Soundtrack Central The best classic game music and more

About a year ago, I sold off a lot of my video games including what where some of my most coveted games: those from the Mega Man X series. I had everything except X3 and the Xtreme titles on it's native console and decided only to keep X, X2 and X4.

Recently I sold my extra copies of the X7 and X8 soundtracks off to a friend of mine and talking about the music got me thinking about the story - convoluted as it turned out to be. This led me to a twenty page word document I typed up three years ago that contained the series entire narrative (excluding two GBC Xtreme Titles and Command Mission) and I seriously wanted to play through some of these crappy games again.

So, I just got back from the retro game store with X5, X6, X7, X8 and Command Mission in toe. Ugh, guess I'm a true. blue. sucker. Won't be selling these off again. Ever.

If the games are that bad, why even bother? I don't get it.

I'd be interested in seeing that 20-page document smile

I take it you've never grown up with something you thought was great but saw the truth when you were older only to realize as flawed as it is it's still a big part of who you are. If not, I can only imagine how great that is because it would have saved me some money.

When I played X5 and its sequels, I had the fortune of being old enough already to recognize junk, no matter how much I love the series. X8 wasn't bad though.
That said, I would never ever EVER sell anything Megaman related.

X4. Awesome.

Never really got into or even had the chance to do a lot with X5-7. 8 was fun. 1 - 3 are fun too.

But X4...yeah. smile smile smile

Agree. Trying to track down the Jap original for Saturn.

For serious. It's my favorite X title by far.

For me it's the original X and X4, both the games and soundtracks are the highlights of the series.

I'd easily concur with that statement Mike. Easily my favorites!

I never really got the hate for X5. I found it fun and well-designed.

Likewise, I never got the love for X8, which despite a return to proper 2D gameplay, I never felt any motivation to get anywhere. Great music though.

X6 and X7 (and X3) can pretty much burn though. No argument on X4 though. I loved that game and it was the main reason I was excited for the RMX soundtrack boxset.

I grew up on the classic series, so I'm not quite as attached to the X series (and definitely nothing that has EXE in the title...Legends turned out to be one of the few 3D action/adventure games I've ever finished and I really liked it, aside from being Megaman-related). Reminds me how I keep thinking I should go out and pick up a Megaman 5 cart, so I can say I own all 9 (Megaman and Bass for GBA) physical classic games.

If Mega Mega X5 was the last game in the series (as Kenji originally intended) I'm sure I'd look on it and the series in a much better light. Then again, I'm glad they made X6~8 becauase Akemi Kimura got a chance to do the music.

I have to say this, the ending of Mega Man X8 makes me mad. To (presumably) end the series with more questions than answers... pfff. Unless they make another one I doubt any of the other Rockman games are gonna fill us in on what went on/goes on with Axl beyond that point. And to think I though he was so uninteresting....

I've never got the hate for X3, especially when it comes to the SNES music; stuff like "Gravity Beetle Stage" and "Toxic Seahorse Stage" rock out loud - and yes, I say this because I've found your opinion in your review to be interesting - Yuki Iwai's X2 taking the fall (outside a few key tracks) when it comes the SNES scores in my opinion.

Interestingly enough, X3 was scrapped and resurrected a few times during its development so it almost never was.

XLord007 Nov 14, 2008

I started to lose interest in the X series when they went too far with the different armors and rides.  Keep it simple, please!

I loved MMX and MMX2, and I enjoyed the GBC remixes as well.  X3 and X4 had their moments, but I had enough when I got to X5 and its annoying time limit thing.  I still bought the rest of them (excluding Command Mission), but only played each one long enough to realize they weren't worth my time.

GoldfishX Nov 15, 2008

The music for X3 was superb (both the SNES and PSX versions). It's the game that I found intolerable. I actually don't see too many people hating on the soundtrack for X3.

Oh yeah, I forgot I reviewed this thing awhile back. I rather like X2's music nowadays. It's not flashy, but it's fun and won't be getting its' iPod walking papers anytime soon. I'll gladly come crawling back to something like that and re-evaluate when faced with what a lot of modern VGM has to offer...

Idolores Nov 18, 2008 (edited Nov 18, 2008)

My favorites were X, X2, and X4. I felt X4 was really crisp presentation-wise, and I loved it. I felt X5 was a step back, but I can't articulate why I feel that way. sad

X6, I played maybe 10 minutes of. Need to play more.

X7 and X8 remain completely unplayed. Good music, you say?

Edit: I recently went back to X3 recently and didn't like it nearly as much as I did way back when I had the SNES cart.

I may be the only person in the world who liked X6, flaws and all.

I like it, for me, it's probably the best X game after the first one. And I didn't much like X5 until I forced myself to really finish it, started liking it after that.

Eirikr Nov 19, 2008

Ashley, I bought X5, 6, and 8 from you last year. Just the past weekend I watched a friend slog through X6 in all of its abysmal glory. Truly, the baddle hasz just begunn.

IMO, though, you kept the only games in the X series worth playing.
