All I want is to play Intelligent Qube because it is (a) not cheap to find and (b) hated by SCEA who (1) don't know how to gauge demand and (2) refused to bring the PS2 sequel to the US.  Is it worth my time to flash a customized firmware on it for just this one game or should I wait for Sony to add it to the PSN?  Does anyone have a step-by-step (in English) guide to which they can link me?

It's easily done but you'll need a spare battery to do it and it has to be a "phat" one, not the Slim battery.

Bah, I have no spare batteries for my Slim or my cousin's 'phat' one.  I guess I'll have to hold off on this for a while until I get it.
