I remember when Apple used to proudly claim how anti-Microsoft they were. Well, looks like now that they're in the lead, they are acting just as horrible as Microsoft ever did.

As one reviewer noted:

Typical Apple Tech Support:

User "My iPhone 5 is taking purple pictures!"
Apple: "You're holding it wrong!"

User:"I'm holding it right but the sun is purple"
Apple: "Then the Sun is wrong!"

User:"My iPhone 5 is being scuffed easily"
Apple:"You're scuffing it wrong!"

User"My iPHone 5 can't connect to my WIFI network"
Apple:"Your network is wrong!"

User: "My iPhone 5's screen looks yellow"
Apple:"Your eyes are wrong, have them checked!"

User: "My iPhone 5 gave me inaccurate directions!"
Apple:"Your city is wrong"

Only once in my life have I ever purchased an Apple product and I found it to be more annoying than useful. People, in general, must be very satisfied with crap. From my point of view, Apple is a company that makes products on par with those little toys in McDonald's Happy Meals.

I think Jobs forged Apple to what it is now. That's not a compliment I have to say. I steer away from Apple products for various reasons.

never bought an apple product. people around me have them.

Idolores Oct 10, 2012

At this point, I'd be remiss to not mention that my 2007 Macbook Pro was the best computer I have ever owned or used. The thing was on for over 5 years and under heavy strain for  about half that. I abused the shit out of it. She died a month or two ago, and I'll probably end up buying another down the road if mine can't be repaired.

With that said, I'll never ever spring for an ipad or ipod.

Crash Oct 10, 2012

We have an iPad (first generation).  As a rhythm game fan, I bought it to play Jubeat (and later Reflec Beat), but it has since been commandeered by our 2-year-old daughter.  She loves playing games and watching videos on it.  She will load up the PBS Kids app, and spend hours watching the videos if we let her.  If anyone else tries to use it, she throws a fit.

Honestly, I never understood why Apple was held in such high regard.  The iPod was not the first (or the best) DAP, but Apple acted like it was.  I found the blasted scroll wheel to be incredibly irritating.  The iPad was not the first tablet, but Apple acted like it was, going so far as to sue Samsung for copying its form factor.  The iPhone was not the first smartphone, but Apple acted like it was.  Every time I have ever talked to someone who was using an iPhone, the reception has been a little spotty, and I had to listen to accidental button presses, sometimes once a minute, as their face brushed up against the phone while they were talking.

What they have going for them is (a) their stuff looks cool; (b) their content library is without peer; and (c) they have a rabid fanbase.  (b) was the reason I got an iPad in the first place, as I wanted to play a game that was only offered on iOS.

What I find startling is that the stereotype of the Apple fanboy is the young hipster who decries commercialism.  Spending $500+ on an electronic gadget produced by a company with incredibly fat profit margins which has overseas factories with fairly questionable production working conditions seems like exactly the sort of thing these people would rail against.

When writers and philosophers exposit about the evils of capitalism, corporations, consumerism and modern society, most of it was actually inspired by and directed at companies like Apple Computer. True fact.

Well said. From my experience, it's easy for some people to cry "foul" as long as it doesn't interfere with their lifestyle. Take their iBlah away, and then they go ballistic. I'm also convinced this stereotypical image of the Apple fanboy is just something used by Apple to increase their wallets. This image may have been somewhat correct back when Apple was making computers (here in the US by the way), but is in no way true today. I admit Apple knows how to market, and they have a huge number of iSheep, therefore they have insane profits. Happy to report that none of those profits are from my wallet.

Cedille Oct 10, 2012

My image of the classic Apple fanboys are those enjoying being the minority yet always flaunting using something different.

