Face facts, the  human race is dumb. It's a miracle we haven't killed off more of ourselves, and chances are we will ultimately destroy ourselves if not directly, then through population growth.

ps Actually three people on the plane did die in the accident. I guess Fox forgot to mention that part...

Population growth as a serious problem is basically a myth. Every country falls below ZPG once it gets rich enough. I'm much more worried about bioengineering or nanotechnology. Once it gets to the point where people can engineer biological or mechanical plagues in their basements, we're probably pretty screwed.

Uh-huh. So although numerous scientists such as Professor Gary Peters, who has had a long-time interest in population issues, claim that population growth is humanity's greatest threat, you just dismiss it with a magic wave of your hand. A nice blanket statement such as "Every country falls below ZPG once it gets rich enough." is false of course, since the richest country in the world (the United States) has NEVER had zero population growth.

While I have no qualms about debating/considering religion and it's impact on society, population growth does not care what religion if any people subscribe to. Even if there was no religion, and even if there was peace across the globe, population growth would still be a problem.

ps That is a good read. I admire Rushdie.
