i could only get about 15 or so without cheating.  There is a whole faq on the net with all the answers just in case it frustrates you or you wanted to finish it at work like i did earlier today.  =p

Amazingu Jun 13, 2012

I got about 30 on my own, then another 30 or so after buying screenshots.
It's harder than I thought it would be :S

vert1 Jun 13, 2012

I got 27 without hints. Some of the screenshots I unlocked look very obscure to me or their names have slipped my mind over time.

The Ducktales one was driving me crazy. I knew it was from some Nintendo game, but kept thinking it was some shooting game in space. ack!

Zane Jun 13, 2012

Pretty cool premise, but if you didn't have a Genesis you're pretty much screwed trying to figure those out. I got 32 (after hints), though... not bad!

Judgment Day Jun 13, 2012

Ha...I did a couple of tune contests a few years back, complete with a scoring system and money prizes. I'll give it a go when I'm off work wink

Smeg Jun 13, 2012

27 before hints, which helped me buy enough hints to figure 87 all said and done smile

Idolores Jun 13, 2012

I only got 24 before hints. 31 after.

XLord007 Jun 14, 2012

It took me several hours of Googling the info in the hints and screens, but I was able to get all 90 of the regular questions and the seven emeralds. I never found the three hidden questions. Maybe I should look at that FAQ one of you mentioned. It was a lot of fun trying to track down some of those obscure Genesis games that I never heard of.

Boco Jun 16, 2012

I got 23 just from the music and 40 using hints or screenshots. Not too bad, but I thought I would do better. Definitely a fun way to pass the time though! Lots of memories.

Raziel Jun 16, 2012

Got like 6 or 7 before hints, 31 after. Mostly because I skipped the 16-bit area myself, coming from a post-Soviet country and all (the early-mid nineties were flooded with Famicom clones and Playstation was introduced around 1997, but only the rich people could afford it; I know Genesis was a big thing in Russia, but don't think it was the same here). Anyways, I think it's a bit of a misnomer to call it 90s game music, it misses a good chunk and is mostly catered to Genesis fans.

What were some of the ones that were obscure to you? I think maybe I just have more familiarity with the Genesis than some folks.

So many, but Cosmic Spacehead, Zool, Puggsy, Dizzy, and other weird mascot characters gave me particular trouble.

Wow.

That's ... a really interesting story.

I've never even thought about that.

Sending you a PM now.

(also playing the game now, will post results soon!)

Ramza Jun 18, 2012 (edited Jun 18, 2012)

Initial Results:
without any hints I got 19 out of 93. These were the "that's too easy, I recognize that in my sleep" alongside some "this was a game based on an existing cartoon/film franchise" that made it way too easy. They were:

Sonic
FFVI
Altered Beast
LoZ: LttP
Moonwalker
Aladdin
Lion King
Mario Kart
Animaniacs
Chrono Trigger
Ducktales
TMNT
Super Metroid
Rock n Roll Racing (you have no idea how much I played this as a kid)
Tetris
Secret of Mana
Mario 3
Super Smash TV
Toejam & Earl

A whole bunch of the others are on the tip of my tongue, but I couldn't get them. As you can see, the trivia game is heavy on Sega (which puts me at a disadvantage) and light on the RPGs (putting me at an even further disadvantage). But let's see how many more I can get with hint points! (will EDIT instead of making a new post from here...)

EDIT!

Okay, I got these using text hints only
Starfox (I KNEW this one, probably remembered the theme best from playing Smash Bros, so I knew it was 1st-party Nintendo. "Barrel roll" hint got this for me)
NBA Jams (first hint talked about basketball teams, and this is the only basketball videogame I've ever played. ever.)
Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (the "Puyo Puyo" hint was all I needed)
Alex Kidd ("pre-Sonic Sega mascot" gave it to me)
Donkey Kong Country (I swear I typed this in the first time I heard it and it didn't accept it. But when I read the "VHS tapes" hint I knew it and typed again, voila, it worked.)
Shinobi ("Joe Musashi" hint)
Double Dragon ("Bimmy" -- and I should've gotten this one w/o the hint)
Jurassic Park (needed 3 of 4 txt hints to get it)
Cool Spot (and props to anyone who had the NES puzzle game w/ Spot. Loved that thing.)
Streets of Rage
Micro Machines (needed all 4 hints)
Terminator
Gunstar Heroes ("two words not three" hint)
Ristar ("planned post-Sonic mascot")
Columns ("match 3" hint)
Prince of Persia (needed all hints)
Golden Axe
Batman (the first hint said the name)
Breath of Fire (guess I don't know all my RPGs, but Chun Li cameo gave it to me)
Strider
Megaman (writing "Mega Man" doesn't count ... -_-)
F-Zero (Mode 7 hint)
Gradius (was just guessing shooter names and got it)
Road Rash ("motorcycle injury")
Home Alone
Shining Force (first hint mentioned "Fire Emblem" and it sounded like Genesis music, so...)
Bomberman
Ecco
Shaq Fu (doesn't have this trivia, but OUGHT TO, that there's an ongoing nerd movement to destroy every last copy of this game)
Super Mario RPG (how did I not get this one?)
Punch-out
Phantasy Star ("Genesis RPG" and I started guessing)
Turrican (I needed "Hülsbeck" and then I got it)
Terminator (again? He used it earlier. And he refers to the music as "chiptunes" and then talks about SNES and Genesis.) -- ok seriously, the creator of this game has both a very esoteric library of games in his head and doesn't really "get" game music... one too many licensed games in there... alright I'm done preaching...

