Well it's all about the games...but geeze...not very impressed...just wish Apple and Nintendo would partner on something to really wow us.  as an aside, I'm really getting into VR...just got a PSVR and waiting for a ps4pro.    This nintendo product just seems like more of the same.

I have really disliked having to play great games portably (and stressing my neck) for so many years, so I guess this solves that.

But apparently the Nintendo loyal are impressed...anyway...

avatar! Oct 20, 2016

I agree that this is not "wow" impressive. On the other hand, I do think it's a solid concept. Portable and playable on the big screen at the same time. As some other have said, this is probably what the Wii U should have been in the first place. Of course it is all about the games.

FuryofFrog Oct 20, 2016

I just want 1 standard controller. One. Please. I don't want a separate screen that is likely to be of poor resolution played with strange mini controllers. I want to play new iterations of classic franchises. F-Zero, Metroid, Pilot Wings, Advance Wars. Why won't you show us new games Nintendo? Showing us Skyrim is just like showing us Arkham City for Wii U all over again. You are already a generation behind. Instead show me a NEW game. Back compatibility? Does this play 3DS games? You are killing the Wii U with this thing. Are you also killing the 3DS?

This all looks very......social and interactive and such.......in theory yes, cool. As a 20 something year old guy most of my gaming is done by myself. The rest is fighting games and beat 'em ups.

Show me classic Nintendo magic. God it really is to early to tell with a lot of this stuff. I am so scared for Nintendo. Cautious pessimism here. Prove me wrong Ninty.

That moment always makes me cringe.

On-topic: I like it and I'm going to buy it, like I have bought all of Nintendo's home consoles to date because I'm a shameless fanboy.
I like the idea of being able to play your home console games on the go, and this looks like it's a better alternative to Remote Play on PS4, which is too much of a hassle.

The only thing I'm worried about is the battery life and the price tag.

avatar! Oct 21, 2016 (edited Oct 21, 2016)

I imagine price will be $299. That's my guess. Now, why would a man cringe at a video game? Perhaps because he's a "miserable little pile of secrets" tongue

I was very pleasantly surprised. Whatever about the system itself, I fully expected the early reveal to say next to nothing, leave us still wondering what the system actually is and just give us a terrible name. And yet instead of people waffling on about nothing, we were given a pretty slick promo that actually shows what this console is and what its selling points are, something the WiiU never managed to achieve.

So on the promo alone, I was surprised and impressed.

As for the system, I think it looks pretty great. I'm always in when it comes to Nintendo handhelds but the home consoles really need to sell to me. This is kind of both and seems to be both in what could turn out to be a very useful way for me. I like the look of the system itself and I like that we got a glimpse of what looks like a proper new Mario game rather than a bland NSMB game again.

So I'm in.

I do have questions and reservations of course. Support is going to be an ongoing problem for Nintendo and I'm not convinced things are going to change drastically with this system, especially as the power limitations could make some multiplatform games struggle badly to the point where they don't bother making them. The price won't be much of a limiting factor for me personally unless it's crazy but there is one big limit that could kick in as a result of that - the possibility of multiple units in one household. In my house, we have three active 3DS units. One for me and the others for my kids. The 3DS sold much less than the DS but still sold huge numbers and I think some of that has to be down to families buying more than one so each family member gets their own.

But will we buy more than one of these? Totally depends on the price. Although I can see another factor being that my kids would have lost those controller pieces long ago. In fact, I've probably already lost the left side of my Switch controller...

Still, for now I'm in.

TerraEpon Oct 21, 2016

Of course, if it means the only Nintendo console going forward, that is likely to somewhat make up for it. That said, its portable form still seems pretty bulky -- even the Vita pushes it in the size department and this looks bigger than that.
And the price thing, year, not to many people will shell out for a portable if it's $300.

Yet I certainly don't see the 3DS lasting much longer if only because of its age.

Nintendo has said this is primarily a home console, not a portable. I would say there's about a 0.01% chance this is supposed to replace the 3DS. I don't expect it to be compatible with 3DS games, and that's fine. The only questions/issue I have is with the mechanics. Obviously, things tend to degrade over time. This console has a LOT of moving parts, and moving under human guidance. Humans, are dumb. They tend to destroy more than create, and thus I can already see people "complaining" about how their controllers no longer connect to the main system etc. (after they pummel it to bits)! Myself, I don't really tend to take this portable. However, if I'm going on a business trip or something like that, maybe it won't be so bad to be able to play games on the go? Overall, I think it was a smart move by Nintendo.

XLord007 Oct 22, 2016

I think Nintendo did a great job unveiling the Switch, and the Nintendo faithful seem excited, so I guess that's something, but I have big doubts as to its market potential. The video shows off all of these potential use cases that really aren't that believable. I understand that they are supposed to be aspirational use cases, but still.

