This is a thread to discuss clothes you wear, clothes you like, and clothes that you are interested in -- I guess you can even discuss clothes deals.

Shirts: I definitely am the youngest member here so I still have a lot of t-shirts. I have two shirts that could be considered crude/obscene (one is from The Onion and the other is a vinyl support shirt that makes a 12" innuendo).

Jeans: For jeans I stick with Levi's (505 and 514).

Jackets: I like this G by Guess light black jacket I have the best.

Shoes: Nothing fancy.

I recently got a job in the recycling industry and my warehouse gets more than 15,000 pounds of clothes per day. Based on what I learned during the training and what I've read in Scientific American, I'm surprised that it is even legal to make clothes. The process wastes incredible amounts of water and energy. Thus, going naked is a green behavior and should be encouraged. The new motto is: Shed your clothes to the toes!

I might as well be naked for all the fashion sense I have. I look like a damn hobo most of the time. Suits me just fine. Makes people less likely to talk to me in the street.

Are you under the impression that people in their 30s don't wear T-shirts?

As for myself, not only do I not have any fashion sense (any gamer worth his salt does NOT have fashion sense wink ) but I also don't care about it in the slightest.

Dude, you still wear T-shirts? What, are you 20?

While I appreciate you validating my total lack of fashion sense, I think I am ready to take the plunge. I have been flirting with the idea of playing a little less video games and gradually re-integrating into society. It seems in society people tend to judge you almost entirely on appearances, so I thought it might serve me to upgrade my closet. Unfortunately, having been out of the game for so long I tend to go too conservative on my choices, like too drab color things: gray and black, or wildly miss the mark with loud clothes. It just occurred to me- if you have no fashion sense, you can always pick up magazines for ideas. In the Kinokuniya bookstore they have those Japanese fashion magazines where they have just tons of pictures of different outfits. I gotta pick one of those up.

I'll be dead and buried 5 times before I buy a fashion magazine.

Also, I'm 33, very much part of society and I wear a lot of game-related T-shirts which always go down really well with the people around me.

I don't give a f*ck about fashion, I just wear what I want.
If people around you don't like it, then you should hang out with other people.

Just be yourself. You don't need to look at magazines for people to emulate, and you don't need other people to validate you or your wardrobe. Just do what feels right to you, not what you think will feel right for "society" or for other people. People come and go, and fashion trends change, but you will always have yourself.

What's fashion? Can I eat it?

Jeans and t-shirts, and hoodies please. Perhaps something more formal to weddings and shit.

Smeg Nov 26, 2012

Amazingu pretty much echoes my experience and my sentiment. I'll just add that I don't own any jeans, which are apparently so important that they receive their own category in the original post. Khakis are so much more comfortable.

Crash Nov 27, 2012

I am a bit of a clothes horse myself.  In fact, in our shared bedroom closet, I probably account for 3/4 of the clothes in there.  I used to have rather bold choices in my wardrobe, but I have toned it down a bit, preferring classic styles with maybe a touch of flair.

The hardest thing I have found is finding a designer who has consistent sizing.  I love Burberry clothes, but I find that I need to try on eight shirts to find one that fits right.  I have a fairly small frame, and usually wear small dress shirts and sweaters.  With T-shirts, it's either small or medium, depending on the brand.  Some brands I can't wear at all; Armani Exchange's smalls are too small, but their mediums are too large for me.

I am also pretty particular about materials.  I prefer cotton for dress shirts, T-shirts, and pants, and lambswool or cashmere for sweaters.  Some elastane is OK on shirts and pants.  I stay away from other synthetic fabrics.

I also never buy clothes unless they are on sale.  I will buy expensive clothes, but at at least moderate savings.  Nordstrom Rack/Neiman Marcus Last Call/Saks Off Fifth is where I prefer to do my shopping, and in Minneapolis, I spent a ton of money at the Len Druskin clearance store.

Dress shirts: I gravitate to Theory for dress shirts.  I also have a fair number of Boss shirts, along with an assortment of other brands.  My favorite shirt is an Armani, but it is hard to find them on sale.  I tend to wear dress shirts in the summer, and sweaters in the winter.

Pants: Almost all of my pants are Adriano Goldschmied.  They are the only pants that I have found that look great and fit well.  I have a really hard time finding pants I like.

Jeans: AG as well, with a sprinkling of other brands (Chip and Pepper, Paper Denim and Cloth, Earnest Sewn).

Sweaters: Vince and Theory make really good sweaters.  The Men's Store at Bloomingdales makes a pretty nice cashmere sweater, as does Neiman Marcus.  I like the Ralph Lauren lambswool sweaters, but I have a hard time finding them in a crewneck.  V-necks don't look good on me, and I've steered away from henleys and half-zips.  I don't like cotton sweaters in general (they seem to age poorly), but I do have a couple in my wardrobe.

Polos: Most of my polos are Burberry, Theory, or Lacoste.  I used to like knit polos, but have shifted to pique polos in the past few years.

T-shirts: My favorite brand is Victorinox, but it is almost impossible to find their shirts in a small.  I also like Vince, James Perse, ADAM, and Alternative Apparel (the last two brands work better in a medium for me).  Banana Republic used to have good quality T-shirts, but I haven't checked them out in a while, and it seems like they keep moving their clothing operations to more and more remote locations which tracks with a decrease in quality.

Speaking of country of manufacture, I have found that clothes made in the US, Hong Kong, Peru, Singapore, the Philippines, and most of Europe to be of better quality.  China is hit-or-miss; a lot of designers are now making their goods in China which usually ends up being OK, but sometimes it's not.  India can be OK for cotton clothes, but I'm not sure I would trust other fabrics.  Clothes made in Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Egypt, etc. seem to be of poorer quality in general.

That made me laugh.

Yotsuya Nov 29, 2012

Just got back from the clothes store. Bought a shiny silver "michelin-man" style down jacket, light blue checkered button-up shirt, and pair of light grey chino pants. Maybe a little 'young' and 'flashy' but I liked them and need some nice clothes without tears or stains lol

PS thanks for the big love Amazingu and Zane, telling me to don't worry what people think of my appearance. I didn't use a fashion magazine :B
