Yes, I'll be picking up Simpsons Season 10.  I'll freely admit that the show was starting to begin its slippery decline at this point, but I remember loving quite a few of these episodes, like "Lisa Get An A" (she gets hooked on Crash Bandicoot!), "Mayored To The Mob" (Mark Hamill's cameo), "Viva Ned Flanders" (the Vegas wives), "I'm With Cupid" (Apu's valentine's day gift extravagenza), "Maximum Overdrive" (worth it just to see Homer truckin' it to Spice Girls music), and -- one of my all-time favorite episodes -- "Mom And Pop Art," where the Simpsons meets the art world.

Like last time, I'll be picking up the import Gyakuten Saiban 3 DS, along with the domestic release in October.  Back when the first Phoenix Wright was released in 2005, I never thought we'd see the day when we'd finally be able to play GS3 in complete English.  I commend Capcom for the fast turnabout time (see what I did there?) in bringing these fantastic games over.

I might save Metroid Prime 3: Corruption for the fall season, but as long as Brain Age 2 holds its $19.99 retail price, it's a definite first-day pick up.  By the way, was anyone considering picking up the new Brain Age 2 DS Lite Bundle?  I would've preferred the DS to be all red, but the dual-tone looks kinda neat.

Wild Arms 5 is listed for late August but I really doubt I'll buy it when it comes out... I'll probably wait a few months until the price goes down. The last four games I ran out and bought at EB for full price on release day (Valkarie Profile 2, FFXII, Wild Arms Alter code:F, and Wild Arms 4) I no longer own or am looking to get rid of. Not really a good track record. Out of those four I thought VP2 was the strongest but it wasn't a keeper.

I am somewhat eager to see what WA5 brings considering it's the 10th Anniversary game. Still, I really haven't been infatuated with the game in the series since WA1 & 2 on the PS1.

I'm thinking about importing FFXII International "Zodiac Job System" as a gift for my big brother. He *adored* FFXII but he was disappointed that, ultimately, every character was the same. It was just like the Grid Sphere of FFX, except this time you all started at the same place. With Zodiac Job System, they're promising more exclusive abilities for different characters and some forced exclusives of old abilities (i.e. - perhaps only Ashe can have high-level white magic etc). I think he might be into it.

In other news, good call Angela on the Phoenix Wright props. I'm hoping Capcom brings Kabu Trader Shun to the US, complete with some other witty English title.

I'd pick up Simpsons Season 10 because it also contains Phil Hartman's last appearance, however, I'm not entirely sure I'll get it or South Park Season 10 until I get a much better deal.  I waited on Simpsons season 9 until it was $20, and South Park season 9 until it was around $27.99.  If I find either for around $25, then I'll get it.  Otherwise, I'm waiting.

I considered picking up Heroes Season 1, since I've heard good things and I want to catch up before the season starts.  Anyone here watched that show and give me anything, good or bad?

I'll probably pick up Dr Strange and the Aqua Teen movie too, if only because I can't stop my OCD issues with fanboyish collecting of some things.  The other thing I considered getting was Disturbia, but I am not so sure.  Depends on if I feel like splurging at the time.

Gamewise, I'm going to replay Metroid Prime, then play Metroid Prime 2, and at that point decide if I even care about Metroid Prime 3.  I'll rent Lair PS3 and Dynasty Warriors Gundam 360; I don't even think either has a chance of being bought.

Of anything, what I really want is for Capcom to announce that Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is finally ready for release on XBLA or PSN.

Slow month... not that I'm complaining as it is helping me slaughter my back-catalog, including finally giving me a reason to play MP2 for the first time.

That's odd. I didn't have you pegged as someone who'd even remotely enjoy Gundam in any form. Any reason why this game interests you enough to rent it? Also, tell me your thoughts. It may actually end up being the catalyst for a purchase decision regarding the PS3.

I enjoyed Gundam Wing.  That's about the only Gundam I've ever seen.  And I've DLed the demo... for the PS3, only because it was available there before it was on the 360; I'm going to rent it for the 360.  Gotta get those achievement points!

