Not that you were probably considering it, but please, whatever you do, don't move to the deep South. Louisiana and Mississippi r teh pits. Hurricanes, summer starts in March and ends in November, spring and fall do not exist in any significant quantity, humidity is usually hovering around 100% (which is really the killer, much worse than sheer heat), we rank close to the bottom on any list where higher is better, and um...I can't find any good things to say. And despite all of this, there are still *far too many* people in my city, apparently none of them traffic engineers, so we often spend lots of the day trying to go short distances.  Oh yeah, we just basically lost New Orleans which was the main attraction here. So if you hadn't already crossed those off, allow me to narrow your choices a bit smile

I don't know whether this counts as "deep south," but I'm rather fond of Atlanta.

Well, you could consider being a hobo for a while.  Rent is cheap, and this way you can see as much of the US as you want at your own pace.  Also, you don't have to worry about a specific diet since you eat whatever you can get, and you get to sing "Big Rock Candy Mountain" wherever you go... of course your chances of finding a date are not so good, and the health insurance is pretty bad, but hey it's probably not worse than what many Americans have anyway.

cheers,
