Show Your True Colors

Splatter enemies and claim your turf as the ink-spewing, squid-like characters called Inklings in Nintendo's new third-person action shooter game for the Wii U console. Challenge your friends in chaotic four-on-four matches, in which the goal is to get your ink on as many places as possible and claim your turf, all while strategically submerging yourself in your team's colors and blasting your enemies. This is a colorful and chaotic online third-person action shooter – exclusively on Wii U.*

FEATURES:

Team up and take on other teams in an action-filled battle to cover the level with as much ink as possible. Spray walls to access hard-to-reach areas.
Covering more territory with ink unlocks powered-up super weapons that can be used to attack rivals or cover more turf.
Strategy is everything. Defeat enemies to splatter them in an explosion of ink, covering more turf for your team. But choose wisely: Players who only go after the enemy might find their turf redecorated in their enemies' colors.
Refill ink tanks, hide from opponents or move faster by turning into a squid and diving into the ink with the tap of a button.
Select between multiple control options on the Wii U GamePad controller, including using gyroscopic controls to look around, allowing for better aiming and control.
Hop online and battle in four-on-four matches.
*Broadband Internet access required for online play. For more info, go to support.nintendo.com.
Additional accessories required for multiplayer mode; sold separately.

Curious about this one - how would local multi player work?  Multiple Wii U GamePad controllers?  (do any games support this yet?) I think the controllers by themselves are like $150 each

This looks really awesome.

First game in like half a decade that has me an itch wanting to play it. And I normally don't care for (the abundace of) shooters.

@brandonk: No support for more than one Wii U Pad so far, thus no separate pads for sale. They all would need to share the image bandwidth anyway (half the framerate with two pads etc.).

I don't think they've announced a local multi option for this one yet, but I imagine you could have one person playing on the Gamepad and another four on the TV in splitscreen.

L-stick - move

R-button - Bomb (uses 70% of your ink)

Touch the Squid Icon to make a big jump to one of your team mates.

So, this comes out shortly.  Anyone picking it up?  Currently grabbing the demo off the WiiU Store and gonna see how it fares tomorrow when the test server launches or something like that.  The 20 minute demo video looked really cool.

I played in the first two Global Testfire demos. The gameplay is absolutely addicting, love the paint-roller type weapon the most. Can't get over the satisfying feeling of hiding inside the paint, coming out and rolling over some clueless chump, there's a nice little sound-effect accompanied by that Pikmin-esque death animation which I really adored too. The game mostly controls very well, save for its semi-reliance on using the gamepad as a gyro-scopic tool to aim, which works.. OK, doesn't detract too much from the experience luckily. The right stick is used to control camera too. After trying the demo, this is absolutely a day-one purchase for me. I haven't had this much fun in a multiplayer title in a long while.

I want to try it, but Nintendo's one-hour test windows aren't convenient, so I guess I'll wait. I do know that motion controls can be turned off in the options menu for anyone who doesn't want them, though. I'm also very amused by the amount of Hideki Naganuma fans on Twitter who are loudly screaming for Nintendo to hire him to make music for future DLC for this game. I have to admit, his style would be a pretty great fit.

I'm not usually one for multiplayer games but I loved the demo. I think a lot of it is because a productive goal is more emphasized than a destructive one. If this were on PC and relatively cheap I'd be all over it...obviously there's a 0% chance of that.

You can turn the gyro off. Though I think doing so will actually be a competitive disadvantage.

In other news, Nintendo is doing one more 1h server stress test on 24th.

This is kind-of late but this game's multi-player is a masterpiece.

Anyone here have it? gamertag: vert01

An honest assessment of Splatoon's negatives:

Single player is the only huge disappointment. The story mode was not the action-packed game I wanted it to be. The enemies were pushovers (they didn't make any aesthetic mayhem -- why couldn't they swarm me in hordes?) and it boiled down to getting from point A to point B in that quirky way only Splatoon can provide. The hub had that same feel; Something more could have been done with it than traversal. The music got annoying at times when it introduced the more wackier tracks. The boss battles were inventive but a bit too easy. The final boss was indeed awesome. Like PN03 final boss awesome.

Mutlti-player:
No voice chat does not matter that much because everyone has no voice chat. (Of course now people are "cheating" by using third party software to voice chat each other.)

The initial modes and weapon selection were limited but it evolved so quickly I never felt limited. Of course in the future I would suggest they not limit modes.

The lack of a sound option is the only thing that bothers me.
