Any word on an OST release?

SonicPanda Nov 29, 2006

Found a page putting it at 3675 Yen on December 13th.

Ramza Nov 29, 2006

OST info has been on gmronline.com for ... I don't know ... a month? two months? Play Asia, CD Japan, VGMWorld all have them listed. The two singles for the game have already been released, and yeah, OST Dec. 13th.

...and still no more samples online?

I wasn't convinced by what I've heard so far... but I haven't heard that much. wink

You can listen to some music here:

Very weird vocals... I think that will alienate non Japanese gamers.
The in-game music is much better. (BD_music_003 and 002)
And don't I remember music_002 from somewhere else?

Thanks a bunch for the info. I guess I didn't think to search some of the sites for it since I didn't see anyone really discussing it.

I'm starting to listen to the OST now... it's a good impression so far.
I hated Eternity, but "The Earth Shark Is Coming!" is probably Uematsu's best boss theme since FF8.
It seems the tracks don't even loop once though, which sucks.

Edit: Just finished listening to it... it's pretty great overall, I think around the same level as FF9, definitely a 9.5/10.
I love tracks like Giant Mechat, which reminds me of FF7's JENOVA in a way.
The final battle tracks (I presume them to be Revival Of The *Spoilers*, and Release The Seal), are VERY epic and energetic with lots of great guitar play and chorals, but I don't think they're as good as some of Uematsu's best final battle themes. (They do remind me of Dancing Mad in a way though)
I think it's weird how there's only one character theme (Zola's Theme), since Uematsu was always great at those... and the one theme isn't that great either.
But yeah, overall the OST is by and far a great work, on the same level as Uematsu's best.

Comparing it to FF9 revives my interest. If only my 56k Modem played those samples! sad

This soundtrack (except the vocals) is pretty good on first listen.  It's filled with about half classic Uematsu Final Fantasy style arrangements and about half Black Mages style synth-rock arrangements.  It's a pretty good balance and it works well, I'm not a big fan of the whole synth-rock thing but this is Uematsu's best work in a long time... not that that's saying much anyway =p.

I just got the OST and I'm actually enjoying it. It's very charming, and I'm glad there's a lot of tracks that are with live instruments. It adds A LOT. The one song people seem to be having an issue over, Eternity, is not a bad song, it's just that the lyrics and vocalist is, um, not really right for this. I've only listened once, but will definitely be listening more.

I've listened to the CD set several times, and I'm quite impressed.  It makes me remember why I once liked Uematsu so much!  The (presumably) final battle track ROCKS.

"Eternity" sounds like bad karaoke. I just picture some fat dude in an Iron Maiden shirt trying to relive his heyday of when he was a singer in a metal cover band that used to play shows in high school auditoriums located within a 10 mile radius of his parents' basement. Bad vox, man. Bad vox.

Wasn't Deep Purple one of the groups that originally inspired Iron Maiden? Not sure their vocalist would be wearing a shirt for a band they helped inspire...

It's considerably more understandable than "Otherworld" at least. The awkward flow is probably the result of the words being written in Japanese, transferred to English, then sung by an outside singer. I thought it sounded a bit unnatural the first couple times before I warmed up to it and Gillan's vocals. Now I think it's it probably the best vocal song Uematsu has come up with. Now "Bad But Bat"...I eat that type of music for breakfast, but the vocalist completely slaughtered that one. Shame, since the instrumental wasn't that bad.

As for the rest of the OST...There are a couple spots that are unmistakably Uematsu in traditional FF-mode, but the heavy rock usage really gives it more of a fresh sound than anything he's done in ages. Easily his most inspired work since FFVI, though I doubt it will have the same type of universal appeal among fans. As is, I probably have it right behind Atelier Iris: Grand Fantasm as my second-favorite OST released this year.

God, this almost makes me go "what the hell?"

Where DID this come from? All that time off must have done him good because damn, this is -- well the best word is SUWEEEEEET.

"Ancient Stronghold"???

Nobby, where the hell did this come from?! Goooooood stuff!

Vainamoinen Jan 5, 2007 (edited Jan 5, 2007)

I almost didn't believe it. Now I'm about 14 times through the album, and I consider it to be incredibly good. "Classic" Uematsu plus more real Orchestra plus "Black Mages" Intermezzi. What could I want more, besides four CDs instead of two?

Until my ears bleed... wink

p.s. Has anyone yet done / found a translation of the liner notes?!

I want to agree with this, but one of the big draws for Blue Dragon (to me anyway) is that Uematsu seemed much more focused than he was with his 4-CD OST's...The amount of filler on the OST is refreshingly low compared to them. Same reason FFVI sticks out, since it's one of the few RPG soundtracks where everything feels important.

I agree...4-CD's of the same quality material from the OST out now would be killer, just not 4-CD's, with FF8/9-style filler tracks.

You have to wonder though; did Uematsu become good when he stopped arranging his own work? So far, over the past 2 years, he hasn't really arranged anything (aside maybe a handful of themes) of his own.

Moses Jan 6, 2007

"Over the past 2 years"? More like "ever". What's your point?

Geez, why are you getting all defensive? My point was fairly clear in my last post: Uematsu has recently become better because he doesn't arrange his own stuff anymore. (and anything he has arranged over the past few years (majority of Hanjuku Hero 4) has been less than impressive).

I think it shows he's a capable composer (look at FF works from FFI-FFVII, which, due to sound limitations, didn't require a huge amount of arranging in order to sound good), but maybe the reason why he's 'lost some steam' from FFIX (or arguably FFVIII) onwards is that he can't arrange his ideas in a 'satisfactory' way.
