Lauper's True Colors. But seems that six of the older covers are new recordings (Will You Dance?, Without You, Today, Kiss from a Rose, A Song for You and It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday), so it's not just a plain rehash album. Though, how much different the new recordings are, that I don't know, gotta wait until I get my copy on my hands.
