...and no, I'm not talking about Chronotorioustongue

As a relative newcomer to the game music scene, I'm still trying to get the classics in my collection.  Today I was looking for the best place to find the Chrono Trigger Original Sound Version (and not the 1999 Playstation print, thank you), when I discovered that a new reprint had been put out by Squaresoft this summer.

I know you can't really go wrong with Chrono Trigger, but I'd like to get the best possible version of the soundtrack.  My question is: is there a difference between the original OSV and the new reprint, in sound quality or anything else?  Is it truly the exact same soundtrack, but with the bonus tracks included?  Because if so, I see no reason to get the original OSV.  However, if there is any kind of change from the glorious SNES sound of the original, I don't think I'll get the Square reprint.  Anyone who has listened to the new version, please let me know.  Thanks!

The second one is even a remastered version of the DS soundtrack that was already different from SNES. So the answer is obvious.

Cedille, your response is a bit hard to follow (for me, anyway).

There is another thread for the DS soundtrack but yeah, we never got a real, final answer here whether the music is from the SNES version or the DS version, and if the latter, how it compares.  Can someone who has the soundtrack report? smile

I didn't read the thread at all, but the other day I visited Yasunori Mitsuda's official forum and found this quote.

DS版クロノ・トリガーのサントラはDS版をそのまま
録音したのではなく更に音質向上をさせる為、
(DSのままでも十分なんですが・・・^^;)
一から調整されています。
僕も、一から監修をさせてもらいました。

(rough translation of the needed point: The soundtrack of DS Chrono Trigger was not a straightforward recording of the DS sound and was thoroughly optimized for better quality)

Sounds identical to the SNES version to me. I have both, so...yeah. Can't tell a difference.

Doesn't sound like how it would on the DS (there's a slight downgrade in quality there, in the game, IMO).

Yes, there is a slight downgrade from the SNES version to the DS version.  That's why I wasn't sure if this was the true definitive version of the Chrono Trigger soundtrack, or if the original OSV was.  According to the RPGFan review:

"Is the music any different because this is the soundtrack to the DS port of an SNES game? Nope, it's the exact same. There are some bonus tracks tacked on that were arranged by Tsuyoshi Sekito for the PlayStation version (and released on a one-disc print of the OST in 1999). So, yes, this is a more complete printing."

They claim that it's exactly the same, but there's nothing that explicitly states that it's the same sound files with more added, so I just wanted to be sure.  Thanks!
