Thanks to Discotek Media the english dub gets an official release in July!  I for one loved this show, funny ass stuff!  Esp. the opening theme song.  It's great!

Here is a youtube link to the english intro, it's old but oh well.  It's a taste of what this show is like! big_smile

I never got to see this show, but damn it looks better than 99% of the craptastic looking animation I see today (US and Japan).

Amazingu Apr 7, 2013

I need this.

I need this TO LIVE.

Really? 99%? I'm not sure you've been playing close attention.

Anyways, it's nice that the set finally has a vague date. I've been waiting at least a decade for someone to finally release this, and then for what feels like at least another year since Discotek first announced they secured the rights. The show isn't actually *that* good, but nostalgia dictates that I need to buy this.

You're right, I haven't. But I've seen enough memes, flicked past Cartoon Network enough, have been to enough anime conventions (where you're surround by dozens of different shows at one time pretty much) and have seen enough sloppy, digital animation (I'm not even taking garbage like the new Garfield or TMNT into account) that I've long given up on looking for good modern animation. Adventure Time and Phineas and Ferb get slight passes, as I like them despite how they look, although I doubt I could sit through an extended period of either. And I can't even name a recent, decent anime.

It doesn't help that I much prefer hand-drawn animation. There's something that's just satisfying and warm to look at with a show like this.

I`ll second Goldfish here.

I`ve said before on these forums that artistic design is just as important as the quality of the visuals (if not more so).

Pizza Cats is wonderfully distinct on an aesthetic level, despite how it`s actual animation quality has aged quite a bit.

I am not familiar with this show, but is it safe to say it's Japan's answer to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?

Robot ninja cats that get launched to wherever the villain is via a giant magnum.

Be that as it may, I've fairly certain this was a response to TMNT, hence the outrageous name and motif.

Sorta, though it came way later, and this was only the English name for the show.

I'm not sure memes, split-second peeks of Cartoon Network, and anime cons can provide an informed opinion.  I'll concede that at least 90% of *everything* tends to be crap, but there's still some really great stuff coming out of both America *and* Japan these days. You're going to be missing out on a lot of good stuff with that dismissive attitude. For instance, the new TMNT is great, both visually and in its writing. The old show we grew up on has a certain charm and nostalgia factor, but objectively, the new one is far superior. Well, except for the lack of Shredder-Krang banter and no Irma, I suppose.

And for the record, even the anime of today is drawn by hand. You might be confusing "hand-drawn" with "hand-painted". The early days of digi-paint were largely an ugly, lazy mess, to be sure, but there's some gorgeous stuff being made today, even if the writing might still be total garbage. And if you're looking for recent, good anime, check out Mawaru Penguindrum, The Tatami Galaxy, Eden of the East, Princess Jellyfish, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Bunny Drop, Kids on the Slope, Madoka Magica, Chihayafuru, Space Brothers, or Anohana. Just because you can't name anything doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Considering the fact that the opening song contains the lyrics "They've got more fur than any turtle ever had," I'd say that's a fair statement. Or at the very least, the English dub contained obvious parodying elements.
Not sure if the original JP version had much to do with TMNT though.

We'll have to agree to disagree on the merits of the new TMNT, as I'm not a fan of 3D animation and I think it is cheesy and hard to watch without cringing. I have no interest in "objective" critique...I'm sure the animators are incredibly talented and well versed in what they do, but to me it is just taking a popular franchise and applying a modern technique that, personally, I feel will not stand the test of time. The 1987 TMNT is far from perfect, but so much easier on the eyes and I like the voice acting much more. They really messed that show up in the last couple seasons, along with switching Mike from nunchuks to a grappling hook, for whatever BS censorship reasons.

And I will have to take your word for it on the anime. I honestly lost interest in anime awhile ago, but it was a combination of shows that were simply painful to look at mixed with ones with generic characters, predictable plotlines and just took too damn long to get going. And this was over a long period of time. The last one I enjoyed was the original Code Geass and that was despite the look of the Clamp character designs. I think one Otakon, everyone was cosplaying that one, lol. Even the new You're Under Arrest kind of has that dull look to it, compared to the old series.

And yes, hand-painted is what I meant (I see that mix-up a lot). Most of my favorites are from the late 80's/early 90's - think Toonami and some Adult Swim, with some Ranma, You're Under Arrest, El-Hazard and various OVA's mixed in. Samurai Pizza Cats seems to fit right in with that mold.

There is no relation to TMNT and Pizza Cats other than the English dub makes fun of them, thats all. big_smile

The English dub is pretty much all improv script.  And the animation is something that has been lost in time.  But I do prefer it over most current shows.  One of my favorite animes.
