Also, a Metroid Prime 3 "preview" just hit. I think it's just a video, so no demo.

And this coming Monday the original Metroid.  I wish Nintendo would add GB and GBC games to the VC, since there are quite a few of those games I'd like to get (like Tetris, the three Zeldas, etc.).  I don't know what exactly is fair in relation to their current prices---I'd guess $3 for GB and $4 for GBC?

One could make an argument for why Super Metroid is THE BEST GAME OF ALL TIME.  Definitely a must play.

I don't know about best game of all time, but it's definately one a few games I'd deem almost perfect if not perfect.

That's why I said "one could make an argument", so as to let it be known that it's one of those games which is so good so as to be considered a possible choice for the honor.  Not to say that it is irrefutably the best game of all time.

So are you saying you don't know because you have something in mind that you feel is perhaps more worthy?  If that's the case, then I'm curious as to what particular game or games you're thinking of.

I was responding as if it was a rhetorical question, as if someone did make that argument - I wasn't insinuating you said it. I think I was talking to invisible board member99. Anyway, I can't or won't say that Super Metroid is perfect, but it's as pretty good example of how freakin close you can get.

Also, most of my favorite games happened to be flawed or very flawed in one way or another, and I have no problem admitting it or accepting it... they just happen to make up for their flaws in one way or another. Perfection is really an abstract idea at best - that's what I was driving at.

I have some of those and I like them just as much as Super Metroid.  But with my notion of objectivity playing a role, I wouldn't argue for them as being the best.  Just my favorites.  Super Metroid succeeds as much on a technical level as it does on a personal one, and that's why I think it's more worthy of the title than most.  People don't have to love it, but they do have to respect it.

It's like how I'm not as big a fan of Link to the Past as some.  But I do acknowledge that the game is virtually flawless.  Probably more flawless than Ocarina of Time, and yet I found the strengths of OOT to outshine its weaknesses by enough that I like it more.  Even so, I wouldn't argue that OOT was superior to Lttp.  It's only superior to me.  Lttp on the other hand could be said to be technically superior to most games, and if you enjoyed it a great deal as well, then there's certainly an argument for "best game of all time".

True, except perhaps in form and function, which I've hopefully done something to explain above.  Much of what makes gaming enjoyable however does lie in the realm of the subjective.  And even so-called objectivity can often be filtered through a person's point of view, so choosing the best is obviously an unrealistic notion.  I'm just such a fan of Super Metroid that I thought I'd bring up its technical prowess as well.  I can't do that with all of my favorite games, so it's nice that I can do it with Super Metroid. ^_^

That's an interesting comparison, actually.  You know, I've been playing through LttP recently on the VC lately and I'm shocked at just how different it feels from the 3D Zeldas.  The whole atmosphere and the kind of puzzles you have to do take on a much different feeling when you change the perspective.  Both are very well done, but I have a hard time comparing those two games with each other.  For me I think they're the pinnacle of 2D and 3D Zelda games, respectively (Twilight Princess could've had it for the latter, but the dungeon design was still not as inspired as OoT, I don't think).

Also, LttP is way, WAY shorter than I remembered it, especially when you know what you're doing.  I started and was through the first dark world dungeon and had a full row of hearts after a just a few hours one afternoon.

Not everyone in the world is that good at video games, no matter how long they've been playing them.

Most games seem (and indeed, play) so much shorter when you're not exploring everywhere and talking to everyone. Think about all the backtracking and dying you're not doing that you originally did.

I never played Super Metroid when I had a SNES for a brief period of time way back when, so this would be a good opportunity for me to play it on VC.

Yeah, I've never played it much at all and will probably pick it up. I got my ass handed to me by the original Metroid back in the day and didn't have much motivation to revisit the series until the GBA versions and Prime. I eventually tried Super Metroid on emulator and, while it seemed pretty good, it didn't seem all it's cracked up to be in comparsion to the later ones.

But, seeing as I seem addicted to VC games, I'll probably get this and give it another go.

It's not that difficult to beat Super Metroid in less than 2 hours. Of course, if you have a job, then it will be difficult. There are 2 main kinds of gamers - those with jobs and those without. Back when I was a little whip and didn't have to work, I could spend those 40-50 hours playing video games. From what I've heard from adult Gears of War online gamers is that often they get smacked hard by little kids. I've tried Gears of War myself and found it excruciatingly annoying because I don't have the time to spend trying to become comfortable with the control scheme. If I were 12 years old, then I imagine I would beating the shit out of 20 and 30 year olds right now.

Now that I finally, FINALLY have a Wii of my own (yay!), this is exactly the "predicament" I find myself with. I'm hoping to mainly limit my VC hoarding to titles I've never owned already. I started out small, with Galaga 90 and Super Mario 64 (no, seriously! I never really sat down and played it before! )

The SNES with Super Metroid is just over in my bedroom...do I really, REALLY need it on VC as well? Let's see how strong I really am...

The VC is a Godsend for me because I never owned a Genesis.  The first titles I got were Wonder Boy in Monster World and Dynamite Headdy.  Sonic's already on the gamecube (sold!) and I can't really think of any "must have" Genesis titles on the VC.

I'm weak. Very weak. I saw Super Metroid up there on the VC store, and I did not resist.

It's great to play it again, though. Kinda novel with the GC controller, for which I had to customize the controls a little.

I've beaten it at least 5 times.  We'll see if it's still irresistible enough when ... you know what, no.  I've got to save my money for Metroid Prime 3 and Jeanne D'Arc.  Yeah, I know it's 8 bucks, but darnit, school starts monday and I know books will be a b**** to buy, as well as school supplies and parking passes.  *blech*

I just noticed Neutopia is on the VC too! That looks like a fun Zelda clone. Anyone played it?

I played it on the old Turbo-Grafx 16 way back in the day.  Yeah, it's a pretty fun game, and an average person can discover most of the secrets without being omniscient (unlike Zelda).  I haven't played the game in ages, but I remember having fun with it.

See, I played Neutopia when I was about 19 and had a harder time figuring out what the heck I was supposed to be doing than I did when I was like... 9.  There's some weird stuff in Neutopia, but it's pretty fun.  I recall most of the music is pretty solid too... I used the overworld theme from it in an "ideal RPG" mix CD my friend and I made.

I'll bet you can replace "Neutopia" with almost any other old-school game and have similar results. I remember playing  the original Metroid on my GBA after I unlocked it in Zero Mission, and I was like, how the HELL did I do this when I was 8?! Times they are a changin'...
