...While I'm happy with Persona and Legendia, I look forward to further announcement on the two composers who I think must be there but have been neglected so far.

Chris May 8, 2009 (edited May 8, 2009)

Thanks for the heads up Cedille! Some misinformation is floating around about the concert, so here are the correct major details announced so far taken from SEMO:

On August 2, 2009, Famitsu will present the orchestral concert Press Start -Symphony of Games- 2009 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space. It is the fourth concert of the annual Press Start series. Once again, it is planned by composers Nobuo Uematsu and Shogo Sakai, game designers Masahiro Sakurai, scenario writer Kazushige Nojima, and conductor Taizo Takemoto.

As with previous concerts in the series, it will feature performances from multiple game titles and will feature several special guests. At present, the organisers have revealed the concert will feature pieces from Persona 4 ("The Poem for Everyone's Souls", "Reach Out for the Truth", "A Corner of Memories"), Tales of Legendia ("melfes ~ Shining Blue"), Rhythm Heaven ("Ninja"), and Ore No Shikabane Wo Koeteike ("Flower"). There will also be medleys dedicated to the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Super Mario Bros. series. More announcements are expected shortly.

A new interview with Shoji Meguro has just been posted to GameSetWatch.  The discussion is on the subject of the vocal themes of Persona 4, including "Reach Out to the Truth," which will be performed at the Press Start Symphony of Games concert in Ikebukuro.

Sound Current: 'Reaching Out to the Truth - Vocal Tracks in Persona 4'

As with the Tenchu 4 composer interview that was part of this series of articles, the text is online in four languages, including French, Italian and the original Japanese.

An interview with Masahiro Sakurai was posted to GameSetWatch in April.  There is a section on how the idea behind the Press Start Symphony of Games concert about.  The game designer says it happened as the result of five friends in the game industry having a drink together and talking about videogame music.

In case anyone didn't notice on the concert home page, the pre-order phase through e+ starts May 23, with general sales from May 30.

I'm still skeptical after the performance two years ago but might try to grab some tickets, to take part in the Japan STC party if nothing else. smile

Anyone who does get tix be sure to post!

If you will atend, please make a bootleg recording, Cedille! smile

Crystal Jul 30, 2009

So who's going this weekend?
Are you attending the afternoon concert or the evening concert?

So is the Japan STC party still in the works or has that been scrapped already?

I noticed the Eplus page yesterday. It looks like the concert's S-tickets didn't sell out.

Btw, according to the official website, some segments, like NES Medley and Fantasy Zone, will be different in afternoon and evening concerts.

xanadujin Aug 1, 2009

Sorry, I couldn't make it out to Tokyo that weekend.  Looking forward to hearing impressions of the concert though!

I just came back. A detailed review will be posted somewhere in the near future, but the first thing I must say is the Portal song sucked. I really hope the composer (Jonathan Coulton) didn't attend the concert and faced the terrible performance as he'd die (I'm hearing the original song in youtube, and it's pretty good). A shame is Koji Kondo was exclusive to the afternoon concert.

The encores were "At Zanarkand" and the Kirby medley.

Crystal Aug 2, 2009 (edited Aug 2, 2009)

There were cameras everywhere this time.
I counted six professional cameras, not just a camcorder.
4 on the sides, one in the back, one filming the front view of the conductor.

So I think it's most likely we'll see a DVD of this concert.

It's too bad they're not releasing the others though.

Nobuo grew out his hair. It's down to his shoulders.  He was wearing a bandanna on his head.

Today, 8/3 is Sakurai's Birthday, thus the encore was Kirby.

I don't know if I will have the luck to hear the Press Start 2009 bootleg as in 2006 and 2007 to confirm these information below, but as you, Crystal and Cedille attended the concert, could you clarify these doubts? I couldn’t confirm them in Japanese blogs.

- In Persona 4 Medley, was the battle theme "Reach Out To The Truth" performed without electric guitar?
- Nobuo Kurita is credited as the arranger of the medley of Mario. Could this be the same arrange of the Orchestral Game Concert 1?

- As in Fantasy Zone part in "Shooting Medley" in Press Start 2007, was Fantasy Zone Medley played with an electric bass?

Yep, the riff was replaced with the brass section. It's one of the best performances of the day. A far less boring and redudant "The Genesis".

Revoc wrote:

Not sure, but likely.

Revoc wrote:

Nope.

Revoc Aug 4, 2009

Thanks for clarifying, Cedille. I find very audacious "Reach Out To The Truth" without elec. guitar, mainly because Haruo Kubota played e. guitar in other segments.

And It's a shame that Fantasy Zone was played without electric bass...

Carl Aug 4, 2009 (edited Aug 4, 2009)

Wasn't the electric bass what contributed to the timing/delay problems in the other show?
I'd think it was a corrective measure.

I'd think it was a corrective measure.

But you mean that it would have electric bass in 2009 or are you referring to the 2007 concerts in Osaka and Yokohama?

Carl Aug 5, 2009

the 2007 version sounded bad because it was included, and since they removed it from 2009, it will probably be better now.
