The Monday before Super Smash Bros Brawl comes out, what one game, the ONLY game, do you think they'd release?

If you guess Super Turrican for the SNES, you'd be correct.  Because that makes sense.  It's natural to release Super Turrican instead of something like the N64 Super Smash Bros.  And just one game?  Really?  The VC supports 6 systems!

Despite the fact both their systems print money, I can't help but conclude:  Nintendo sucks.  The Virtual Console is fast becoming a disappointment, and this week is one game shy of being as bad as Sony's PSN.

For the NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, TG16, and NeoGeo----what are your top 3 games for each system (if any) you'd like released on the VC?

Jay Mar 3, 2008

PSN's selection of PS1 games is quite horrific given that there are actually some great PS1 games.

I reckon the VC has already got a fantastic selection. Yeah I can see it making sense to release Smash Bros but, well... I don't really have an end to that sentence. There are some games I'd like to see but many, if not most, on my list are already up there.

I'd like to see Soleil/Crusader of Centy on Megadrive, all the Neo Geo fighters, especially the Last Blade games and that will do me for now.

Stephen Mar 3, 2008

Yes, I thought that was completely odd that Nintendo did not try to release N64's Super Smash Bros.  After all, they had a VC run-up for Metroid Prime 3 with a bunch of Metroid releases.

Qui-Gon Joe Mar 3, 2008

Yeah, I'm wondering what the heck is going on with the virtual console these days.  Down from three releases a week to ONE?  At the previous rate, I was still crossing my fingers for some of my more obscure favorites to show up (however unlikely).  Now it seems totally impossible.

I feel that Nintendo hires geniuses compared to the people at Sega.

Sega: "Lets see, Phantasy Star is one of the best selling games we ever made, and the trilogy has been remade for the PS2 in Japan, and consumers are hungry for it...I know what, let's release another Virtua Fighter in North America!" Idiots...

By the way, SNK rocks... I LOVE SNK! In fact, SNK Playmore is releasing SNK Arcade Classics for the PS2, and it includes some of THE best SNK games ever! Such as Samurai Shodown, Shock Troopers, Top Hunter, and more! Yup, if only other companies would follow the SNK model (like Stupid Sega). Oh, and retail price is $14.99 smile

Cool, I'm done bitching for now.

Oh that's not a fair comparison.  ALL COMPANIES are geniuses compared to Sega.  tongue

Worst run game company ever, from a business standpoint.

Ryu Mar 3, 2008

I'd be happy for more Jet Set/Grind Radio... it is because of Beat and Gum (and Samba) that I'm willing to give the Sega Superstar Tennis a shot.  That and waggle controls.  So, yeah, I don't get Sega either.

I didn't really have an answer for my poll, so I'll just say:  all unreleased Mario (including Super Mario RPG), Castlevania, Zelda and Treasure games, as well as Tetrisphere, and Earthbound.

Jay Mar 3, 2008

What I'd really love to see is a DS equivalent of the VC. Is it possible to load a game from the Wii Wifi to a DS? If so, they should do DS VC games.

Ryu Mar 3, 2008

They could if they sold blank, rewritable GBA or DS carts.  But, hell, Nintendo's too ridiculous about expanding the internal memory via a HDD or even SD cards.

I know it can be done.  Geometry wars has a bonus DS version that can broadcast to the DS.  As far as most old games go, you'll need to run it on a homebrew emulator.

There is an officially licensed slot-1 microSD adapter coming in the form of DSvision (the article says it comes out March, but it's since been delayed to April). It doesn't mention if games will be made available for it, but it seems like a no-brainer. At the very least, I'm sure someone will find an exploit to allow for homebrew.

Hey man, stop hating.  I love the VF4 Evo.  Though Sega of America is pretty dumb, considering the sheer amount of games they've kept in Japan (the other Sega Ages games, for one.)

Hehe, Sega sure has some great games. It makes me sad that Sega Ages games haven't made it here... sad and angry, although mostly angry! Damn, I SO wanted to play those Phantasy Star remakes...

NES: River City Ransom at the top by a wide margin. Is Nintendo handling imports? I know they brought Sin and Punishment for the 64 to VC, but was that a Japan only release? In that scenario, how about Sweet Home? SNK's Crystalis, would be nice too. Unless it's already on there.

