...As for the theatrical release, when is that?  I hope someone brings it to the US (either in theaters or direct to home video) and that it doesn't take long to get here.

The theatrical release was September 1, 2007 in Japan and the soundtrack will be rolling out by month's end; 26th to be exact. There are no plans for the release here (yet) but I can guarantee it will be coming straight to DVD when it does (from ADV?). A review I read was rather favorable but cautioned the audiences that there's not much new to vets of the series apart from glitzy CG enhancements and, of course, the newly added footage.

I can't help it, I'm very excited to see the series revived with hopes of one more ending (as if the two before were not enough).

Same here.  ADV doesn't have a lock on theatrical releases, since the two movies were released through Manga.  Even so, Manga did try and keep the same voice actors to varying degrees of success, which was cool, in my opinion, although I'm not sure how most fans feel about them.

No soundtracks for me this month or DVD's.  Only one thing is on my mind for September '07.

Halo 3

Jodo Kast Sep 20, 2007

I'm not even familiar with what vgm releases are coming out this month and I only heard about Halo 3 because someone at work told me about it. I've been pretty isolated lately, just going to work and coming home to read or watch a movie. I did see D-War in the theater a few days ago and was not very happy with it. Of all the Korean movies to put in an American theater, they had to choose a lousy one.

I will be getting some DVDs this month:

Secret Sunshine
Muoi
Black House
Alone
Hwang Jin Yi

I did watch A Scanner Darkly last night and was very happy with it. Now that was a movie. (I would recommend reading the novel before watching the movie.)

Is anyone picking up the new PSP Slim this month?  I'll wait it out to see what others thinks of it, but I'd definitely opt for the Ice Silver, even if I have to pony up for the Entertainment Pack.

I will be picking it up *IF* I can actually find it.  The only place I can find that's even taking pre-orders for the unbundled Black version (I don't want any freaking Daxter game, thank you very much!) is Amazon.com, and I'm not entirely comfortably ordering something that delicate from them since they can't even ship CDs to me without smashing up the jewel cases, so I just ordered a 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo instead with the hopes that I'll be able to find the system in an actual store sometime between now and 10/24 when Dracula X hits stores.  Similarly, there's absolutely no word on the existence of the cable that connects the thing to a TV.  Sony's U.S. Playstation website doesn't even list is as a PSP accessory (or the new model of the system for that matter).  I was hoping Sony was going to use this new hardware to spark interest in the system, but I'm starting to get the feeling they're trying to keep it quiet until all of the old PSPs sell through the channels.

Well, I picked up the cables last week (both the A/V and component so I can hook it up to both my new set and older sets).  Amazon just got the bundle-free black system in stock today, but there's still no word as to when Brick & Mortar stores will see it, and none of the B&M stores' websites (Target, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, GameStop, or Circuit City) even have it listed.  So the search continues.

I got to try out the Ice Silver very briefly.  It is amazingly light in weight, and the d-pad and analog nub definitely feel better.  Regarding the screen, ghosting is noticeably less evident on the Spider-Man 2 UMD I watched on, as well as the short playtime I got to try with Parodius Portable.  Colors are slightly more saturated and more colorful.  I did like the gripping on the back of the old model better, but yeah, the reduction in weight pretty much earns my approval as the better model.

Too bad the av cables are useless if you want to play games on your older sets.  You can only play games via component cables.

Yeah, I just found that out earlier today when talking to a friend.  Makes absolutely no sense to me, but then this is Sony we're talking about.  I haven't decided for sure yet, but I may take those cables back if I have time.

Yeah, my friend and I went to get the PSP slim (silver bundle with Daxter) and he was so disappointed because none of his tvs have component.  I'm playing Powerstone Collection on my tv right now though... personally, I'm ambivalent about playing it on the screen or tv (although now I think I want Crazy Taxi Fare Wars for tv play), I just wish the loading times weren't so annoying.  I will say that the 16:9 setting, on a widescreen tv, is total shit.

I also traded up on the DS to a white Lite... sexy little thing.  That's about all I have to say about it until it gets a good test run with Zelda: PH next week.

I took the A/V cable back earlier today (technically yesterday), so that's some money back.  I'm disappointed that I'll only be able to hook it up to my LCD TV, but oh well.  As for the DS Lite,  I think I'm going to finally take the plunge as well since Target has them on sale for $120 starting today and I wouldn't mind spiffing up for Phantom Hourglass.

Picked up a Black DS Lite today.  The new touch screen takes some getting used to as it seems to have some sort of filter that diffuses the light quite differently than on the old model.  Tilting it away from the body makes it look yellow-ish while titling towards gives a purplish hue.  I had read about this on Kotaku, but it's a little odd in person.  Anyway, a straight on look is fine as is are slight tilts left or right.  Other than that, seems good to me and I look forward to playing Zelda on it this week.

Didn't want the red/black or pink/black one?  I kinda wanted the red/black one.

My Target only had the single color systems (not counting the Red & Black Brain Age 2 bunlde).  I didn't even know there was a pink/black one.

On page 2 of the Target circular, it says "$119 Sale - New DS Lite Crimson/Black color available Wed., Oct. 3.  Also available in pink and black."  The pink and black isn't pictured.  I didn't see a picture of it with a Google search, but I'm assuming it is nothing more than half of a pink and half of a black attached to each other.

Crash Oct 1, 2007

Or, it could mean that the other DS Lite color options are single-colored pink or black.  Given that the red and black one is listed with a slash (crimson/black), I would imagine that a pink and black one would be listed as pink/black.  I don't know either way.

I wouldn't have picked up the black version, actually.  I own one, along with two whites.  Besides said tinting problem, the screens themselves are a tad lower grade on the black than the whites.  The backlight is a tinge less powerful, and the screens themselves are less color-coordinated; where whites are more emphasized, the black gives off a paler color and slightly less vibrancy.  I've heard this is a problem with the new crimson red/black models as well.

Also, how's your d-pad?  Maybe it's the fault of the first production run, but I'm one of the unfortunates who got a faulty d-pad on the black.  You really have to press the thing down to get diagonals to work.

I believe Crash has it right.  I too just assumed they meant they had models in pink OR black; mostly because I've never heard of the existence of a pink and black combined version.

Then it is odd that they don't mention the white one, but it was pictured on the front page.  My bad, guys.  I'll learn to read.

The d-pad seems on the looseside, but I have no idea about the diagonals since I haven't really tried playing a non-touch game yet.  I'll have to think of a game that would be best to test it with.

Maybe you could try Metroid Fusion/Zero Mission if you have them, since you can shoot diagonally in those games.

Good idea.  I'll check it out and post my findings after I do.

Edit: I tested it with Zero Mission and the diagonals seem to be working just fine.  The super soft pad takes a bit of adjustment after the clicky pad on the regular DS, but no real issues here.

I finally found it.  I had to go out of my way to a Toys R Us, but I finally got the bloody thing.  It's really light.  I haven't tried the video out yet, but the screen is really nice and I'm not used to seeing such a high resolution on a portable.  The only one of my games I've tried so far is Mega Man Powered Up, and I'm really impressed by how tight the controls are.  The shift to 2.5D hasn't affected the responsiveness at all.  I was shocked by the sheer amount of DLC this game has.  I must've spent nearly a half-hour grabbing all of it so I'd have it in case Capcom pulls the server at some point in the future.  Thank goodness for the 4GB memory card I picked up.

Back to the system, I'm also a little overwhelmed by everything it can do.  I've never had a system with this many menus and options.  It's a little crazy.  I know I'll probably never use half of them.  Anyway, glad I've got it now -- Castlevania is only 1.5 weeks away!
