if yur at all familiar w/ emulators & ROMs, youve prolly come across ROM hacks - ROMs of games that have been hacked, and used to re-create the game, usually into something incredibly challenging/impossible/masochistic to play.

you can YouTube videos of some of the most popular games - usually retro games (Castlevania, Mario, Mega Man), and most assuredly find videos, and watch someone playing these hacked ROMs - which is pretty entertaining in its own right, especially when you see the player get through a near-miss and triumph over an impossible obstacle on a random whim. otherwise, it's just interesting to see how someone "remixed" a particular game.

so, if yur familiar w/ ROM hacks, seen them, or even played them yourself, what are some of your favorite particular ROM hacks, and where did you find them?

not a hack per se. But that retranslation for Breath of Fire 2 was good shit. The original was unintelligible.

I think the topic in question should be which game (series) have the best hacks out there. I know for one that Super Metroid has a ton (as Metroid II or the GBA ones might), but I have no idea which ones are good...and I'm not gonna tread through them all. Same for the 2D Marios (obviously!), and probably a few variations on Pokemon Red/Blue would be nice.

Anyone know the site that hosts the most hacks (with commentary as well)?

I remember playing a hack of NSMB on the DS a couple of years back, where the hacker had rebuilt all the stages to match those from SMB3, which was pretty cool.

Only problem is, and this is my main gripe with most ROM hacks, once he starts designing his own stages, everything just becomes ridiculously difficult and frustrating.

It doesn't help that NSMB has such slippery physics.

There's a few hacks that do SMB3 (and even more with SMB1) using SMW though, and those play a lot better.

Unless I'm highly mistaken, all of those stages look original. But they do seem to look a bit better than the average NSMB level; not that that game has a high standard or anything.

Very nice. Now is it me or do hackers seem to have too much free time on their hands...?

A lot of them are original, yes, and even the ones that aren't have a lot of new areas in them, but several of them are remakes of the stages in SMB3.
Just watch this walkthrough of 1-1 for instance:

Very well. Thanks for clearing that up. I'll have to try it once I get my DS back.
