Is it me or does this show a deep misunderstanding of their own IP? Set in the world of SH2, this looks like a piss poor shooter. There are pics somewhere but I can't find them now. There's one of Pyramid Head, one with some nurses and one with some other new creature that looks completely pants.

Not a good sign for SH5 in my opinion.

WTF? O_o

If someone sees the pics, please post. I have to see this garbage (gar-bahhhj).

In one fell swoop, Konami is

1)ripping off House of the Dead
2)destorying the Silent Hill mythos

way to go Konami...

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that Konami has completely lost track of what Silent Hill is.  Between this arcade game and farming out the PSP title to a foreign developer who apparently has made an absolutely atrociously bad game, I find myself missing the time when I looked forward to things with the SH name.

Amazingu Feb 16, 2007

I WAS kinda curious about that PSP title, then I saw how it ripped off RE4, and I didn't want anything to do with it anymore.
Still, I'm kinda relieved to hear it was done by a different developer.

Let Konami have a little fun with the franchise; after all, they are the guys behind Parodius.

That being said, yeah, it does make you worry what's going to happen with SH5.  I'm guessing they are looking at the success RE4 brought that series and are afraid that they may need to follow suit.

I don't see how that would be a bad thing.  The Silent Hill series has even worse control than the Resident Evil series.  RE4 fixed the RE series.  Let's have Konami fix the SH series.

I can agree with that; I'm just saying that one can worry about how they go about doing that.  We, Capcom and the fans, got lucky with RE4 being as good as it was.

SH is not RE. And RE4 didn't just fix the control. It changed the entire game. Now RE needed a good kick in the ass and RE4 gave it that. And one could argue that SH does too. But the two series are so entirely different that kicking in the same direction, while great for RE, would kill everything that SH had going for it.

Going down RE4's action shooter road won't fix SH. It will break it.

Edit: And here's more courtesy of a bad Google translation (has more pics though) - http://translate.google.com/translate?u … en&ie=UTF8

The other images really just back up my thoughts on it. The new creatures and the new human characters have absolutely none of that SH style. It's completely gone. It does indeed look very like House of the Dead.

Dragon God Feb 17, 2007

Hey guys, has it ever occured to any of you that this was likely not developped by Team Silent but rather by Konami's Arcade department ?

Seriously, this is a coin-op game and will likely never make its way out here due to Arcades over here being FREAKING DEAD !

I'm just quite annoyed at the bitching I see everywhere on the net. You people are really "jumping the gun" way too soon.  Let's wait to see the game in action first, shall we ?

I'm quite sure this is just a small side project to tide over fans in Japan until SH5 gets done.

For God's sake, people, get a grip !

Jay Feb 17, 2007

Doesn't really matter which arm of Konami made it or even if they farmed it out completely. Also doesn't matter if it only comes out in Japan. And, to be honest, it doesn't matter if it's a bloody brilliant shooter either.

What matters is their perception that Silent Hill is the right IP for this sort of game.

I'm not saying they have to turn the series into an action game like RE4.  I'm just saying they need to fix the bloody control.  No reason why it still can't be slow-paced and atmospheric just because you have control of your character.

Jay Feb 17, 2007

Ah, okay. Yep you're right.

If you read the context of your posts with the two above it, you'll probably see how I thought turning it into RE4 was what you were proposing. Seems I was wrong!

I wish the arcade scene was still kickin' enough to afford us Afterburner Climax.   Damn, that looks like some awesome shit.... If I had the funds and the space, I'd actually import the machine.  The Climax cabinet edition, of course.

XISMZERO Feb 20, 2007

I can agree arcade shooting is someplace Konami didn't need to direct Silent Hill - because it's *not* as silly as the Resident Evil concept sans story elements. But is anyone surprised? Is anyone surprised they are still making Evangelion products? The Evangelion detective game anyone? Rei Ayanami in a beach bikini?

I think they were trying to do a few things here; promote the movie and attract audiences (that they didn't get with the movie) that haven't gotten hit or wouldn't typically be interested by the Silent Hill series. Looks like a silly, lighthearted piece of memorabilia not to be taken seriously. It's just an opportunity to cash cow like these companies are familiar with
putting their franchises through.

Speaking about slow-paced "survival horrors" (they sure dont call em that anymore - so late 1990s); they could be changing the face of it again with RE5. I mean, the lead role seems to be doing the exact opposite: running from zombified creatures! RE4 has opened the gate for new possibilites outside all the cliched backdrops. Daylight and running could be an interesting direction for a future survival-h; the polar opposite of what RE displayed over ten years ago!

It appears first-person is the new way for the genre though with the Wii and future plans for SH are concerned...

They've got four new movies of Evangelion starting the end of this year, I believe, re-telling it but with differences throughout and a different ending.

You have no idea.  There's a UFO catcher area in an arcade in Akihabara where an entire half of the place is dedicated to trying to grab scantily clad Rei and... the red haired one figures.  I'm occasionally quite relieved I'm leaving here in the summer.  tongue
