How do we not have a designated thread for this incredible show yet?  I only became a fan myself late last year, when, ideally, I got caught up with the entirety of Series 1.  I say 'ideally', because BBC just wrapped up Series 2 on TV this month, and I was able to jump headfirst into the new episodes straight away.  Needless to say, it didn't take long for me to surmise that this is easily the smartest, engaging and most entertaining television I've seen in a good while.

More than the modern day contemporary spin working so well within Conan Doyle's classic framework, more than the terrific actors and performances (count me in as a newly christened "Cumberbitch", and more than the delightful David Arnold/Michael Prince musical score, I particularly dig the 90 minutes per episode format.  Each episode is essentially a full-length film, making for lean, but substantially fulfilling stories.  The plots are largely self-contained, but for anyone who decides to start in on the show, begin with Series 1; there's still a number of recurring threads and characters that play crucial roles in Series 2.

I know Smeg's a fan, but if anyone else is looking to get into Sherlock, now's the perfect time to get acquainted.  Series 1 is readily available, and PBS is planning to air the first episode of Series 2 stateside on May 6th.  Or, if you're like me and just couldn't wait, you'd have already imported the UK DVD home release that came out earlier this week.

My two favorite episodes?  Without a doubt, Series 2's "A Scandal in Belgravia" and "The Reichenbach Fall" -- which is saying something, considering how good Series 1's "A Study in Pink" and "The Great Game" were.

Because of the first episode of series 2 I have a new text tone on my phone.  I don't get many texts though, so that's probably good haha.

But I do love this series.  I have not had time to watch past series 2 ep 1 though. Must make time to do so.

I have heard that the BBC One series is quite good (have not seen it yet). However, it is NOT Sherlock Holmes, at least not for me. It's obvious that the producers decided to borrow the name, because after all who has not heard of the great detective Sherlock Holmes! Also, Hollywood has thrown in their (horrible) version of Sherlock Holmes in the past few years, so more free publicity. Still, it may be very good, but if you want to see Sherlock Holmes as originally intended, the Granda episodes are amazing.

The Jeremy Brett series is terrific, but by no means the be all end all adaptation of the character.  To me, the allure of Sherlock Holmes is that it's one of a very limited set of stories so potent in their literary stature, that they can easily stand up to a wide variety of interpretations.  I don't think there's been a Holmes adaptation I've seen that I haven't enjoyed in some capacity, but BBC's "Sherlock" is definitely one of the better ones.

4) Same as yours - Hounds of the Baskervilles was a bit too X-Filesy (although I loved that show, just didn't fit Sherlock very well).
5) None at all! I was sure of the end result seeing as it was based on The Final Problem (and that every adaptation likes to cover that at some point), but how he pulled it off? Not a clue. It did seem to me to be reminiscent of the basic idea in the most recent series of Moffat's *other* show, though
