I know he doesn't have a lot of Game or Anime works but he is one of the more prolific composers from Japan in the last 40 years or so.

His situation kind of reminds me of my uncle. My uncle had quit smoking like 20 years prior to getting lung cancer but in the end he still ended up getting it.
I'd say he's the biggest name in instrumental music from Japan, both inside the country and internationally. Just listened to one of his podcasts for the first time a couple months ago, though I'm not very well familiar with his works.
Here's hoping his treatments go well.

Most of his oeuvre is non-game music. Some of his stuff is available on Amazon, and quite a bit of has been released in the U.S., so you won't have to pay import prices.
I just learned the word "oeuvre" thanks to you. All this time I've been limited to "discography," which makes less and less sense (considering both unpublished soundtracks and the fact that "discs" are going away in the age of digital distribution).
