Soundtrack Central The best classic game music and more

I am looking for some VGM cds that have sound effects from the game on them.  I don't have any particular ideas at the moment ( ^^ ) but I figured that someone around here would have one or two.

The reason for this, is that I have done some sound design for a local theatre, and I thought it would be interesting to have that kind of resource to draw from, should the occasion arise.  ^-^

I've already used the ghost ship theme from Chrono Cross in a small excerpt from "Rhinoceros", and gotten a dance choreographer enthralled with Yoko Kanno's music.

That was fun.

In addition, I guess you could say I'm a bit new to finding good VGM.  I had a 'jaw-on-the-floor' experience when I first heard the opener to Chrono Cross, and have never really recovered from it.  Since then, I've been trying to discover new composers and sounds, but haven't had the resources to really 'stretch' out and look around.  Does anyone have any albums or composers that they feel are worth every penny to buy?

I prefer to get the arranged tracks and live instrumental music, but good 8 bit music is just as worthy of a listen, in my opinion.

And don't worry about suggesting an album that is completely standard; i.e. everyone has it already.  I probably don't. smile

Thanks!  big_smile

OSTs that have sound effect tracks (that I know of/own):

Justice High School: Legion of Heroes
Captain Commando ~ G.S.M. Capcom 5
Street Fighter II G.S.M. Capcom 4 Alfh Lyra
Street Fighter Zero OST
Street Fighter Zero 2 OST
Street Fighter Zero 3 OST
Super Street Fighter II OST
Vampire Another Selection ~The Unreleased Takes~
Vampire Savior- The Lord of Vampire Original Soundtrack
Guilty Gear Original Soundtrack
Guilty Gear X Original Soundtrack
Guity Gear XX #Reload Korean Version Original Soundtrack
Bakumatsu Roman The Second Act Gekka no Kenshi OST (Last Blade 2 OST)
Nintendo 64 Original Soundtrack Greatest Hits (05. KI Gold - Jago is actually a small collection of SE)
Rockman the Power Battle
Rockman 2 The Power Fighters
Metal Gear Ac!d & Ac!d² Original Soundtrack

Now, those are pretty much all fighting game soundtracks, so that's mostly punches, kicks, and lots of flashy special move sounds. The Metal gear Ac!d soundtrack has some nice computery sound effects, including the ever-popular codec beep.

As for music recommendation, I'll leave that to the pros here (though for starters, I recommend pretty much everything listed above).

Don't forget Breath of Fire 3, where they have sound effects over the boss music -- even on the boxset :-(

The N64 Smash Bros. soundtrack (why am I specifying - those @#%$s never released an ost for Melee) has a track on the second disc with something like 20 minutes of sound effects and voice, as I recall.

Mostly old or relatively old game soundtracks have sound-effects featured on the CD (for example most PCCB-XXXXX scitron releases), so it may not be fitting for your needs (as it seems you'd rather want realistic ones).

You'd better look out on sound-effects specific CDs (but those aren't cheap as they're most of the time coming with a licence for free use of those in your prods).

Smeg Jul 5, 2006

Dunno what kind of sound effects you're looking for, but if you want an "old school" vibe many NSF files include sound effects.

Schala Jul 5, 2006

If you're looking to actually buy some CDs, I'm selling a few fighting game soundtracks that have voice and sound effects (some of which I'm shuddering at right now..."I hope Yuri's all right!"). ^_~

Kenology Jul 5, 2006

Super Mario World had a sound effects collection from Super Mario 1,3, & World at the end of disc 2.

Amazingu Jul 6, 2006

The  Bio Hazard Code Veronica soundtrack came with a mini-disc featuring lots of creaking floors and moaning zombies, which was kinda cool.
It also had some parts of the dialogue if I remember correctly.

POPOBOT5000 - that is a sweet list.  Thanks a lot!

McCall - I have heard that the Ys music was good.  Do you have any other album suggestions for that series?

TerraEpon - Got a copy of that.  Still working my way through the discs.  ^-^

Qui-Gon Joe - Thanks!  I'll have to look that up. *nods*

dma - actually, it doesn't matter if the sound effects are realistic or not.  I don't know what I may need from production to production - one play may require no sound, while the next is a wall of space/time distortion.  All I'm trying to do at the moment is build a library to draw from the next time I need it.  And since most game music is over-looked in the 'classical' arts field (read:  music/theatre, especially at my school), I thought it would be kind of neat to give an audience that sort of exposure.
Plus, I'm cheating here.  It's always a good idea to use music that your audience doesn't know, if you're going to use it.  That way, they don't have any predetermined attachments to it, and you can create the atmosphere you are going for more easily.
(think trying to play the Imperial March onstage.  The audience would expect Darth Vader to come strolling out - which would pull them out of the experience, causing your production to crash and burn)
And yeah, I need to pick up a bunch of sound effects cds.  For some reason, they don't sell them used around here.... wink

Smeg - Forgive me, but what's an 'NSF'?

Schala - Do you have a list handy?  Send me an e-mail!  ^-^

Kenology - Are we talking the game or the soundtrack?  If it was the game, can you play it on a conventional cd player?  (and if we're talking GameCube, I'm curious.  Could you play that in a cd player, if it were possible?)

Amazingu - that sounds horribly, wickedly cool.  Has it gone the way of the dodo, or is it still possible to find that thing? big_smile

Zane Jul 6, 2006

Going on Amazingu's post, I have two  Biohazard CDs that have sound effects and dialogue on them. One is the Symphony Op.91 album that has a second disc with effects and dialogue, and the other is the original Biohazard Remix CD that has various intros and voice cuts within the tracks for added "drama". And by "drama" I mean "hilarity".

NES sound files. Basically the sound data directly from the game, in a format playable by a sound emulator. Winamp input plugins exist to do this, and using Winamp's diskwriter output plugin you can then write the sound effects out to wav files for further manipulation with whatever sound tools you use.

Players (including Winamp plugins) can be found here: http://www.zophar.net/utilities/nsf.html

NSFs can be found here: http://www.zophar.net/nsf/

Similar formats exist for just about every console with sequenced music, but most aside from NSFs don't contain sound effects.

Also, Kenology is referring to this: http://gmronline.com/info.asp?CatNumber=WPCL-233~4

That'll set you back a pretty penny if you decide to track a copy down.

I thought the Super Mario World ost was one of those albums that had dropped in value in recent times for no apparent reason?  Or maybe I'm thinking of something else.
