Y'know how, sometimes, given a certain franchise, you wish they'd make a tournament fighter based on it?

Well, two great tastes that go together: Traditional turn-based RPG + Tournament Fighter!

Also, just in case you want it right now: http://otaku.be/products/34151

I think RPG Fan might want to get reviewing on that one soon!

I literally haven't played a single tournament fighter since Super Street Fighter 2 (before that, it was the original and Turbo editions)...aside from flirting briefly with Guilty Gear and Street Fighter IV.

I'm actually one of those boring people who just plays tournament fighters against the computerized opponent...I don't find many other people to play video games with.

Persona 4 Arena might just be enough to get either a 360 or PS3. Because, you know, I don't already have either of those consoles.

Excellent! So which characters are you going to be prepared to main? Especially with a 30 to 40 hour story!!!

I think I'm going to go with Mitsuru or Chie. I'm really looking forward to playing this one at Summer Jam this year. Make sure to preorder to get the bonus Meguro sounds big_smile

You mean the Big E tournament in Philly? I'm headed there.

Some of the DE players are really excited for this game. I'm approaching with caution, but I might pick it up if seems solid enough. Marvel is my only game and I keep slacking on King of Fighters, so hopefully this one will break through my practice sessions.

FuryofFrog Jul 16, 2012

Yeah, I live in the suburbs by Philly so I go to all of Big E's tournys. It looks solid enough but I'm not so sure how much I'm gonna like it just due to how certain mechanics are pulled off. I'm not sure I want even more people in the FGC running their mouths about EasyFighter4: Arena.

It looks like Jojo's + Guilty + Blaz but hopefully they got the proportion right.

So are you gonna play it

AC          BCD
BD        A

Personally I'm probably gonna go for SNK layout. Slacking on KoF sir? Aww man. Marvel is good and everything but you gotta bone up! Get those short hops and HD cancels. Whats your current team?

GoldfishX Jul 17, 2012 (edited Jul 17, 2012)

For Marvel, I run Wolverine/Taskmaster/Dormammu. High damage, low effort, low execution.

Here's a couple vids of my team and me in action. These are from the Big E Barfights up in Philly. I'm the white guy with the Iron Maiden shirts:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AV0c0HbMdfA (I look like I'm about to die in this one because it is really hot down there!)

Me vs Marlinpie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThIpF9XU … CE079F70FA (I mess up at the VERY end with Wolverine, did not know I could just go right into Fatal Claw to kill both characters)

Me vs Meep: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0itxWTh … 1F2DE3C890  (Meep is like my eternal rival in this game right now, I'm 1-10 against him in tournaments...and that one win was before he got good. sad   )

For KOF, my team will likely end up being Andy on point (low meter usage, good normals), Raiden in the middle and either Kyo or Terry at the end. Also thinking about King, Kula or Athena somewhere in the mix. I have short hops down pretty well (I played N-Groove in CvS 2 tongue), but I'm still trying to wrap my head around all the various types of cancels that are in KOF XIII. I'm probably playing it more like SF IV right now, although I'm probably enjoying it way more than SF IV.

I'll probably end up trying both layouts and see why one works best. That's what I did for Marvel.

FuryofFrog Jul 19, 2012

Marvel is something that put a sour taste in my mouth over time just due to how the randomness just kind or rules.

Its fun to watch but I can't play it worth a damn. When I play I run Firebrand/She-Hulk/Morrigan.

I'm super into SNK stuff so KoF XIII is something I bathe in. If your having problems with links and cancels and stuff and your playing more like SF4 I would advise giving Ralf a try. Hes got a lot of loose links SF style and can deal some monster damage.

Do you also go to the Jaxel Dome in Edison too? I've been thinking about hitting up that and Bar Battles but I just really haven't been able to generate a crowd to go. Diggin' those matches man. Maybe next Bar Battles I'll see you there.

GoldfishX Jul 19, 2012 (edited Jul 19, 2012)

Yeah, I agree to a point with Marvel being random, but then I see the same people placing/winning and there has to be something to it. I think the main thing is it teaches you to make good on-the-fly decisions...most turnarounds can be traced to a single whiff or dropped combo or something. For me, learning how NOT to hit buttons has upped my winning percentage a lot (especially with Wolverine). Usually SF or KOF losses are a result of a series of bad decisions, not just one.

