I was thinking about this at work the other day and I have to say I side with those that put (most) of the blame on Square-Enix. If those battles weren't as they were are ppl couldn't attempt them. You can't attempt something that's not in the game. Put an inane goal like this in a game and some person with too much time on their hands is bound to do it if the mentality of gamers being gamers. Also, I really doubt any fan/player would think an 18 hour battle would be a great addition to any game if someone suggested it to them.

This isn't to say personal responsibilty doesn't come into play either on the part of the players but again if you don't give the players a reason or chance to do something like this that doesn't even come into play.

There's also peer pressure involved. You're there with a group of "others" you know through the net, that have supported you through the game ... and so it takes a collective "f--- it" to leave, otherwise people stay on.

I'm sorry, I have to disagree with this. When you're worried about what other people (people you usually never see in real life) think about you if you don't play a game that is very sad. I'd take peer pressure from person I see everyday or on a regular basis more seriously than someone hidding behind a screen name. As for betraying a "guild" by leaving, it's not like you're not irreplacible... I'm sure there is some other person with more time on their hands more than willing to fill any void you'd create.

Even if it is just a game, a guild is still supposed to be a team.  Why is it sad to feel obligated to pull one's weight on a team?

I know what your saying, but when you go over to a friends house to hang out and they're talking and interacting with guild members and a game more than you - a person that is actually there - or leave a fun event/time because they just have to be in front of their computer at 9:00 to do "Molten Core" you tend to lose any and all sympathy. Seriously, I don't bother with that particular person anymore.

18 hours!? That's just boring and repeative... to me...

I grilled the FFXI dev team about Absolute Virtue (and, by extension, Pandemonium Warden) last month at FanFest. see here:

So what now? Instead of 18 hours, you now only have 2 hours to beat it or you have to try again?! That sounds frustrating too...

cheers,

I think Square Enix should be criticized, eventually punished! Just like we would criticize and punish a drug company for making addictive and harmful drugs. Especially when they advertise their product to be something else than it is... Wait a minute? Can't you demand some compensation (?) when your drug does something to you that wouldn't expect it to do? big_smile I crave some of Squeenix' profit. >_>

Good work Ramza! I admire your devotion to RPGs and game music. You gotta be a man with lots of energy. smile

and that energy is fed by my addiction to FFXI. tongue

Thanks for the compliment, in all seriousness.