SNES: Any of Squares' RPGs from that era. Earthbound would be nice, too.

Genesis: Only Michael Jackson's Moonwalker, because I hear it is awesome.

TG16: Wasn't the TG16, like, the same as the PC Engine? Wasn't Rondo of Blood only available in Japan for that system? And isn't also supposed to be one of the best Castlevanias ever?

Neo Geo: God, I never even touched that system. Wouldn't know what to ask for.

Ryu wrote:

Well, at least Super Turrican is supposed to be a good game (that's what I hear, anyway).  I bought the N64 Smash Bros. at launch way back whenever and what a piece of shit that was (forget about the fan service for a second -- it was a really sloppy game; fortunately Melee was much, much better).  If I was Nintendo, I wouldn't want people thinking Brawl had anything to do with that game.

Ryu wrote:

I didn't realize consoles were now judged soley by what downloadable stuff they have to offer.  I agree that it's lame of Nintendo to cut back on Virtual Console releases, but I don't particularly care since they've only released one game I wanted anyway.  Microsoft has released just one I would buy as well (Rez HD), and I don't think there's anything on PSN I'd pay to download at the moment, so they're all about the same in my book.

Ryu wrote:

NES: Mother (in English)
SNES: Live A Live, Terranigma, Seiken Densetsu 3 (all in English)
N64: [Nothing... I don't need a high-res emulated GE007... I'd much rather have the canned remade X360 version]
GEN: [Nothing]
TG16: [Nothing]
NG: [Nothing]

My biggest problem with the VC is the pricing structure.  I have no interest in paying those kinds of prices for games I mostly already own or have already played to death.  I didn't mind paying $12 for Sin & Punishment, but that had never been released here before.  I think old games should be cheaper.  I'd buy a ton of NES VC games if they were a $1 each, I'd consider Genesis games at $2, Turbo games at $3, SNES games at $4, and N64 games at $5.  As it stands, I'm going to pass on most titles unless they're brand new (Wii Ware) or newly translated imports.

I guess I understand your viewpoint Avatar.  I remember feeling like this before I started importing.  But, since I pretty much only buy Japanese/Asian PS/2 games now, I've really lost the same empathy.  I can appreciate your feelings on an intellectual level, you know?, but since it doesn't affect me anymore the feeling is nowhere near as strong.  If you haven't already though, you should probably start!  It seems like it'd be right up your alley judging from what I can of your viewpoint.

Besides, unlike cheap ass Sega of America (seriously, a ten or so page photocopy for Sonic 2?  Cheap.**), Sega in Japan gives huge lavish colour booklets for their games!  So, thats a reason.

Actually I find myself having more sympathy with the original pretext of this thread, as older games are becoming a little harder to find for everybody, so to see them re-released always comes to me as more pressing (though I don't use any of the VC PSN myself.)

** Hey, does anybody remember the Sonic 3 (US) booklet?  I just recalled this, but I def. remember there being a passage in the 'pro tips' (or whatever they called... "Sonic's high flying tips" or whatever focus-tested trash they came up with) saying that there are certain places in the game where "Sonic may become stuck in a wall" due to "Dr Robotnik's devious traps", so you have to reset.  Now thats a lame cop-out!

You want Bakumatsu Rouman 1/2, the King of Fighters ('96 to '98), Garou Real Bout Special and Mark of the Wolves, and then you want Nintendo to implement some sort of on-line (and preferably lagless) multi-play function! wink

SonicPanda Mar 5, 2008

Oh Nintendo, you jerks.

NES: River City Ransom, Megaman 2, Goonies 2
SNES: StarFox, Mario Paint, Super Punch-Out!
Genesis/SCD: Rocket Knight Adventures, Sparkster, Snatcher
N64: Mystical Ninja 64 (assiming its not doomed because Wii doesn't support Memory Paks), Hybrid Heaven (never played, I'm curious), Banjo-Kazooie (yes, I know, fat chance)
TG16/Duo: Ys Book I & II, Cosmic Fantasy, Rondo of Blood
Neo*Geo: [Actually, if they'd make a Samurai Shodown set, I'd just get that. Let's trade Neo*Geo in for NG Pocket, hmm?]

