This might be old news, but I just found out:

http://www.tombraider.com/anniversary/index.html

Honestly, I'm looking forward to the game smile
I was a fan of the first one, even though I never beat it (it was quite the challenge)!  Hopefully this time there will be a full soundtrack released.  In my opinion, the original Tomb Raider had one of the best soundtracks that was never released.

cheers,

Yeah dude, I saw that in the latest GI and got fired up! I always loved the first Tomb Raider, and the newest one was pretty cool, too. Put the two together and you'll have yourself a good action game! I'm looking forward to this one.

I don't mean this to be sarcastic in the least, but...There was music in Tomb Raider 1? I know it's been ages since I last played it, but I don't recall anything playing in the background.

I've been half-tempted to see if the newer game was any good (never liked the clunky controls in the older ones). I know the developer who made Angel of Darkness caught hell from the publisher because it got lackluster reviews.

Only really cool TR moment I remember was the first underwater area in the first one. I drowned about 20 times, but it was really cool nonetheless.

Yep, easily the best music in the series. Very majestic and really added to the impressive scale of everything.

I think you can listen to the original TR soundtrack by simply popping the CD in a CD player. Beautiful stuff...

Wow. I've always wanted to see the environments of TR1 get an upgrade. I do think that TR2 had a better soundtrack, though.

It seems, that in the trailer, they showed upgraded parts of level 1 and 3. I recognized the part where you had to find 3 cogs (anyone that looked for those will never forget it).

Amazingu Jan 8, 2007

Definitely psyched about this one.
Although I never cared about any Tomb Raider after 2, the first 2 games rank as some of my favorite games of all time, and indeed, they both had great music.

Now, PLEASE do a remake of 2 as well, that would rock my world!

Zane Jun 6, 2007 (edited Jun 6, 2007)

I just picked this up today... and hot damn, it is EXACTLY what I expected. I made it through the first three levels so far, and it is a Legends-style of gameplay with totally revamped TR levels. Things are very familiar but not exactly the same. It's a little overwhelming because things are different; for example, they took out the giant pool with the bear at the end of the City of Vilcabamba, and the T-Rex scene is a little longer in the Lost Valley.

A couple of iffy things: control seems shaky at first (a little too sensitive until I got used to it), and the camera acts up in close quarters. Other than that, I have no complaints. This game is a lot of fun, and if you liked Legends and the original TR, you would be a fool not to check it out.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, when there's music it's mostly new and faithful arranges of the old stuff. AWESOME tunes and ambience!

Yes, you can - when you buy the PS1 game you also *techincally* buy the soundtrack. TR1 has awesome tunes...

Edit:

You can also listen to all the voice clips as well, there are even a few songs and voice clips that aren't in the game.

Here's hopin' the Wii build comes along nicely.

Great to hear.  I'll be picking up the game over the weekend, and I can't wait to check it out.  It's been ages since I've played the original, so I'm not liable to pick up on the more detailed changes.  I will welcome the supposedly more nimble controls carried over from Legends, as I doubt I could ever play with the original's play mechanics ever again.

Zane, are you playing the PC or PS2 version?  I've heard the game looks and moves absolutely gorgeous on a souped-up PC.  That's neither here or there for me, so I'm opting for the PS2 version.

Amazingu Jun 7, 2007

Man, I want this so bad!
Does anyone know anything about a possible Japanese release?

Jay Jun 7, 2007

Apparently it's coming out on 360, as downloadable content for Legends.

I'm rockin' the PS2 version. It looks just fine on the PS2, but the PC screenshots look better.

I think it's going to be downloadable on its own from the XBL Marketplace. If you check out this article, it seems a little more clear (according to the ESRB database) that it's going to be an episodic game.

This rules for 360 owners, because you won't need the TRL game to get the content! Although, that game is so good it won't hurt. wink

Angela Jun 8, 2007

Picked up the game today, and although I've only just made it to The Lost Valley, it's made one hell of an impression so far.  The graphics are gorgeous, with attention to detail in Croft Manor and the snowcapped mountains of Peru particularly stunning.  Lara's a dream to control; I was able to jump right in, and start leaping, swinging, grappling and shimmying from ledge to ledge in no time flat. The TR play mechanics of yesteryear is but a distant memory; the "Legend" controls just makes playing these games a whole lot of fun now.

My only qualm is with the camera.  Yeah, it does tend to keep to the close quarters almost all the time - in combat, in particular, it zooms in so that it's hard to see what you're shooting at if the enemy comes straight up toward you.

So far, so very good.  The game already feels like it's worth the $30 I paid..... and I might go so far as to say it should've retailed for even higher.  $40, even.

But are you able to swim? Legend's swimming controls were atrocious and there is much more swimming in the first TR.

It's fairly similar to Legend, but I haven't had any trouble. O descends and X ascends, and apparently triangle makes her swim faster, but I can't tell the difference.

I made it to the halfway point in Midas's level last night, and I have a few little complaints about the progression. First, The Coliseum was the worst part of the game; there's a good chance that after you open the door with the Balcony Key you will want to shoot yourself. And there are points where I will do some platforming, hit a checkpoint, and then fall down... and on my way back to the platforming section I will hit another checkpoint, so if I die I have to do it all over again. It seems that there are checkpoint "areas" to get through instead of just single checkpoints.

My recommendation? If you go through a real tough segment and you hear that checkpoint chime, save your game. Then, if you fall and get pushed back to an older checkpoint you can just reload your game and save the hassle of going through the segments again. Although, aside from that Coliseum balcony part (grapple to grapple to pillar, btw) the platforming parts have been a treat.

So, yeah. I'm still fired up about this game and am having a great time with it. $30 is a steal.

PS: Checkpoint, checkpoint, checkpoint.

I've noticed this as well.  I wish they gave you an option to either start at your last checkpoint or load your last save whenever you die, instead of automatically putting you back at your last checkpoint.  A quick load option would've been nice, too -- the load times aren't terribly bad, and I can understand the data that needs to be loaded for such vast environments - but making that fatal jump over and over again, and getting thrown back to the load screen each time can get irritating.

And this is a small but neat feature they added that wasn't in Legend, but holding R2 while pressing on the analog stick, no matter how hard, will restrict Lara to walk only.   I found that to be quite helpful on a number of tight-spaced, height-centric places.

Well details of Anniversary on 360 have come out. It will be episodic. It will need Legends (makes sense as I think it uses a lot of the same assets). The first part will be out in September and to get the whole thing will cost 2400 points (EUR 27.91 / USD 29.99).

Amazingu Jun 19, 2007

Hmmm. I have legend, but I don't have X-box Live (I have the core version 360 and no Hard Drive), so I'll just have to get that retail version then, which is PERFECTLY fine with me. Woohoo!

I don't see why anyone would want to pay the same amount for a download as for the physical game itself. Granted a download doesn't take up any room, but it has NO resell value whatsoever! Furthermore, if you have to have Legends, then you're actually spending about twice the money just to get the Anniversary edition. Seems like a greedy and stupid decision by Eidos or whoever is in charge...

Jay Jun 19, 2007

It makes a bit of sense if you have Legends anyway.

Resell value seems to be to be exactly what companies will be trying to cut out. I don't know at all but, for all the talk of losing money due to piracy, I'd say they lose way more in the second hand games market. People are paying money for games and the profit goes straight to the retailer, not the developers or publishers.

So, while I agree with you on the physical boxed and all version being very attractive - I know I'd far rather have a boxed game, I can see games going like this more and more.
