Soundtrack Central The best classic game music and more

I was recently reminded of what a great soundtrack Crimson Shroud had, composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto, Mitsuhiro Kaneda and others. Even though it's not a tactical RPG in the usual sense, it has that style of music that I associate with that genre: bombastic, obviously composed for a fantasy setting, and drawn out compositions that seem to be more conducive to long-term battle settings than the short bouts in regular RPGs. Sakimoto and Masaharu Iwata obviously have a lot of great music in this style, but there are a number of other greats as well, like Hiroshi Tamawari, mostly known for Vandal Hearts.

However, it also seems there hasn't been much of this style of music lately. So, can you help me out with some recommendations? Either new stuff or older, somewhat obscure stuff I may have missed? Doesn't need to be from tactical RPGs, just stuff that you think would fit in one.

Warsong on the Genesis.

Bloody amazing.

Senjo no Valkyria / Valkyria Chronicles was a great underrated game, and Sakimoto score.  Can't recommend both enough.  I can't speak for the sequels though.

It's also not really the same as more classical tactics games' soundtracks, but you can check out The Banner Saga too.

Vandal Hearts 1 and 2 have very good soundtracks.  I am also a huge, huge fan of the TearRingSaga and Berwick Saga soundtracks.

Try Tenpei Sato and the Nippon Ichi group of soundtracks, especially if you like lighter/goofier themes. The Disgaea soundtracks are consistently excellent. Maybe a bit of an acquired taste though. But if you like one, you'll probably like them all.

I liked the music from the N1 soundtracks too (ie. La Pucelle, Disgaea).

Yeah, Valkyria Chronicles is a great game with a great soundtrack. The sequels mostly just recycled music from the first one, though.

Tried some Banner Saga already, slightly more serene than what I'm looking for, but good stuff nevertheless.

Hey guys, hope you don't mind me bumping this old topic. I'm constantly on the lookout for that "tactical RPG sound", and now especially I'm again looking for new(ish) stuff or hidden gems that I might not have heard. Got any more tips to give?

Fire Emblem Shadows of Valentia. Shocked me. I've never been high on Fire Emblem music, but the compositions and sound quality are fantastic. It kind of has that "too much music" problem, given its size, but I'm kind of okay with that.

Seems like quite a bit of live performances too. Maybe all of it? It's hard to tell, really.

Edit: And no mention of Ogre Battle (any) so far? I'm surprised. Final Fantasy Tactics A2 is high quality as well (far better than the original Tactics Advance soundtrack).

Front Mission 1 is excellent for a snes soundtrack, especially Shimomura's tracks. That lady can touch every type of game and make it a success.

The Fire Emblem serie has consistently great soundtracks but the two Radiant episodes stand above the others in my opinion.

Wild Arms XF is cruelly underrated, both the game and it's soundtrack. Like the main games, it has a refreshing western vibe to it.

You can also check Sakura Wars V, I was kinda impressed by this one.