I do see Ralf a lot (I've mistaken him for Raiden, because of his new sprite size). I'm still experimenting with characters, but I'll move him up in the queue.

I don't know about the Jaxeldome, but Bar Fights is always a hoot. So many bodies, so little space. E said possibly looking into getting something else going with the arcade again too.

BTW, if you know a dude named Nas, I usually travel to tourneys with him. He's been a mainstay of the fighting game scene (especially in Philly) for years. I'm semi-recent, ever since Marvel 3 came out. I always wear a Maiden shirt to tourneys, so I'm not too hard to find.

Edit: I play Firebrand on a lot of my fun teams. He can be so annoying to people, but his low health (AND low damage output) hurts him pretty bad.

Edit Edit: If you feel like taking a ride, my group plays on Friday nights down in Newark, Delaware (from Philly, should be like 45-50 minutes away). It's not a hotbed for KOF (we have more players who SAY they play KOF than ones who actually play KOF, lol) and it's mostly Marvel, but I expect most of us to go at Persona 4 for awhile when it hits.

Here's our SRK thread. If you're ever interested, just post something in there and one of us will give you directions and stuff. We go at it pretty hard on Fridays, usually till like 3-4 in the morning. http://shoryuken.com/forum/index.php?th … 45/page-74

FuryofFrog Jul 29, 2012

Point taken with Mahvel. Your definitely right though. The punishes are a lot more brutal in MvC and it does teach you to be more cautious and capitalize more. I respect the game but damn is it hard for me to get into.

Haha yeah Ralf did get hella big. After watching the whole cast of SF get beefed up I'm a little surprised that SNK went the same route as well. My friends and I joke that Ralf and Clark eat a bowl of gun powder and bullets for breakfast. No bullshitting around though, Ralf is neat as hell and very friendly.

Dude, Big E is the man. HuBBs too. If they can get even more going in Philly I'm down. As it is I'm looking forward to playing Virtua and KoF at Summer Jam (Maybe some Persona and MK too)

I'm pretty sure I've heard of Nas before but I'm not sure where. I think I may have met him at Winter Brawl. Hm.

I'm also a recent dude as well (at least as far as competitive play goes). For the longest time I would just play people in my suburb area casually and that was enough but the awesomeness that is SF4 swept me and made me aware of the entire scene. I'll keep an eye out for Maiden.

Thanks a lot for the invite dude. If I can get a crew of guys, (or a car) I'll try to make it down to play some rounds.

If your interested I run a group called "The Guild of Fighting Games" on facebook. 2 or 3 Saturdays a month I run Saturday Night Fight, where we play pretty much everything and anything. KoF is the house favorite but everything else is played too. Hit me up on PM if your interested.

Sir, I think given the circumstances you can forgive Atlus this one time. For clarification for why they did this check out the press release from our hero, Aram Jabbari

"Friends of ATLUS,

The last week brought with it news that Persona°4 Arena™ would effectively become the first PlayStation°3 system game to be region-locked. We can today confirm that this is true; the game will be region-locked in all its respective territories of release.

As we've ascertained from your impassioned responses online, this is obviously a tremendous frustration for many fans. We understand the various perspectives on the matter. Those who fear this is a slippery slope, the beginning of a dangerous and unnecessary precedent. Those who import foreign hardware for a multitude of reasons and expect to be unlimited in their software selection. Those who aren't necessarily affected by this issue, but who are principally opposed to it. We are not blind to these concerns and we pledge to grow ever more informed as to exactly what our fans want. It should be added that we were completely unprepared for the force with which the community communicated their disapproval.

There are, however, a few points to clarify. This is NOT the beginning of a new ATLUS policy, nor do we view it as a precedent or a slippery slope. If anything, your determination and dedication to what you believe in has certainly stood in the face of that. This is an isolated case, a situation precipitated by a number of factors, some of which are simply out of our North American hands. Moreover, and perhaps there is no way to convince our fans of this considering the magnitude of the betrayal many are feeling, but we are not doing this out of malice or a desire to control. Allow us to explain.

Persona 4 Arena achieves a number of triumphs for our North American publishing house. For years, our fans have asked us to include dual language audio in our games. Finally, with P4 Arena, we were able to deliver on that desire and include the exact same content as the Japanese release for our North American fans. Moreover, our North American community is often forced to wait months for a localized release (a plight our friends across the Atlantic can relate to). Again, with P4 Arena, we're able to release within two weeks of Japan. We pushed hard for these things. We know our fans want them--well really, EXPECT them--and we did our best to get as much for our release as possible.

