Nintendo will follow up its smash hit NES microconsole with a mini version of the SNES, sources close to the company have confirmed to Eurogamer.

The SNES mini (or, to continue Nintendo's official branding, likely the Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System) is currently scheduled to launch in time for Christmas this year. Development of the device is already under way, our sources have indicated.

Nintendo's plans for SNES mini are also a major reason why last year's NES mini did not see a reprieve from discontinuation, Eurogamer understands, despite the latter's continued popularity and sell-out status.

I bet this one will have even more demand for it. Gotta pre-order it to give as a gift.

If I wanted this thing I wouldn't buy it. I'm not going to support an item like this when they left so many other people empty handed with their previous item. I'm kind of pleased that I'm not interested in Nintendo's products at the moment.

Amazingu Apr 19, 2017

Yeah, let's hope they don't f--- up supply AGAIN.
Apparently they discontinued the NES Mini so that they could start production on the SNES Mini (those are the rumors anyway), so they better make damn sure there's enough of these to go around.

Let's place some bets as to price/content!

My guess is they won't be doing another "30 games for $60" deal. They're too stingy for that, considering they charge 8 or 9 bucks for SNES games on VC.

I'm guessing it will either be 30 games again, but priced around $100 (they know now people will pay good money for these things), OR they'll stay at the $60 price point but offer fewer games, like maybe 15 - 20 or so.
It was basically $2 per game for the NES Mini, so I assume it will be about $4 per game for SNES.

Assuming it's 15 for now, I'm guessing this will be the line-up:

- Super Mario World
- Super Mario All-Stars
- Super Mario Kart
- Super Metroid
- Link to the Past
- F-Zero
- Earthbound
- Kirby Super Star
- Donkey Kong Country (just one of them, probably the first one)
- Mega Man X (or 7, but probably X)
- Street Fighter 2
- Super Ghouls and Ghosts
- Super Castlevania 4
- Contra 3
- Final Fantasy 4 (or 6? Hopefully? Most likely not both. If SQEX want to troll people, they'll only include 5)

NOT expecting Chrono Trigger, because that would be too generous for SQEX. Not expecting Secret of Mana either, what with the collection coming to Switch.

Also not expecting Star Fox or any other game that uses the SFX chip.

In any case, it's hard to f--- up a collection of SNES games, so I'm definitely going to pre-order this time.

Amazingu wrote:

Well, I'm sure X2 and X3 are off the table since they have the Cx4 chip, but that's rather moot as the original game is the arguably the best of the three and most iconic. X2 and X3 are good, but they're standard sequels.

Personally I'm not very fond of 7 (I won't raddle off my problems with it) but I will admit that would probably sell a lot of units if it was included.

Selection? Hard to mess up. Emulation? LOTS of potential to screw up. LOTS and LOTS of potential to mess that up. There's so much going on under the hood of an SNES, I wouldn't trust anything other than the original hardware.

30 games seems to be consistent with these types of bundles overall, but I do expect a price bump as well to about, say, $80. You know, because 16 bits and all. So...30 games for $80, says I.

Picks? I expect the usual suspects. The SNES library I believe has less depth overall than the NES, while having more "obvious" classics. Your list above covers the minimum of what I expect to see. I am predicting FFIV (I think FFVI and CT would be too hard to emulate...their 32 bit versions had the poor Playstation gasping for air). Secret of Mana would be a nice pick to slip in there.

Edit: Put me down as predicting Pilotwings and the SNES Simcity.

Edit Edit: I would say X1. MM7 does not seem to generate much interest, from what I've seen. X1 was a landmark game in a lot of ways. It really changed how people played Megaman games.

You know, I want to argue against this point, but I don't think I can actually forge a valid defense against it. I'm not exactly sure why I want to conjure an argument against this. Maybe because I think any given crappy SNES game is better than an given, crappy NES game?

