The best classic game music and more
I ordered the Gold Everdrive from Stone Age Gamer yesterday and I picked up a NES console on ebay today. Total price was $300. Considering that some of the games I want to play for the NES vastly exceed $300, I feel I did fairly well.
First on the agenda is to replay Gargoyle's Quest 2 and restart Sweet Home, since I was playing those on an emulator on my PC. I could never get the image quality just right and I don't trust the audio reproduction of emulation, either.
I've had a chance to use an NES Everdrive and it's a great product, well worth the money. Especially if you want to play on an original console and not worry about lag or inaccuracies (or in my case, swapping carts out every 20 minutes or so). Huge, bulky CRT also highly recommended.
I'm looking to pick up the SNES one soon, just because the SNES is so difficult to emulate. The NES emus can get semi-reasonably in the ballpark, but I've never been happy with how SNES emulation looks, plays or sounds.
I saved a 20" Sony CRT with an S-video input, manufactured in November 1993. I paid around $450 for it at the time and I didn't save it because I anticipated that one day I would be buying an Everdrive. I saved it because it never broke. All the larger Sony sets I owned had to be repaired and were eventually recycled. 20" sets with an S-video connection were not easy to find in 1993 and I bought it because the SNES was S-video capable. I'll never forget how S-video looked that first time.

I didn't think ZSNES was bad back when I used it used it on my computer. Yes, when hooked up to newer TVs through a computer you will get lag which will pretty much kills the entire point of doing that (my friend demonstrated this to me) but being a collector I guess I like having the original carts. However, if you didn't nab certain things before the prices exploded I can understand in not wanting to do that.
However, to be honest, a lot of the more expensive games (Ninja Gaiden Trilogy, Dracula X) aren't that great to begin with. Hell, I like Mega Man X2 and X3 but I don't think the experiences they offer are really worth their asking prices these days even though they are good.
I have to ask though, can the Everdrive emulate games with the FX chip, Capcom's Cx4 (X2 and X3) or Star Ocean and Street Fighter Alpha 2's decompression chip? I can't imagine them being able to replicate those from a hardware standpoint unless they do it from a software point.

Chip support is hit or miss apparently. The lack of SA1 support is pretty glaring, considering the price, but the only two games I would really NEED to pick up to compensate for it are the two Kirby games that use it (I have Mario RPG already). The two Capcom chips are good to go though.
And yeah, the hard truth of game collecting is it's common for rare games to be pretty bad. I don't think I could ever pull the trigger on an Action 52 or Color a Dinosaur.
As for SNES emulation, someone in the speedrun scene explained you need a very powerful computer to properly emulate the SNES at 100% with no errors. For both my Wii Emulators and Virtual Consoles, there is a decent amount of lag even on CRT's (it goes away somewhat with a wired controller).

I don't know why, but I think it's awesome that the SNES is so hard to emulate perfectly.
For the first time in my life, the postal carrier did not leave a notice after attempting to make delivery. I was wondering why I didn't get the Everdrive this weekend. Of all the things over the years I've ordered, one of the most anticipated had to have some kind of problem. So now I have to go to the post office and pick it up.
I have the full ROM set of NES games and I've discovered a few that I'm going to have to play once ED arrives. I fell in love with Crisis Force immediately; it's probably good this never came out on the NES and it demonstrates how worthwhile it is to invest time in checking out Famicom titles. I'm getting impressions of superiority over Gradius/Salamander. Gimmick! and Totally Rad are a couple more I really want to dig into and they demonstrate how stupid I was for ditching the NES once the SNES came out.
Basically, once my pal ED gets here, I'm going to play Gargoyle's Quest 2, Sweet Home, Power Blade 1 + 2, Shatterhand, Crisis Force, Journey to Silius, Gimmick!, Totally Rad and Kid Dracula. The NES will definitely provide entertainment for the rest of my life.

