I saw this one a couple of weeks ago but didn't get around to posting about it until now. It's a decent sci-fi film whose themes revolve around the idea of creators and creations and how the two interact with one another. On that level, it's pretty darn good. Unfortunately, the movie is edited so tightly that character development is all but forgotten. When bad things start happening to the characters, the movie acts like you should care, but you don't because it never gave you any reason to. Performances are similarly mixed. Although I really liked Noomi Rapace in the Millennium Trilogy and even in Sherlock Holmes 2, she's not convincing here and is outshined by Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, and even Charlize Theron (though not by Logan Marshall Green's dreadful acting). Most disappointing is the unnecessary connection to the Alien franchise which only cheapens the movie and should have been left out entirely. Disappointment aside, Prometheus is worth seeing if you like science fiction, if only for the exploration of the creator/creation themes I mentioned earlier. It's just such a shame it didn't live up to its potential.

I felt it looked absolutely beautiful but thought it must have been written by idiots. At a certain point in the movie, the stupidity and lack of any character consistency became to much to overlook. A shame. Still, a gorgeous movie.

Of all the summer movie trailers, the trailer for this (the second one, I think) was the most impressive by far.  Absolutely astounding.

As the movie hasn't come to Japan yet I've still not seen it.  Sad to hear about its issues though I know even just for the visuals alone this is one I need to see on the big screen.

There's talk about a 20 minute longer extended cut for the Blu-ray release.  It'll be interesting to see if that can solve any of the movie's reported problems.

I had always wondered about the large alien in the original Alien movie. The one strapped to the chair with the hole in his chest. In that ship they had found thousands of eggs.

In Prometheus, they land on a different planet and find a ship of similar design to the one in Alien (not the same one). There are many of those ships, supposedly on many different planets. We now know the large alien we saw in Alien was a white-skinned Engineer.

I liked all of this, the nice and neat wrap up of the "other" alien in Alien. I did not like the attempted tie-in to the main alien from Alien; it burst out as an imago (adult form). Insects don't do that (that I know of), whether they are Terran or Alien. They go through metamorphosis, which we saw in the original Alien.

Like Jay, I initially agreed with the assessment it was beautifully directed by a master, and written by 5 year olds...

I read an analysis that offered a lot of a potential suggestion for connecting the dots, and I have to say, after reading it, I enjoyed the movie and it's potential for so much more

That said, this is a movie I feel would definitely need a sequel, but , I have my reservations that one will be made...regrettably, without one, we end up with, what I had hoped the 'Alien Prequel' would not turn out to be...typical Sci-Fi schlock...albeit well produced and directed.  I'm on board for more, but I suspect this is a one time (last time) outing for director Ridley Scott...I could be wrong, (I hope I am actually), but the guy is pushing 70+ at this stage.  Anyway, good for 80% of most the sci fi movies out there, just wished it hadn't leaned on too much unexplained and "lost" type story gaps (same writer involved)...The viewer is left with an over abundance of questions, and while I like that the movie gave a lot of people something to talk about....the story would have benefited from fleshing out some of it's more ambitious suggestions. 

That said, if you haven't seen it, are a fan of any of the Alien franchise movies, definitely recommend checking it out.  It's in my top 3...can you guess the other 2??

Easily one of the nicest films to look at of the summer - the dark, sci-fi counterpart to the naturalistic, fantastical Snow White.  Story-wise this one's a fair bit more involving - the characters hardly so but an interesting premise and some good sci-fi thrills compensate, while a couple slightly sketchy bits of exposition are easy to overlook thanks to the quick pacing and overall solid production.  Has no chance of attaining the classic status of Scott's original Alien movie but is solid entertainment nonetheless.

I'll still be very interested to see that extended edit.  Though as mentioned I think the brisk pacing is an asset in a sense (it's nice to see a movie actually clock in around two hours now and then) on the other hand I can see how some added footage might flesh out the characters and possibly even add to the suspense.

Still I came away from the theatrical release completely satisfied.