I only pick up domestic releases (with the exception of soundtracks). I can't read Japanese, so I see no reason to acquire imports (although every now and then I really want one -such as Radiant Silvergun & Sin and Punishment, why those were never released domestically I have no idea). However, I am curious as to how many imports you (and other folks around here) have? Also, do you own more than one of the same system? That's too expensive for me, but hey more power to you smile

As far as the DS is concerned, all regions' consoles can play all other regions' games, so there's no lockout or need to have more than one of the systems. That was an awesome decision on Nintendo's behalf.

Jay Aug 1, 2007

Well GS3 has an English option apparently so language wouldn't be a problem.

I import a lot of games but then I'm in the Euro zone and we frequently get shafted with both release dates and prices. So I have a large number of US imports and a smaller, though still significant, number of JP imports.

I gave up importing any games with language issues a few years ago. So no Japanese RPGS. Can't see the point if I don't understand it, even though I did muddle though the Japanese version of Pokemon Silver back in the day. But there are loads of games that make it to Japan first with no major language issues (the Streetfighter games going back a bit for example - most of which I own in both English and Japanese, SFZ3 many times over). Then there are others (like Ouendan) that can be played easily with no language issues, will never be translated and are too much fun to miss out on.

Oh, I have a whole rake of JP Saturn games too for some reason. Well, many of them are the Capcom fighters that weren't released elsewhere.

All portables have been like this. I can't think of any that had regional lockout.

Jay, do you get ripped off getting games from the US?  If ever you need help getting your hands on a US release, let me know.  I won't charge any 'handling' fees or mark up either.

Another light month, at least in these categories.

Let's say this were August of 3007. I'd pick up the following new releases:

Of course, firstly, I should point out that 'picking up' has a very different meaning now. There really isn't anything to pick up anymore. All electronics have been installed in humans since the late 2300s. If you want to watch a movie, you look at a wall. Any wall will do these days, but you know, it wasn't always that way. It took a while to get every surface activated. And even if you're stuck out in the woods, just close your eyes; all babies have their vitreous humor replaced with liquid displays. Gosh, it's been that way for half a millennium now. Of course, we don't die anymore (unless you want to!), so I was around when they started doing it. But about these new releases, let me tell you. The movies we watch are all quite old (and require subtitles), but games are still being made....

  Rygar

This is a solid purchase from what I've read. It requires a large deposit, but the monthly installment is reasonable. The weapon takes some getting used to, but it's mainly psychological. It seems logical to fear the return of the weapon but it will never harm you. The demo was mighty bloody and sometimes body parts will hit you, but there are plenty of streams to jump into and wash off.

  Final Fantasy Planet

One could easily spend several millennia here, since you have to actually kill every enemy by hand to get your experience points. Well, no one has gotten any magic yet, so I'm sure the pace will quicken. Seems like a neat place to run around in, but I definitely wouldn't want to get lost. The payment is nonrefundable and monthly installments are not even available; only decade long contracts.

  Resident Evil

Due to the boredom of immortality, the designers made a 'real death' mode available. So if you die, that's it. But for those of us that are not bored, this is quite a trip into a world of horror. You'll see giant spiders, great white sharks, snakes the size of whales, unknown gruesome things, and zombies that will try their best to rip you to pieces! After playing the demo, I strongly recommend disactivating the music option. Your sense of hearing will help you tremendously. This is a 'pay as you play' title, with no commitments required. Clinically depressed people can play for free, as the extreme shock has been a proven source of therapy.

lol!  That was awesome.

Edit: Jodo, have you read "The Anubis Gates" by Tim Powers?  Seems like something you'd enjoy...I know I am.  It's one of the most original and surreal sci-fi novels I've ever read, and I highly recommend it.  P.S. Don't read too much about the plot in advance or it'll ruin the surprises that spring up throughout the novel (I was going to post a link to the wikipedia entry for this book but it has way too many spoilers).