Now it shouldn't apply anymore, since they're becoming a dominating force in the mobile territory. -

It's funny...My first mp3 player was an iPod and my current phone is an iPhone. I use Cowon mp3 players now (better SQ, no iTunes to bother with) but I love my iPhone and I'm in no hurry to upgrade. On the same hand, I think the Galaxy S3 commercials that poke fun people excited for the iPhone 5 launch are some of the funniest ads in the last 10 years or so.

I don't get the Apple hate, nor do I get the Apple fanboyism. They're just products to me, that do the same stuff as most everything else on the market. My iPod was the best player on the market when I bought it (and the 1st generation Shuffle is the best sounding mp3 player ever, just wish it had more storage), then I moved onto something better. Same with Macs...I'm happy with PC's (generally speaking) and whenever I've tried using a Mac, it felt like the same thing, different interface.

I guess it's like when a game is multi-platform, whatever I own is (usually) good enough to play it. In this case, music and smartphone data are the multi-platform games and the stuff I have plays them just fine.

While our taste in games may differ drastically, we agree 100% here.  I was planning to post something almost identical in this thread.  Two thumbs up!

Sure, and Apple costs what... 2-3 times the competition's price. By the way, it's not "hate", I would say it's more like general dismay at how people are willing to throw their money away because "it's an Apple". As you already said, there are similar products that do the same thing Apple does, and arguably better, but unarguably far less expensive.

It's good to know that listening to music in public is every bit as important as the civil rights movement
and public transportation. Steve Jobs is a genius!

When the iPhone launched, it was like $500-$600, which was stupid. But other than Blackberry, I don't recall many other smartphones on the market. I waited and I got mine for $99 when I signed up for a plan. No issues. No idea what the iPhone 5 goes for with a plan, but the Galaxy 3 was $200 with a contract. Way too much for a phone.

5th Gen iPod cost me $300, when there really wasn't much competition. No issues. Shuffle was $50, but was worth it because it could take plenty of abuse and I later on noticed the sound quality thing. Pretty standard for flash players. Cowon players cost about the same as Apple players (X7 and iPod Classic are two of the only hard drive-based media players around and both are around the $250 range). Both brands have their share of headaches and advantages (I need to test this, but some people use the line-out dock on iPods to run to a portable amp and they say the sound is much improved. Cowon players have more tweakable sound.)

iPads are priced insanely. A lot of my friends bought Kindle Fires because of that. Me personally, iPads are too large to be really useful and my iPhone is basically just a mini-tablet anyway with the same functionality, so I fail to understand why tablets overall are a big deal (other than for reading e-books or people that have trouble with small text)

What I do hate about Apple is what they charge for accessories. The little charging "block" thingy they give away with iPhones is $30 if bought separately!

By the way, I felt the same way about Sony when they launched PS3 for $600. Without their strong brand behind them, they probably would have crashed and burned clean out of this console generation.

Well, I don't see anything wrong with it. Apple fans find there it more to iStuff than others do, and that's just it. See how many Swiss watches have retarted price tags, while there might be better yet cheaper ones. After all, that's what brands can do.

The only case I'd mind it is when those blind collectors aka fanboys start thinking they are superior because they purchase better products.

I'm on a college campus, and I can't count how many people have Apple laptops, ipods, ipads, and Ugg boots. Why? I'm guessing for many because "everyone is doing it".

That was amusing:)

To me Apple just comes off as a clear case of 'Panem et circenses' (Bread and circuses). But you know what really bothers me more is how they can get away with those ridiculous licence agreements. I mean, did anybody here ever bother to actually read it? I received an iPhone touch as a present recently and was totally put off by the license agreement...to the extent that my iPod touch is lying idle.

I'm not much of an Apple fan, and the only Apple product I own is my iPhone, but I've been very happy with it. Unlike Apple's tablets and computers, its phones are competitively priced, and iOS is a lot easier to use than Android in my experience. Sure, it's not as flexible or customizable, but I don't really want that in a phone. I just want it to be simple and to work. That said, I totally agree with the criticism about the flaws in the iPhone 5, Apple's arrogant handling of said flaws, and the iOS6 maps debacle.