Outside of the Nintendo faithful and some elements of the PAX crowd, I don't see less committed gamers being drawn away from the smartphones and tablets they already have with this. Hardcore console and PC gamers won't care because the system isn't powerful enough for AAA third party games. Don't be fooled by Nintendo's list of supporters... the only way this gets any meaningful, long-term third party support is if it actually catches on as a 3DS replacement. And speaking of that, I have to wonder if this will be the only form the system takes. Since it uses small game cards like 3DS software, I kind of wonder if Nintendo will later release a smaller, truly portable version of the system with a smaller screen and better battery life that plays the same games or if this hybrid console will be the only form factor.

Anyway, back to what they did show: I really like the look of the new pro controller. It shows they're listening, and looks much improved over the Wii U pro controller. The puppy dog JoyCon grip also looks nice for those not interested in springing for a pro controller. I hope they actually let you boot games off of SD cards this time around. The 3DS allows this, but for some reason the Wii U requires an actual external HDD if you run out of internal memory, even though the system has an SD card slot. I will never understand this decision. I also hope the base unit has an ethernet port so you don't need the USB adapter again. Nintendo said more hardware details will come early next year, so hopefully we'll get answers. They also won't say whether the system has a touchscreen, whether the JoyCon pieces have motion controls, or whether the system is easy to port phone/tablet games to, but all of those things are rumored to be in the cards. Word is Nintendo didn't address these rumored features in the opening video because they wanted to focus on core Nintendo fans first. Smart.

As for me, of course I'll get one at launch because I have no self-control when it comes to new Nintendo hardware, but if I was a more rational purchaser, I'd probably be more curious than motivated to buy. I have all of the great Nintendo Wii U games, but I barely play them compared to the time I spend playing indie games on PC/PS4 and the occasional AAA third-party title with a good feedback loop (previously MGSV, now SFV).

Lastly, if this is intended to replace the 3DS as well as the Wii U, there had better be a way to transfer StreetPass progress over.

I think it will replace 3DS game development, if not the 3DS itself. Nintendo has been vocal about wanting to get down to one development environment for some time to get away from having to make separate home and portable version of all of its games, and the Switch looks to do just that. The question in my mind is just if the Switch will also be the true portable console or if another piece of hardware will be released later that runs the same OS and games in a smaller form factor.

Also, for the record, Nintendo has said that the Switch will not be backward with compatible with any existing physical games for any prior Nintendo system. No word on digital games yet.

This. Personally, I was kind of worried how the WiiU controller tablets would fare over time but most people I know seem to be taking care of those and they seem pretty well built. However, all the sliding parts here and there just exasperate my worries with this console and I say this as someone who doesn't even want to buy another console/handheld in any form.

I can't help but think this is going to be an annoying problem as time goes on for second hand stores. They're probably going to have to be extra vigilant when inspecting consoles, especially during its later years and when it's discontinued.

Jay Oct 23, 2016

Generally Nintendo seem pretty good at making things that don't break but I see the bigger risk is losing those little controller bits when an have all my friends around for that roof party or when I'm on that plane.

Business as usual for them..disappointing, but then I've totally gotten into setting up a proper retro game environment.  Add another section to the entertainment center! ;-)

The Wii, Wii U, GBA, DS, and 3DS were all backwards compatible, so I fail to see how this is "business as usual."

Ashley Winchester Oct 25, 2016

No offense to anyone (famous last words) but can we honestly drop the whole "I'm upset because there's no backwards compatibility" thing? Yes, some consoles in the past had it but didn't Sony already prove trying to squeeze this in with the PS3's Emotion Engine that raising the cost for this isn't the trade off everyone thinks it is?

I think the bigger issue here is no one will confirm if Skyrim or that NBA game is coming to the Switch. If those games don't come to the Switch despite Nintendo showing them off in the trailer people (including myself) are just going to rail on Nintendo - and for good reason.

brandonk Oct 25, 2016 (edited Oct 25, 2016)

I guess the thing that most bothered me was the complete re-hash re-purchase process of their back catalogue.  Nintendo's virtual console on the Wii and the Wii U platform distinction.  (and yes there was some type of one time transfer between systems if I recall, that I never did...)  How about if you bought the game, you get it for whatever platform it gets released on for life...done~! (I think Sony's service to play backlog catalogue may be a step in this direction, granted you pay a monthly fee)

And then to completely disable Gamecube playback on the Wii U...that wasn't even necessary as can be overturned via a system hack.  Anyway these are minor quibbles...I've gone a different path then demanding my systems be multi-gen comptabile

"No confusing gamepad to explain. No motion gimmicks. No talk of "software partners" or marketing strategy. Just a very straightforward pitch to folks who like Nintendo, who like video games, or both.  And that's incredibly smart."