These ones required hints+pics+google:
Cosmic Spacehead (never heard of it)
Kid Chameleon
Dizzy
Eternal Champions
NHL (I shoulda just typed that)
Comix Zone (hurray, found an emerald!)
Alfred Chicken
Air Buster
Puggsy
James Pond Robocod
Chuck Rock
Tetris Attack
Zool
Zoop
Super Monaco GP
Aero the Acro-Bat
QuackShot
Bart's Nightmare (great game, I knew it when I heard the music, didn't remember the title)
Killer Instinct (I should've known this one!)
Dynamite Headdy (only determined by searching "Sega game music nutcracker" in google)
Kirby's Adventure
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (screenshot gave it to me)
Streets of Rage 2
WWF Raw
Earthbound (wow I should've gotten this)
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Earthworm Jim (wow... I suck)
Sparkster
Lost Vikings
Casper (screenshot...)
Rap Jam: Volume One (wtf I never knew about this)
World of Illusion (in one of the hints he refers to Kingdom Hearts as a "classic PS1 game" ... see me preaching about his ignorance above, I feel elite again)
World Cup Italia (wtf)
Pac Attack
Mutant League Hockey
Psycho Pinball
Sunset Riders

okay now to find them secret questions...

1) enter konami code upupdowndownleftright B A
CONTRA

2) Sonic code (A -- up down left right)
SONIC AND KNUCKLES

3) uh... chuck rock code? (A B right A C A down A B right A)
VECTORMAN
(gray emerald here)

There, 100%'d it. That dude has seriously strange taste. Or, perhaps, all those games were super-popular in the UK.

I played this one way too much, and always loved the cheesy tune he picked to represent it.

Streets of Rage

I am disappoint! This tune should be familiar to everyone.

Megaman (writing "Mega Man" doesn't count ... -_-)

Got this without a hint, but it pissed me off that it forced me to type it as one word too.

I'll definitely agree with "too many licensed games".

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (screenshot gave it to me)

It's the theme tune from the show! And without the words, it kind of rocks smile

Streets of Rage 2

I'm really going to have to insist that you listen to these soundtracks till you can recognize them. So good.

Sparkster

Probably because the screenshot wasn't from Sparkster, it was from Rocket Knight Adventures. Quiz fail!

Casper (screenshot...)

Screenshot of the title screen? Thanks I guess. This one equated to buying the answer with hint money.

World Cup Italia (wtf)

I'll second that WTF.

3) uh... chuck rock code? (A B right A C A down A B right A)

ABRACADABRA! Duh tongue

Oh, NOW I understand the emeralds tongue

Ramza Jun 18, 2012

Smeg,

Streets of Rage is Yuzo Koshiro, right? I think I do need to edumacate myself. I'm a little ashamed.

Jodo Kast Jun 19, 2012

I got 50 total, using hints and looking at screenshots (about 30 without). I found 5 emeralds, but no secret questions. I thought there was something wrong with the game because it wouldn't accept Streets of Rage II. I changed the II to 2 and that did it.

Even with screenshots, some of these baffle me completely.

I'm a stickler for using Roman or Arabic numerals as dictated by the title. For instance, Final Fantasy 7 is "wrong" - Final Fantasies are always Roman, except for that bizarre FFX-2. Streets of Rage has always used Arabic numerals though, so I can't sympathize like I can with that "Megaman" BS (it's two words, dammit!)

Having to type Mega Man as Megaman was definitely a careless mistake on part of the designer. Anyone able to make a quiz like that should know how to spell Mega Man. Even his kids and their kids should know how to spell it; it's part of our DNA!

Ramza Jun 21, 2012

Nobody hates inconsistent use of roman vs arabic numerals more than me. It eats away at my conscience.

SaGa Frontier II vs 2 is especially frustrating since it's one of my all-time favorite games & OSTs.

Though I must say, I've finally warmed up to using arabic numerals up to 4 and then switching to V. I'm told this is done because in Japan "5" is too easily mistaken for either s or the hiragana "ra." This explains Wild Arms' and Sakura Wars' numbering system.
