Well, I'm not a big fan of Sony, but I have to admit there are some great games on the PSP and I find it annoying that they're not being released on any other system!  So, I'm thinking about possibly getting a PSP at some point.  What are people's thoughts about the PSP?  Those who have one, or have played one, or had one, what are your thoughts and impressions?  Worth the money?

cheers,

I used to like my PSP when I was playing Lumines and Maverick Hunter X, but nothing else was really that awesome for me. I ended up selling it to a buddy for a low price and I don't regret that one bit. Once I got my DS, my PSP became a little plastic corpse.

It really depends on what you plan on doing with it.

I have two PSPs. :( A black one with 1.50 firmware for playing SNES games shoddily, haha (and whatever other homebrew you could ever want), and a white one with the latest firmware for playing actual UMDs.  I... kinda bought a PSP just for Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, and it's definitely delivered there.

If you like NIS shovelware strategy RPGs with long load times, also get a PSP. ;)

At this point, I'd wait for the inevitable revision. The thing really needs it, from what I've handled. The size is impressive, but the controls aren't (and I'm not sure if the load times for the store demos are because of abuse the units have taken or if they're what the actual games have...Every game I've gone to try loads for close to 30 seconds and I normally walk away before it finishes).

Library's improving, but still lacks that killer app (okay, VP would qualify, but not for someone who already played the cover off the original...And Lumines is coming for PS2). I can see myself getting one once it becomes more of a "value" item to play a couple odds and ends, but I wouldn't use it much with my DS around.

I second that.  I own two PSP games now and will be getting at least one more, so I do plan to get one eventually, but the new $250 "value" pack is total horse shit.  I'm really hoping that the revision will be here in the first half of next year, hopefully in time for the new Metal Gear, but who knows.

Short answer: no.

Better answer: I don't DISLIKE it, but that's only because I essentially got mine free signing up for the internet in Japan.  It so wouldn't have been worth it otherwise just to play Bandai's bastardization of the Legend of Heroes titles and the extremely overrated Lumines.  Mine's collecting dust waiting for Gurumin, the only thing I can see coming for it that interests me in any way at all.

Ryu Oct 24, 2006

Yeah, I got Lumines Live from XBLA and I can't really get why this game is so great---*sigh*  However, the DC-version of Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo that's coming to PSP makes that piece of shit portable system look somewhat intriguing.

Other than it, and since the Powerstone Collection got bad press, the only other game that interested me was Field Commander---so the PSP just doesn't seem worth it to me.

Hm, I wonder if Capcom is going to support XBLA; I'd love to get SPF2T and Powerstone on it---I'd probably get a Gold subscription for those two.

I like my PSP because my iPod broke and I'm too lazy to get a new one...oh wait, you can play games on it?

Jay Oct 24, 2006

Where did the Powerstone Collection get bad press? I've got it and it's excellent. Do I like my PSP? Of course. Yep, it goes through extended periods of gathering dust but no more than any other machine. In spite of the desired perception, there are large amounts of excellent games for it.

But it's a handheld machine and if that holds no value to you then you're better off just letting it pass you by.

I'm in the 'waiting for the revision' camp myself.  But I really did want to pick up a PSP last month, mostly for LocoRoco, but also for the upcoming Gitaroo Man Lives! next month, and possibly MGS: Portable Ops in December.  I'm still curious about Silent Hill: Origins, and now with that Parodius Collection coming soon, I'm thinking of jumping the gun, and just picking up the current model.

I'd also like to check out the Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill Digital Graphic Novels.  Anybody have opinions on them?

Jay Oct 24, 2006

Haven't tried the MGS one but the Silent Hill Experience thing is a bit crappy. It's really like a sort of dvd extras thing with some promotion for the movie. Would be a nice freebie but not worth paying for.

Oh, I don't follow PSP news all that well, but I happened across an article that said it had bad controls.  However, it's good news that it works for you---I'll give it a shot on a friend's system, assuming he keeps the thing, and that might mean there are again three titles for it that interests me.

Capcom has released one XBLA game so far (SF2T), and it sold pretty well despite the lag, so I would assume they'll do more, though remember that MSFT is being pretty picky about what goes up on XBLA since they want to make new XBLA games special by only having one new one per week.

Ryu Oct 24, 2006

I forgot about SF2T, oops.  This one-a-week policy (broken last week with Lumines Live and UMK3) is ridiculous.  Still, online SPF2T was done on the DC in Japan only, I think.  That's the version (that's also coming to PSP) that should make it to XBLA.  A shame Capcom's updated website has no contact information so I could at least make the request.

UMK3 was a mistake, I think.  It was supposed to be this week's game.

Apparently MGSPO is coming to America a good deal sooner than I expected (perhaps even this year), so I guess that'll be my third PSP game with no system.  Oh well.