GoldfishX Apr 20, 2017

Don't get me wrong, I think there are a lot of sleeper hit titles on the SNES, but I don't expect to see, say, Ninja Warriors or Plok or Tiny Toons or Darius Twin or Arcana or Wild Guns or Lufia II or Legend of the Mysical Ninja or R-Type III/Super R-Type appear. All games I love and played to death, but not ones I would expect to see define the SNES "canon" on this thing. Turtles in Time showed off the system beautifully, but I think licensing would be a huge issue with that one, otherwise that would be an easy pick from me.

On the flipside...They could have thrown pretty much any NES Castlevania or Megaman or Ninja Gaiden or Contra (sans Contra Force) on the NES Mini and it would have been a solid pick, regardless of the debate that COULD go on. On the SNES, we KNOW Castlevania IV is going to be there and it's highly unlikely Megaman X won't be there.

Edit: Forgot Actraiser. Actraiser is probably a safe pick. That game enjoys a well-deserved cult status and showed off the system very early on.

Sure, I meant it purely in the selection sense.
I think they'll make sure everything runs well, or at the very least avoid games that might be tricky.

Edit: Put me down as predicting Pilotwings and the SNES Simcity.

I'm kind of expecting Pilotwings as well, yeah.
Didn't even think of SimCity!

Edit Edit: I would say X1. MM7 does not seem to generate much interest, from what I've seen. X1 was a landmark game in a lot of ways. It really changed how people played Megaman games.

Yep, so I'm pretty sure X1 will be on there.
I liked 7 a lot, but I seem to be in the minority.

GoldfishX Apr 20, 2017

I loved MM7, but when it comes to "best SNES game" discussions, it comes off sounding like an afterthought. I ended up importing Rockman and Forte directly because of MM7.

Don't worry, they will.

stingray2501 Apr 21, 2017

I am curious to see if they use downloadable roms again for this, like the did with the SNES mini.

I'm sure a few more sports games will make the cut too, gonna say that Ken Griffey Jr baseball will be on there for sure, guessing that NHL 94 and NBA Jam will also make the cut.

Had to google this....great video on the subject

I think you must have meant the NES Classic - and video talks about them likely using a downloaded rom on the Wii Virtual console.

Yeah, I mean this whole rush on the classic and the upcoming SNES Mini - When you look at the available alternatives - it's laughable what Nintendo is doing to its customers and fans.

Adam Corn Jun 26, 2017

And it's official. Nintendo's new mini-sized Super NES Classic Edition launches September 29th (U.S. retail price $79.99) with the following 21 games:

- Contra III: The Alien Wars
- Donkey Kong Country
- EarthBound
- Final Fantasy III (FFVI)
- F-ZERO
- Kirby Super Star
- Kirby’s Dream Course
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
- Mega Man X
- Secret of Mana
- Star Fox
- Star Fox 2
- Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
- Super Castlevania IV
- Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts
- Super Mario Kart
- Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
- Super Mario World
- Super Metroid
- Super Punch-Out!!
- Yoshi’s Island

Tons of classic titles on there, but the big surprise of course is Star Fox 2, which was cancelled after development and has never seen release until now.

Thoughts on the title selection? Any particularly pleasant surprises or especially painful omissions?

I'd also love to hear everyone's preference on the U.S. design vs the Super Famicom'esque European one.

Also props to Amazingu for nailing 13 1/2 of his 15 title predictions, and GoldfishX for almost perfectly predicting the pricing package. smile

Thanks smile

Honestly, it wasn't hard to guess, because there's a pretty large consensus on what the console's best first party games are (pretty much all of them), and which 3rd party games were going to be in there, based on the NES Classic.

That said, the Japanese lineup is, again, slightly different:
https://topics.nintendo.co.jp/c/article … 45a6d.html

- Contra III: The Alien Wars
- Donkey Kong Country
- Final Fantasy III (FFVI)
- F-ZERO
- Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem
- Kirby Super Star
- The Legend of the Mystical Ninja
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
- Mega Man X
- Secret of Mana
- Star Fox
- Star Fox 2
- Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts
- Super Mario Kart
- Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
- Super Mario World
- Super Metroid
- Super Soccer
- Super Street Fighter II
- Tetris Attack
- Yoshi’s Island

So it dumps EarthBound, Kirby’s Dream Course, Super Castlevania IV, Super Punch-Out!! in favor of a Fire Emblem (makes sense), Mystical Ninja (yay!), Super Soccer (WTF!?), and Tetris Attack.

