So this game called Soma Bringer is about to come out for the DS soon, and Nintendo has finally decided to put out some videos for it a week ago or so. Mitsuda's the composer, and I really like what I'm hearing so far. Game looks great too, aside from the generic character designs and (from what I can gather from the short clips) story. Reminds me very much of Secret of Mana 2 & 3. Lots of clips can be found on youtube (works better for me than the ones on the official site):

Also, this is vaguely related to the topic, but since this game reminds me of Secret of Mana so much, has anyone heard/seen Kurikinton Fox performance of "Crisis" from SoM2 ? Awesome stuff smile

I was just checking Mitsuda's discography on GMR last night and found out about it.

Release date: 2008/04/02: http://www.gmronline.com/info.asp?CatNumber=SBPS-0012~4

The Celtic is definitely reminiscent of Mitsuda; almost sounded like he was re-using a track from Kirite; otherwise, it sounds like he's being taking lessons from Hitoshi Sakimoto.

I'm intrigued.

Game looks like it should be pretty cool, too.

Absolutely beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. I got the OST in the mail today and I'm loving every second of it.

Damn, how so early, man?! I have mine coming from Play-Asia. Based on the premium disc and samples, this is going to be in heavy rotation for a long time.

I've been a long time customer of CDJapan. Last time I ordered from them (Forest of Glass), I had it the day it was released in Japan. I guess they must love me.

Okay honestly... what I've heard from this soundtrack indicates that it could be a return to form for Mitsuda and hardly anyone is saying ANYTHING about it.  I can't even find good information on the first print version... there aren't even any on Yahoo! Japan auctions.

Talk more about this one, anyone who got it.  Purdy please?  sad

Haven't heard the soundtrack myself yet, but I got some Chrono Trigger vibes from samples. Could be just me though. Some nice tibbits:

-Mitsuda is actually playing the game himself and reporting his progress on his blog.
-This is the first "Original Soundtrack" from the Sleighbells label, meaning the music was recorded almost exactly as it is in the game. Mitsuda says this is because he likes the sound quality of the DS, and wants listeners to be able to re-experience the game's atmosphere.

I think we've all been waiting for Mitsuda to stop messin' around and bring out the stuff we love.

It's funny - my wife was just going through some of her old stuff and she found an old tape recorder/player.  She was listening to it and all of a sudden she found the ending theme to Chrono Trigger playing.  She rushed to tell me saying, "I told you I loved the game!  I remember recording this after I beat it the first time so I could learn it on the piano.  Isn't that crazy?"

Yes.  Yes, indeed it is crazy, and subsequently, I have the coolest wife evar.

It's funny you should mention VGM and tapes; I had a discussion about this with another fan and I personally can't recall a single instance where I recorded a piece of VGM to a tape - then again I didn't get serious about collecting or listening until way after CD's were the norm.

Oh, excellent!  I somehow missed that.  So that IS Eri Kawai's voice I heard in the sample.  Definitely am going to want to pick this one up... I seriously hope the game comes to the US too.

Also, can someone clarify for me... first print = red cardboard slipcase, later versions will be the blue cover in a jewel case?

Herrkotowski Apr 4, 2008

I believe that is correct Qui-Gon. In actuality, the first print is mostly cardboard with only jewel case inserts on the cardboard for the three discs. In addition, there is a ton of beautiful concept art on the cardboard inside covers. The booklet that comes with it seems to have comments about each track (presumably from Mitsuda, but I do not have a knowledge of Japanese).

As for me, I think my favorite tracks, although I absolutely love the entire soundtrack, are:

Village of Snow
Ordital, the Maneuvering City
Amaty Ruins - Seal
A Legend Sleeping in Ice Chains
Watching the Tower in the Sea of Flames
Exploration of the Secluded Land

Next week's SEMO MP3's will feature at least one of those, so if you don't have the soundtrack by then, feel free to check it out (those will go up late Sunday night USA Eastern Time)

I haven't cared all that much for Mitsuda's recent stuff, but Soma Bringer is a glimmer of hope proving that the man's still got it. While there's some filler, most of the material is consistently enjoyable. The overall vibe I get is a mix of Chrono Cross and Xenogears, with a little bit of Seiken Densetsu mixed in (Is Amaty Ruins similar to SD3's Obsession or what?). Not quite up to par with the high bar that is KiRite, but still a solid soundtrack. Gotta give props this time. Huge improvement over Armodyne, I'd say.

My package came in the mail today - actually, I picked it up at work and enjoyed the beautiful first-press box (which is snug; I had some difficulty pulling the digipak out of the slipcase) - and popped in the first disc on my way home. It's Mitsuda through and through and lordy, is it gorgeous!

My reaction: *_* and 0_0! It certainly doesn't sound like it came from the DS! This is the finest music I've ever heard programmed for the DS at this rate! Procyon Studio does have some really talented mixers and sound techs, there. Of course, Mitsuda being one of them according to the music credits makes it clear why the sound is so good.

And time and time again, I have to say that whoever's doing the packaging for Procyon Studio/Sleigh Bells' releases is fantastic! Having studied graphic design, I'm constantly amazed by the quality of the work that goes into the beautiful presentation. The warm Celtic-knotwork weave plus the lush concept art inside with the cooler colors really sets it off. Wonderful. I see he's carried over the booklet being tucked into the open sleeve from KiRite. (Good place to put the obi, too).

Favorite songs so far:

The One Who Soars Over the World
Ring
Junel, The Large Forest
Threatening Yell (if this is the battle theme, this is one of his best)
Schildkrote
Green Wind
Tender Flow
Amaty, the Ancient City
Confronting the Defense Master (is this another battle theme? Boss battle, possibly?)
Alertia
A Legend Sleeping in Ice Chains (this one is very Chrono Trigger-like)
Bonfire in One Hand
Relic of Ancient Times

I got my copy a few days ago and just started to listen to it.  I am loving what I'm hearing and have a feeling that it will be on my ipod for a long time just like Chrono Cross.  I loved the packaging but my only complaint is that they don't publish the liner notes in english as well.  It doesn't have to be in the booklet but it would be nice if somebody would include them as a separate sheet of paper.

I also wish that Cocoebiz would update his english website more often and include the stuff on the japanese site in the updates.

Cheers,

David

Yes.  I just finished listening to this one, and it's absoluetly fantastic.  Those who love Mitsuda for CT, XG, and CC will not be disappointed.  Buy now.

I'd like to take the chance to bump this thread by telling you all what a GOOFBALL I am. :S

I had bought this soundtrack purely on word-of-mouth and the few select samples that have been posted. I was certainly looking forward to hearing more Mitsuda. So when I got the album, my first impressions upon a quick listen were extremely positive, and I knew I'd listen to it more in depth in time.

And then...it vanished. Missing! Where on Earth did I put it?!?

Well, yesterday I decided I needed to take out off the CDs in my car. (Yeah, I should have maybe done something about all the JUNK in there, too, but...priorities! wink) I have a bad habit of taking a CD out of its case, taking out the CD that's in the player, putting in the new CD, and sticking the previous disc in the other case. Needless to say, after several changes, the quantity of misplacements really build up. tongue

So...after shifting a pile of stuff to look for all the CDs I can find, I look at the floorboard in the back seat...and there's Soma Bringer.

D'OH!!!

Well, at least it wasn't crushed or anything.

So now I'm FINALLY giving this album the fair hearing it deserves, now that I've actually FOUND it again. smile
And I have to say...I'm absolutely CHARMED by what I'm hearing.