The unforeseen consequence in all of this was that we had a version of our biggest game of the year releasing within a couple weeks in two territories, both identical in content, but at radically different price points. Importing, as great as it is for gamers who otherwise can't get access to a title, can also cannibalize the performance of a title in one territory to the benefit of another. While we're all one big ATLUS family, the reality is that the dramatic difference between the Yen and the Dollar makes for a dramatic difference in price. So the decision was made, perhaps at the expense of some of our fans, clearly at the frustration of many, to region-lock Persona 4 Arena.

For many of you, there is no explanation that resonates, no justification that atones for this fact. We can only endeavor to earn back your confidence and, to learn from your arguments. We absolutely recognize the fear that this is the beginning of a trend. We in no way view it as such. Please also keep in mind that the game's excellent online multiplayer is global, a fact that is in no way affected by the region-lock. Players can compete against fighters from all territories.

A tremendous team of talented developers and artists poured their blood, sweat, and tears into Persona 4 Arena, and every reaction we've ever received to the game has shown that those efforts are readily apparent. The decision to region-lock P4 Arena was a business one, one that has very clearly affected how many perceive the project, but we ask you to please not overlook the exceptional efforts of the people behind the game and to work with us through constructive dialogue.

Thank you."

Will you still be boycotting this excellent game?

Pellasos Aug 7, 2012

ah, i know that one, and i've already discussed why i'm not supporting such behavior on another board. short version: don't treat your long time fans like garbage and get your filthy paws off my region free console.

Qui-Gon Joe Aug 7, 2012

Not the beginning of a slippery slope?  It's not like they're going to remove the Japanese voice track from the U.S. Blu Ray release so that they can keep gouging the Japanese on those as well or anything, are th... OH WAIT THEY ARE.

But the release time in between the regions is so short. Its not like its a super long wait like for Demons Souls or Max Anarchy. Its a game thats being released about 2 weeks after the JP version, and EU has to wait till September 7th. The fact that you don't really have to wait very long makes it negligible anywho so you can just get the copy that exists in your region.

And Atlus treating their long time fans like garbage? Please. They have missteps every so ofter but its a far cry from the nefarious business practices of other companies out there. If anything they go out of their way to put it impressive translations, decent voice work, and plenty of Atlus Spoils goodies to go around. Not to mention they continually take risks by localizing stuff like Gungir, Growlanser, KoF etc. I don't believe this is something worth nailing them to the cross for.

I'm not sure if I'm reading your comment right. Do you mean that Atlus is removing the JP voices off the US disc? If so, they do say that the voices will be intact, both in English and Japanese. Do you mean that the US price point is better and that Atlus of Japan is gouging the Japanese with an inflated price?

I do see on play asia that JP Arena is $84.90 while US Arena is $59.90

What are you getting at?

Pellasos Aug 7, 2012

it means Atlus will cut the japanese voice acting from the US Anime release. they are totally nuts.

FuryofFrog Aug 7, 2012

Really? For the anime thats extremely bizarre, for the game though its completely intact.

It makes perfect sense in the context of this conversation, though.  From all I've read, the PS3 is inherently neither region free nor locked - Sony leaves it to publishers to choose if they'd like to lock individual games.  NO ONE has ever done it up until this case.  Blu-Rays, on the other hand, are region coded BUT Japan and the U.S. share the same region.  In Japan, media of all sorts costs much more than it does in any region I'm aware of (I believe the Ghibli library Blu Ray releases' MRSP is 8000 yen or so?).  That being the case, the Japanese parent company has forced the removal of the Japanese voice track pretty much to prevent the Japanese from importing the MUCH CHEAPER American version of the series.  Both of these moves are squarely aimed at keeping Japanese customers paying more exorbitant prices than the rest of the world.

FuryofFrog Aug 7, 2012

I see now. Yeah it does make sense. My reading comprehension was failing me pretty well there. So its more something thats a dick move to the Japanese rather than the on the US side. Its sad to see it but I do think thats something more or less mandated in the contract from Atlus JP to Atlus US, meaning US would still deserve all the good will it receives.

FuryofFrog Aug 8, 2012

Is anybody besides me actually playing this game? Any thoughts on it?