And, interestingly, Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting in favor of Super SF II, which is definitely the better game. Wonder why Capcom made that decision though.

Filing the SNES mini under things I must avoid and not buy.

raynebc Jun 27, 2017

It would be nice to be able to get it at list price, but given how they're handling the Switch, Nintendo still has no damn clue about how to meet demand.

Sami Jun 27, 2017

That is an excellent collection. This will be a keeper, provided it's possible to get it in the first place.

jb Jun 27, 2017

It's a really great selection of games and the addition of Star Fox 2 is really cool from a preservation of video game history perspective, but I don't think it's enough to pique my interest enough to bother with the mad rush that will surely ensue.

Rrolack Jun 27, 2017

I'm not going to buy this either, but I applaud the decision to include Star Fox 2.

If Nintendo later releases an OST for the game, that would be ridiculously cool.  I give it a 2% chance.

Rrolack wrote:

This. Think Star Fox 2 is a cool inclusion, but it's not enough to make me want it. Again, I'd buy it and never touch it. I just unloaded my PS3, Saturn and Gamecube anyway.

GoldfishX Jul 1, 2017

I just wish I was wrong on the lower game count (boo!) and I pray I'm wrong on any potential emulation issues. The SNES is a tricky bastard to emulate. And they dove right in and are tossing Final Fantasy III and Yoshi's Island right in there, so...

We shall see.

Ashley Winchester Jul 1, 2017

GoldfishX wrote:

I don't know. I think I'm a bit okay with the lower game count because some the those games (the RPGs) are somewhat beefy. I know one could say that about the NES Mini, but that's due to things like NES difficulty spikes, not actual content.

GoldfishX Jul 1, 2017

Well, let's be real...Save for Virtual Console sales, most of the profit was made off of these games a long time ago. Space is not a concern. I really think they are being stingy. If the aim was to re-introduce the SNES to people that didn't have the privilege of growing up with it, they really could have gone the extra mile.

Oh well, I'm sitting here with carts of everything here that I want, so I'm not the one getting hosed if this thing doesn't live up to expectations.

Amazingu Jul 1, 2017

GoldfishX wrote:

I think Ashley meant "beefy" in terms of game length, not file size.
The NES classic had mostly short games, but the SNES Mini has more time-consuming titles.

Space was never a concern because even the NES classic had 2GB of flash memory if I recall correctly.

Shouldn't be much of a concern with SNES Classic also, if it would have the same 2GB of flash memory. I think majority of SNES library in rom + zipped is around 1,6gb and you never would have more than 10% of those games on your console probably.

XLord007 Jul 8, 2017

Super excited about this, especially with Star Fox 2 finally getting released. The lineup is missing a few SNES essentials, but it's still a pretty great lineup overall and doesn't have any outright junk games like the NES Classic did (cough ICE CLIMBER cough cough).

Ashley Winchester Jul 8, 2017

Amazingu wrote:

I'm sure I'm the only person on the planet that would want Alpha 2 instead, right? Hahaha!

I'd honestly like a non-Street Fighter fighter on here as well, but Nintendo let Rare go so KI is out of the question. I don't know if a T rated game would fly on here but I think KI would would be the only non-Street Fighter fighter that would fly.

I mean I guess they could have gotten Primal Rage, LOL.

GoldfishX Jul 9, 2017

In the US, Super SFII was released to relative apathy. That was when the burnout factor on SF started to kick in. In the traditional cannon here, Hyper Fighting is considered the "essential" SNES version of Street Fighter.

Yeah, the online consensus definitely seems to be that the US is getting the better deal in this regard at least.
I think Super SFII is much better, but I will admit I'm a very casual fighting game fan.