With emulation , I've gotten tired of 'control lag' and general bugginess. But I don't even know where to begin with system organization and clutter (there are some interesting videos out there, but they all look like a nightmare in cord management). But I'll probably start small with a Genesis, NES and SNES...Although I always wanted a Super Famicom - so may go with a Japanese system and just use a cart/port converter (haven't found a sleek adaptor yet)
I am curious about how long games and systems will continue to work as years go by - especially those that have 'battery' for save states?
And then there's the whole debate around using a true CRT...I shutter at repurchasing and storing a 300 lb tv..

I'm not sure if you're aware, but if a cart-based game stops saving you can actually replace the battery inside and it will be as good as new for another 20 some years. It's not a battery you can buy at the store and there's some soldering involved but it's not that complicated.
As for the longevity of systems, anything that's disc based generally has more of a chance of crapping the bed because of moving parts... but this honestly doesn't seem to be a problem until you get the PS3 and XBox 360 which will eventually flame out because they ran so hot.
I got the NES Everdrive yesterday and tested out a lot of games. It does provide for an authentic gaming experience. Save states work fine. ROMs patched with a translation work fine. I had forgotten how good NES games look, since the black levels on CRTs are far superior to those on LCD/LED sets. The only real trick to making this all work is making sure you have proper ROMs. While it's quite easy to get ROMs, it's not so easy to get proper ROMs. If a patch doesn't work, then you have a bad ROM. I went through some serious googling to get all this straightened out, but it was worth it.
It's a very easy device to use, since you can leave it in the NES. All I do is swap the SD card between Everdrive and PC. ROMs load in 2-3 seconds. Think of the Everdrive as the NES and the SD card as a cartridge.

They are definitely build to order. My guess is that if they have one in stock, then they are referring to the PCB only. Once someone orders, they paint a shell and install the PCB. My guess is based on the fact that the Everdrive emits a powerful paint odor. Therefore, my only complaint is that they didn't let the paint "cure" before wrapping it up.
From the time I ordered until the time I could have received it was 2 days. The package required a signature, so I had to wait until I could find time to get to the post office.

It has my attention. But...modern TVs are too diverse; they're like PCs almost, since one's experience depends upon what model or features one has. With CRTs, everyone gets the same experience, with the exception of whether one has S-video or not. Basically, the console developers of the past knew that you had a CRT. Today, they don't know what you have and your experience will vary depending on whether you have a plasma, LED, or OLED, and will even vary between models of each type of display technology.
I'd need to know which display technology is the best, which model, etc. Obviously this system will not be optimized for CRT, since those don't have HDMI inputs.
The mere support of HDMI (which is not even a standard feature of the Analogue NT) doesn't mean it's not optimized for CRT. It's the original hardware in a new shell (modified to offer more input), so it's no less "optimized for CRT" than the NES itself. It even offers component, S-Video, and composite; you could use it on a CRT if you really wanted to.
It's crazy overpriced for what it is, and I'm certainly not saying anyone should buy it. But it's also among the most authentic of the NES clones, since it's less a clone and more of a suped-up original.
Yeah, you can connect not only to HDMI, but also VGA , component, and S-Video...pretty impressive...

As an aside...if I find lag issues are a non issue with this system, I couldn't jusetify a CRT just for Duck Hunt - but..learning that a CRT is required, I am interested in the 3D Famicom system now...
It's a fine luxury item (and cheaper than I thought; I had their CMVS price tag in my head), but a bit pricy for me, especially when they charge 50 bucks for things like an alternate color. If you have the money, it looks like you're in for a lot of fun.
It's interesting to me that they're offering refurbished Famicom controllers with NES (and AV Famicom) style connectors; as far as I know, all original Famicom controllers were hard-wired, so they're putting in some effort there. And no dogbones?

I paid $100 for the NES I recently bought. It does have a new 72 pin connector, but pretty much every listing on ebay advertises that. The SNES I bought was also $100.
Here are the folders and their contents on my NES Everdrive. It took me months to get things set up. I got most of the folder names from gamefaqs and I haven't verified if all of the games are really of the type that they specify. The [P] indicates I have applied the English patch from romhacking.net.
ABOMINATIONS: I learned about many of these by watching the Angry Video Game Nerd. The rest are from my memories and searching google for "worst NES games". I haven't had a chance to verify that all of these are abominations, but of those I have tried, I am convinced.
