ugh... yeah, I'd really wish Square-Enix would E  X  P  A  N  D on some of the older 32-bit games it made instead of making remakes of all these games we've technically played already.

I disagree with you, Ashely. Would you really like to see them Final Fantasize something as singularly grand as Vagrant Story? I'll admit that Xenogears is in desperate need of a revamping, but every other property that was gold on 32-bit should probably be left alone.

I can't for the life of me figure out why people are so pissed about this. The first game was middling at best and the second game was a piece of crap.

games like PE depend on ATMOSPHERE,, that cannot be created on a little dinky cell phone screen...

Next up: Silent Hill on the Game.com!

Yeah, this kind of sucks. The mobile phone market is huge, so this makes sense from a business perspective at least. Guess Before Crisis is doing (did?) okay then. On the other hand, for a series introduced as a 'cinematic RPG' it's kind of a strange choice of platform.
I never played part 2, but really liked the first one for its unconventional setting and great Shimomura music. Weapon customization was lots of fun too.

By "expanding" I don't mean remakes, I mean a full ledged sequels or prequels... make one outing per system/generation like they did with Star Ocean (well, before the PSP remakes were revealed) or pre-Cube Metroid. Doing it this way it doesn't look like you milking a cash cow.

FF cash cow goes "Kweh!"

And I wonder, are mobile phone games popular? I don't know a single person who plays them! And as for PE (the first game), I thought it had a cool storyline but the battles were so poorly rendered, frustrating, and boring that I simply could not push myself to finish it.  It could be a great game if revamped.

I assume they are in Japan. They've got quite a bit of experience in the area too: http://www.square-enix.com/jp/mobile/i/
If anything, it's a nice way for them to find out if people are still interested in the franchise. The thing that surprises me most about the anouncement is that they're calling it part 3 (as in, it's part of the main series) in stead of parasite eve gaiden or something.

Ehem.

I would consider that the opposite, Vagrant Story-izing a Final Fantasy.  Which it is in all the right ways (story, world design) and not in all the wrong ways (I have yet to have a boss take five hours to die while I do .00005 damage with each hit because I didn't have the clairvoyance to know what kind of weapon to customize by hitting a dummy 6500 times in a row).

That sounds like a personal problem. tongue

All kidding aside, yeah, Vagrant Story had more than its fair share of flaws, but I felt that the good parts of the game far, far, far overshone any of its bad points. Just a personal opinion.

Gonna have to disagree here.  The first game was amazingly good.  The second game was a huge disappointment since Square foolishly implemented the awful RE control scheme.  In spite of that, I got pretty far into the second one, but my monitor died when I was in the middle and by the time I replaced it with a TV, I had already moved on to other stuff.

longhairmike May 20, 2007

granted PE2 wasnt like the first one, but i thought it was awesome. Until Silent hill i had never used a map so much in a game. even thought the game was hard as hell, the tension it created as you had to sneak around with scarce ammo was what made it worth the money. If you didnt get to the 2nd half of the game, then you only played the easy parts...

Wanderer May 20, 2007

What made the first game impressive at the time were the pretty CG sequences. I remember finding the story incomprehensible and the gameplay was... wierd. Hard to say how it would hold up to a replay.

The second game is really only remembered these days for the infamous shower sequence. wink

it had replay value, i had to play thru the game 3 times before my weapon (ASSKICKR) and armor (NARDGARD) were built up enough to beat the chrystler building.  after 13 times thru the game when your attack and defense are above 500, even the bosses are one-hit kills and the only way to take damage is by headbutting the ultimate being... but now i could whip thru the game in 3 hours if i wanted to enjoy the story again..

Ashley Winchester May 21, 2007

I'm so horrible at the original Parasite Eve, I know I beat it on my first attempt but after that I never beat it again. At this point I'm just really unsure how to use tools on weapons and armor to my advantage - it probably so damn easy but it's been so long.

TerraEpon May 21, 2007

I loved the first game, but I also sucked at it. Odd someone made a comment about Vagrant Story, as something similar applies here -- if you mess up by selling/not getting/etc this or that you can't really recover.

If just that issue were fixed, it'd be a masterpiecidic (woo new word) game.

Parasite Eve was actually my first PS1 SE RPG.  Can't say I started out bad!

PE2 was in every way inferior to the first one.  I'm reminded of the argument that Naoshi Mizuta's compositions are broad and in no way sound the same.  What!?  Every track from this game gets a big fat "MEH" except for the final boss theme.

A port of PE1 to the PSP is desperately needed.