Pedrith Nov 27, 2016

I admit that I am very curious about the Nintendo Switch.  I've seen in videos that it will be a 720p screen and heard rumours the cartridges will offer more storage than blu-ray.  Heck my usb key offers more storage than a blu-ray.  While I may never take it on the go, I am excited that the newest Dragon Quest will be on the switch, while the new Zelda looks interesting.  I'm willing to wait for more info in regard to tech specs, but from what I have read online it seems pretty top of the line (although I'm not tech savvy so I might be wrong)  I'm happy with the companies lined up for third party support and hope that Bloodstained will come out for the Switch in due time.  If Falcom would port over their YS series and if we get some Tales games (both old and new) I will be more than happy.

The next news release in January can't come soon enough.

I'd worry about Bloodstained coming out at all before I'd worry about it coming to another console. I honestly thought everything was fine w/the demo released around e3, but IGA's announcement threw everything astray.

Must have missed it. What was the announcement?

Pedrith Nov 28, 2016

I'm not to worried about Bloodstained being delayed.  It gives me time to save up to upgrade my pledge.  Plus in the last update they have hired on more people to help with game development.  I rather they take their time and get it right.

Yeah, I'm probably being a worry wart with this one; I think the whole Mighty No.9 thing is still fresh in my mind which is why I'm so apprehensive. Still, a big name doesn't does always equate to gold.

I don't know if I'll ever play Bloodstained honestly, but maybe we'll get a good OST out of it and I'll pick that up if there's a commercial release.

I think Nintendo will do a good job. By the way, I have to wonder, how much that Inafune make off MN9?

I'm confused here. I was referring to being worried about Bloodstained; not the Switch.

I haven't had much of a stake in Nintendo since the SNES days. I hope the Switch is successful, but I'm not really interested in modern games. Hell, I haven't played any of my older ones for quite a while. Eh, it is what it is...

I would lower my expectations here. Most reports peg it as being a bit more powerful than a Wii U but certainly less powerful than a PS4 Amateur. The specs are on the modest side because it uses a mobile architecture that has to prioritize battery life over performance.

Nintendo’s full words on the name:

“We decided that this name would be the best fit for our product for two reasons. It represents one of the defining features of the Switch, the ability to seamlessly ‘switch’ between the TV screen and Switch’s screen, while also embodying the idea of being a ‘switch’ that will flip, and change the way people experience entertainment in their daily lives.”

Nintendo was also asked about what the company wanted people to take away from Switch’s announcement trailer. To that, the big N said:

“We wanted to show people just how much of an enjoyable difference it will make in their entertainment experiences, by having them see and hear for themselves what it can do in an easy-to-digest manner. It allows people to enjoy a home console experience not only in front of a TV, but in rooms with no TV, or outside altogether. And because the controllers are detachable from the main body of the console, each of its forms offer different play experiences for people to enjoy.”

"Nintendo Switch Pre-Orders Start Tomorrow For The Lucky Few"

" I worry that severely limited stock in the first few months could damage the Switch's ability to gain a foothold in advance of the holiday season, when Xbox One and PS4 will be getting new slates of exciting games and Microsoft will likely break the bank to push the Scorpio."

Pedrith Jan 13, 2017

Well I preordered my copy today.  With the trade in deals at EB games it cut just under $200 canadian off the price.  Basically I traded all my 3ds games except DQ7 as I'm still playing it, and Bravely Default collector's edition.  I traded in all my ps3 games except for Deus Ex Human Revolution, Eternal Sonata, Odin Sphere, and Dragon's Crown.

Once I finish DQ7 it and the 3ds will be traded in too.

Amazingu Jan 13, 2017

I was ready to buy the Switch day one, but after yesterday's presentation, I think I'm gonna hold off for a bit.
Zelda at launch is VERY tempting, but March is packed with great games, so I'd rather spend less money on more games, than a whole lot of money just to play one.

I'll get one the day Mario or Xenoblade 2 is released though, whichever comes first.

Jodo Kast Jan 14, 2017

I never did get the Wii U, so the revised Mario Kart 8 looks appealing. My main draw to the Switch is Mario Odyssey, as it looks like the successor to Mario 64 more so than Sunshine or the Galaxies.

XLord007 Jan 14, 2017 (edited Jan 14, 2017)

I had no trouble securing pre-orders at several retailers, and I've watched pre-orders go in and out of stock, back and forth, all day, so I think this will be more like Wii U and less like Wii in terms of acquisition difficulty. Launching off season helps a lot with this. I'm sure it would be much harder if this was launching in November. What's really baffling is how I had no trouble getting pre-orders for this, but after two months I still can't get any kind of order for an NES Classic.