Wideo-Games (not actually for the Wii, I just like pronouncing it that way because I'm Russian like that):

Persona 3: 'Cuz they're only releasing an LE in the U.S., and it's probably going to be rare.
Soul Nomad: Games by NIS tend to be rare, too.
Wild Arms 5: Probably wait on this one, WA4 went down to $20 in about a year or so.

Soundtracks:

It's a Wonderful World (SQEX-10100), 08/22/2007; been keeping on eye on this for awhile now; promises some rock, drum n' bass, hip-hop, trance, otherwise DDR style music. Hey, it'll sound good off of my car stereo, anyway. BASS! BASS! BASS!

Ah, my mistake then.  Guess the lack of "OST" or "soundtrack" after the name mislead me.

This is the first time I've heard of a Wii game getting a soundtrack release, actually.  Are there others?

I'm picking it up for completion purposes only. While there were a few funny gags here and there (Dash Dingo among them), on the whole the episodes showed a massive decline in quality. Not the worst season ever -- that honor goes to season 12 -- but it's the first season from which I can't choose even one outstanding, memorable episode.

I considered picking up Heroes Season 1, since I've heard good things and I want to catch up before the season starts.  Anyone here watched that show and give me anything, good or bad?

I watched the first season and loved it for the most part. It's hard for me to really recommend getting the DVDs though. I remember loving the first season of Lost, but by the end of the second season I was ready to burn my season one DVDs. Then again, the first season of Heroes stands on its own pretty well, so any future bad seasons probably won't affect your enjoyment of the first one. If you're a big fan of comic books and can overlook the numerous plot holes and the blatant ripping off of comic storylines (Watchmen, X-Men), I say give it at least a rent. Myself, I'll wait to get the HD-DVD version.

Konami's Elebits got one a while ago.

My potential purchases for the month:

Games:
Heroes of Mana - I skipped Children of Mana, but I've heard decent things about this game.

CDs:
Hime Trance 3
Dancemania Treasure 2007

DVDs:
Simpsons Season 10
Darkwing Duck Vol. 2 - Where's Talespin Vol. 2??

I'll definitely be picking it up. It's a great show (especially the second half of the season).

Game-wise, I just had my birthday and I'm hoping that a Wii will show up on my party. Then again, you never know. wink

Happy b-day Wanderer!

My August purchases will include a used PS2 from my friend (who himself just bought a PS3). I will finally be able to partake in the PS2 rpgs like DQ8. big_smile

It also means I will have to do some research on with PS2 titles to buy. Meh.

Wanderer Aug 4, 2007 (edited Aug 4, 2007)

Thanks guys. You're the best!

No Wii, sadly... although my grandma did give me a $5000 check which pays off half the new grand piano I'm getting. While I love my dinky upright (and have been playing on it since the age of 5), it was never completely in tune and it's getting a bit long in the tongue.

(I suppose I can wait until Metroid Prime 3 comes out tongue. I'll be getting a friend's X-Box 360 for just two hundred bucks, which includes a few wireless controllers).

Ryu Aug 4, 2007

Congrats, Bamatone!  If I ever get around to playing FFXII, I'll let you know.  I personally enjoyed Okami, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, Ace Combat series, and God of War series... although the latter ends with one hell of a cliffhanger.  = /

Wanderer, I have no idea why your friend would get rid of a 360 for $200.  I hope you enjoy it; I've really got a lot of use out of mine over the last 14 months or so.  I hope you can get one by the time Metroid Prime 3 releases.  You might want to keep an eye out now, since who knows if that game is going to be a system seller and if Nintendo won't be able to increase supply enough by then.

Well, he's getting a 360 Elite. wink We're best friends so he wants to give me a pretty good deal. Either way, it works out pretty well for me. I just wish I had a television that really shows off the graphical prowess of the system. One step at a time. wink

And yeah, you have a good point with the Wii. It's just that whenever I see them, they're always package deals, with games that I don't particularly want... And those don't last very long either. It astonishes me that the system has been out for almost a year and it's still hard to find.