Sami Mar 5, 2008 (edited Mar 5, 2008)

I'm definitely more interested in Turrican than Smash Bros. Not too crazy about the shortage of titles though.

Anyways...

NES: Clash at Demonhead, Ducktales, North & South
Genesis/MD: Contra Hard Corps, Chiki Chiki Boys, Shining Force II
SNES: Super Famicom Wars, Shin Megami Tensei, Seiken Densetsu 3
N64: Majora's Mask, Wipeout (yeah fat chance), Ogre Battle
Turbografx: Dracula X
Commodore 64: The New Zealand Story, Turrican, Donald Duck's Playground

allyourbaseare Mar 5, 2008

SNES:  Terranigma.  That's it.  If that was the only release on the VC, I'd die a happy man.
NES:  Well, they already put out Startropics, so I can't really complain there.  Blaster Master and Journey to Silius are mandatory though.
GEN:  Dynamite Headdy & Wonder Boy?  Done.  big_smile
N64:  Mischief Makers & SSB.

avatar! Mar 5, 2008

Dracula X? It's already been released on the PSP! Not only is it upgraded and awesome, but it includes the ORIGINAL Dracula X which came out on the TurboDuo and Symphony of the Night! Seriously, why bother with a VC release when you already have something much better... unless you really don't want to purchase a PSP. Personally, I think a PSP is worth the cost for that purchase alone!

best argument to ditch virtual console altogether. you dont need an overpriced nothing vs a collection of good games on your shelf for $14.99. btw, you cant call Sega stupid for releasing this one:

To a lot of people I know (myself included), getting to play it on a TV = much better.  I guess you could get the new model TV, but then you'd need to have a TV with component in jacks and you'd have to play it in a little window.  Who knows, though, Konami already ported Silent Hill Origins to the PS2... with that Dracula X collection's abysmal sales, how soon before they port that too?

Brandon Mar 5, 2008

Meh. I just can't get excited about VC. Thanks to emulators, I've played almost all of the old gamse I want to play--the only thing a VC release means to me is that I have to pay up in order to continue playing with a clear conscience.

Speaking for myself, paying $9 to play the game on a large screen makes more sense than paying $200 for game and system to play it on a small screen. I may get a PSP eventually, and if those extras measure up, DXC's an insta-buy. But in the here and now, I just wanna play it.

P.S. I know about the Win32 port someone made, but man was never meant to play Castlevania on a keyboard.

Which is why God, in His infinite wisdom, created USB gamepads.

Very true, Sega's Gensis Collection is spectacular! It amuses me to think that people would actually pay $8 or whatever it is to download a Genesis game, when for $20 you can get 28 Gensis games plus original arcade games including the arcade Altered Beast smile AWESOME! Best thing Sega has done in a LONG time... wish they'd follow-up!

I hear ya. I don't have a fancy new TV myself, although I must say that if I did, I'd certainly play Dracula X on it. I'm certain the quality is great, although that said I would love to see a port of Rondo to the PS2!

Emulators can be huge hassle, especially for multiplayer games. The time that you need to set up everything is easily worth the $5 to $8 or $10.

It is awesome.  Plays really swell, and MJ's music adaptations running through that FM Synth was pretty damned impressive.  I remember turning on the game just to head into the sound test and listen to "Beat It."

A while ago I was looking for just that (classic songs in chiptune form), but didn't turn up much (gave up too soon?). Thanks for delivering one nugget!

Ryu Mar 8, 2008

What are the odds Sega will release Moonwalker?  Considering the personal faults of Michael Jackson, I'd think they'd leave the game in the past like Nintendo did with Mike Tyson.

Idolores Mar 8, 2008

Angela, thanks! This sample is awesome! I need to find some way to play this game.

Just picked up the 25th Anniversary Thriller today, too. Glad I went through the posts again.

And as for Michael being gone from the game scene, Ryu, you may be right. I know he was set to do the music for Sonic 3 on the Genesis, but then those nasty allegations came up, and shit went downhill. But he made a cameo in Space Channel 5 as "Space Michael", which rocked hard.

I was always hoping for his more hard rock material to make it into Rock Band or Guitar Hero. Beat It, or Dirty Diana, or DS. He did a lot, but those were the most memorable.
