In other news, Nintendo will be making a brand new first party game sometime in the year 2011.

But until then, the big N is rereleasing some older GCN titles for the Wii. I am just going to assume that they'll have Wii functionality like the RE0 port that was released in Japan. Honestly? Not too thrilled about it. Metroid Prime and Prime 2 are almost perfect, and I for one will not be double-dipping just to have Wii functionality.

Agreed on all points, mang.

XLord007 Oct 3, 2008

I might be interested in MP1&2 Wii if they add 16:9 and keep the prices sub-$20.  If they're still 4:3, I'll pass.

Jay Oct 4, 2008

For me, they'd have to add 16:9 and bundle them together. Rereleasing games on a system that still plays the originals and adding nothing but a bit of wrist waggling seems like a rather cynical repackage to me. Oh, and I'm pretty sure a rerelease of Pikmin was all that was planned for the actual gamers when it was mentioned at E3. Sounds like they've been embarrassed into putting Pikmin 3 into development.

charmed699 Oct 4, 2008

I am quite proud to finish the 1st and 3rd game but the 2nd has this boss that really annoys me. tongue

An odd choice of titles to rebrand considering it seems like the series os more of a cult following. I think that Chibi robo was also on that list though which I actualy want to try because PAL version is like gold dust...

Qui-Gon Joe Oct 4, 2008

To me this seems like kind of a no brainer... it probably takes minimal effort to retool the controls a bit in games that are already completed, and rebranding them as "play on Wii!" is a great way to introduce some awesome titles to all the Wii owners who never owned a Gamecube.  Amusing to me since, ya know, I thought the Gamecube was freakin' awesome and nobody bought it but the Wii is selling like hotcakes with a software library that isn't as good.

Kenology Oct 6, 2008

Metroid Prime 1 & 2 with Metroid Prime 3's control scheme, a $19.99 price tag, 16:9/480p = a definite buy for moi.  The first is confirmed and the third is a given... let's just hope the price is right.

Nah, they confirmed that the Pikmin game Miyamoto referred to was a brand new game in the series and not the re-release.

longhairmike Oct 6, 2008 (edited Oct 6, 2008)

for me they'd have to downscale them to 2D,, i get so fricking lost in those 3D first person games even with a map.

and, ummm.. a Wii can already play the MP1 & 2 original gamecube games which are widely available used for $5-$10 each..

rein Oct 7, 2008

I think it highly unlikely that these ports will retail for less than $39.99 each.  I wouldn't even rule out a price of $49.99 for each.

Well I've been waiting for this since playing Metroid Prime 3. Though I hope they make some other changes too, the game mechanics and level design were also vastly improved in MP3 besides the controls.

And what's that about brand new games? Punch Out Wii, Rhythm Heaven Gold, Sin & Punishment 2, Disaster, Wii Music, Warioware Made in Ore, Mario & Luigi 3, Pikmin 3, new Mario & Zelda games being made... even without counting all the third-party stuff on Wii and DS, Nintendo keeps pumping out a ton of games.

That was a tongue in cheek comment about Nintendo's lack of new titles. All of those that you mentioned (except for Wii Music) are sequels of some sort - not an original, fresh game. It's to the point where Nintendo hardly ever does anything new and just rehashes old titles or releases more and more sequels and spinoffs.

Seriously, the last actual game IP Nintendo created was Pikmin back in 2001.  I'm sorry, but Nintendogs, Brain Age, and the Wii Sports/Play/Fit/Music series do not count.

Why not?

Probably because he expects game with stories and original characters, which I think is reasonable enough.

Is Pikmin really the last such title Nintendo has produced?

Well, no. Assuming the question wasn't just snark, there's been Layton, Advance Wars, Chibi-Robo, and Magical Starsign to name a few. But the sentiment is understandable.

According to GameFAQs, Layton was developed by Level 5, Chibi was Skip Ltd. and Starsign was developed by Brownie Brown (whoever they are). Advance Wars (2002) was by Intelligent systems, though - aren't they a dev team within Nintendo? It looks like the other three aren't first party games and were just published by Nintendo, unless Skip Ltd. and Brownie Brown are internal devs.

Jay Oct 8, 2008

And isn't Advance Wars a sequel to Famicom Wars (1988)?

Oh, touché! Totally forgot about that.

You're joking, right?

Brownie Brown is a group of developers that worked on the Seiken Densetsu series who broke away from Square and formed their own company.  Currently they are a 1st-party developer for Nintendo.  They also developed Heroes of Mana, Sword of Mana, and pretty much anything to do with the Mana name.  They also did Mother 3 & Blue Dragon Plus.

I had no idea, man. I never really followed the Seiken series and didn't get into any of those other RPGs that you mentioned. Thanks for the info, though. smile

Intelligent Systems is a first party Nintendo studio as well.  It used to be one of the R&D labs back in the day... the one ran by Gunpei Yokoi.