I forget to say that I own Macbook Air, iPhones, iPods, iPod Touch and plan to get an iPad. I don't consider myself as a big Apple fanboy, but perhaps I'm not so much impartial and unbiased, either. At each of my purchase time, I've been generally having a hard time to find a better alternative than what Apple offers (excepting, say, iPad mini) or in the worst case only Apple allows me, so why not just go with so called iCraps, especially since I have no religious reason to intentionally avoid them (while I may have ones for Sony).

For a few hundred dollars I can get a laptop, install Linux on it, which is the best OS. Mac OS is based on Linux, by the way. So basically, by doing that I get a superior product and save hundreds of dollars at least. As for iphone, I think numerous people will tell you how superior Android is. As for ipod, I much prefer my Sony Walkman which is about 1/2 the price if not less (and yes, I have owned a couple of ipods). As for tablets, I have not used any, so I can't comment on those. However, I have now given you a number of reasons why not to go with icrap.

People don't buy apple, or dell, or anything like that because they're getting a superior product. They're paying for the convenience of having something that works without having to build or configure.

Linux is garbage for a home OS for anyone but the most enthusiastic Unix user. It's interface looks like garbage and its support for regular user stuff is awful. It takes hours to configure things in wine if you're not familiar with it.

Android is garbage bloatware at this point. I can absolutely concede that it is faster and supports things like flash where apple doesn't, but apple has ui, interface and tactile response down to a science. Android is flat out just trying to compete.

I don't have experience with a Sony Walkman but iPods are ageless wonders. My classic has been kicking for almost 10 years now. Does it support lossless? No. Do I care or does it really need to? No. It plays music. The end.

I have an iPhone and that's the only apple product i own. I'm not interested in the rehashed garbage that androids and google put out and all the extra flares I don't care about. Apple knows what people want and they design beautifully.

So you're basically saying that most users want it dumbed down. I would agree with that.
I certainly disagree that Linux is garbage! I love the Linux interface, and it does exactly what I want it to! As far as being a stable product, it's way better than MAC or Windows. I will agree that at first, Linux is harder to use than another OS, because it's NOT dumbed down. However, once you get used to it the interface is FAR superior to MAC or Windows in my opinion, and I've used all 3 for years. Also, you can do far more on it, and these days there's really little you can't do on Linux that you can do on a MAC. You can edit Word files, Excel files, all that junk using an open source code (free). Although when it comes to games, for that I do believe you will need Windows or a MAC (although there are emulators for Linux as well). Oh, and I did mention nearly everything is free, right? Can't say the same for Windows, and if you so much as want anything Apple related it's at least 50% more expensive than it should be.

Actually MacOSX is based on UNIX but anyway I basically prefer Windows 7 over any OS I've ever used (MacOSX, Ubuntu, CentOS, Fedra and so forth). Why I got that is because I wanted to develop an iOS app and the only OS that allowed me to do so was MacOSX (unless you dare to use likes of PhoneGap or Selenium). I don't much care about MacOSX, but Macbook Pro/Air overall looked the best laptop to me. My mother had an Ultrabook, but it was in every attribute worse. You could even install Windows on Macbook ;p  As for Android, again, I don't much care about OS. iPhone overall looked the best and the easiest way to move when I had my phone toasted in a microwave and I had to prepare another one within that day.

Anyyyyyyyyyway, I'd not be a clever customer, but I'm happy with all of iCraps I own.

At the end of the day, that's what matters. Still, I personally think they're over-hyped and overpriced. Nothing personal!

GoldfishX Nov 3, 2012

Sony Walkman's are actually rated highly in terms of sound quality. My issues with them are they don't support FLAC and you can't expand their memory, same issues as Apple's stuff (two huge reasons I went with Cowon's stuff). The high-end one (32GB) is about $300 right now, iPod Classic (160GB) is around $250.
