Soundtrack Central The best classic game music and more

Angela Feb 1, 2009 (edited Feb 2, 2009)

For me, this month will pretty much be entirely devoted to Street Fighter IV -- which includes the PS3 Collector's Edition of the game, the regular 360 version, a Tournament Edition FightStick for both, and a FightPad for the 360.  (The Ryu one, in case anyone's interested - it's got the coolest color palette combination.)  As for soundtracks, the SFIV Original Soundtrack, natch.  Grand total?  Approximately $525.  Cripes, that's a-spicy Hadouken.

Lots of good stuff coming out this month, though.  Killzone 2 should be huge.  RPG fans should be looking forward to Legacy of Ys I & II, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, Dragon Quest V: Hand of The Heavenly Bride, and Star Ocean: The Last Hope.  Since LocoRoco 2 will be on the cheap, I'll find some way to slide that in, but I'll wait for reviews on Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero?  I'm curious to see how Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop will fare on the Wii, but I was really hoping they'd implement online multiplayer for Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection -- playing Golden Axe via online co-op would've been the shit.

After hearing the samples, the Let's Tap's Soundtrack will be a possible pick-up.

Idolores Feb 1, 2009

Febuary, huh? Let's do 360. Might look into FEAR 2. Didn't like the first, since it felt like the horror elements were purely for gimmicks' sake. Street Fighter IV looks pretty cool. I guess we'll see.

All else, maybe just Prinny. We'll see.

Nothing else for me.

the_miker Feb 1, 2009 (edited Feb 1, 2009)

I'm excited to hear Ninja Blade Original Soundtrack, THE SQUARE ~ T-SQUARE since 1978 30th Anniversary Festival "Yaon de Asobu", Derby Owners Club 2008 Feel The Rush Original Soundtrack, RIZ-ZOAWD Original Soundtrack, GRADIUS ReBirth Original Soundtrack, Let's Tap Soundtrack, and of course Street Fighter IV Original Soundtrack.  Out of those, the only one I can say for sure that I'll buy is RIZ-ZOAWD.  Though with involvement from great musicians like Norihiko Hibino, T-Square, Takenobu Mitsuyoshi, Shinji Hosoe, Ayako Saso, Masaharu Iwata, Manabu Namiki, and Naofumi Hataya.. I could very well be buying many of those other releases as well. wink

Also, now that I think about it, who the heck is composing for Street Fighter IV?  Did I miss the announcement or something?  Yoko Shimomura would be nice but since that's very unlikely, I can live with someone else just as long as they include a bunch of decent Street Fighter II arrangements.

February '09 looks to be a pretty big month for VGM!

Edit: Forgot to mention Street Fighter IV for PS3.  Not sure if I'm getting the Collector's Edition or not but I'll definitely be buying this game.

Wanderer Feb 1, 2009

Dragon Quest V and Star Ocean IV for me (although I'll be waiting for reviews on the latter).

Amazingu Feb 1, 2009

Financial situation permitting, I will be getting Street Fighter IV on PS3, probably the regular edition, although the LE looks very tasty. I'm not getting the 360 version, because the D-pad sucks, and I ain't gonna put money down for an Arcade Stick, because I friggin SUCK with Arcade Sticks.
So the PS3 is the only viable option for me.

After all these months of hype I still remain completely and totally uninterested in Killzone, to the extent even that I do not quite understand why people are so excited about it. From what I've seen it doesn't look that spectacular at all, let alone fun.

As for the RPGs Angie mentioned, Star Ocean 4 is definitely my most looked-forward-to game of this month. If finances only allow me to pick 1 game up, I'm going to have to choose this over SFIV.
All the others, well, I already finished the Japanese version of Legacy of Ys, played and disliked the new Fire Emblem and have no interest whatsoever in the entire Dragon Quest franchise, so, yeah, Star Ocean 4 for teh win I guess. Let's hope it actually turns out GOOD.

That Ultimate Genesis Collection is looking mighty tasty too, I may have to import that.

Also, I hope to be receiving my PSP this month, so I'll pick up some (cheap) games for that. Anything Megaman is a no-brainer, as well as FFVIICC and Dissidia. Also interested in Chains of Olympus and anything Metal Gear.

Can anyone recommend any other PSP games?

SonicPanda Feb 1, 2009

I've already paid for Prinny, and I'll get DQ5 if I can find it less the S-E tax. Ultimate Genesis is a yes, MadWorld a probable, and Retro Game Challenge and My World My Way two wait-and-sees.
I've also watched a video or two of SF4 and it looks alright. Not sure I'd spring for the CE (and I won't get a fight stick, mainly because I've always played better with gamepads), but it looks better than I'd anticipated.

*whew* Big damned month.

James O Feb 2, 2009

I think it'll just be Ys on Nintendo DS for me this month.

Ono mentioned in an interview he tapped Shin Onimusha's composer for sound director, so that's Hideyuki Fukasawa, the Chaos Legion guy.

Shoe Feb 2, 2009

Not that i have a Wii anymore, but is it safe to say that House of The Dead OVERKILL won't have the same charm as the other games since it wasn't developed in Japan?

Last I'd heard, MadWorld got pushed back to March.  Tentatively the 10th.

Nice, thanks for the confirmation.  As for SFII arrangements, there should be plenty of those, but I'm hoping the console exclusive characters get them, too - especially Cammy and Fei Long.  Alpha remixes would also be sweet, like Sakura and Gen.

Off the cuff, though, I give the three Konami PORTABLE shooter collections a recommendation.  Virtua Tennis: World Tour or Virtua Tennis 3, and the first two DJ Max Portables as well.

I understand one of the arcade games you can unlock is Shinobi!! I have such fond memories of that game...
if only they would have included the arcade version of Golden Axe, then I think it would have been perfect! As is, for $30, it's Fantastic!

im sure SF IV will eat up all my time this month. i've already pre-ordered the CE along with two TE sticks for the win. prinny will get some love as well. other than that, im working on my backlog.

Etrian Odyssey on DS, Okami on the Wii, and FF12 on PS2.

In the 4th Stratum, Sandy Barrens

I've been taking my time and playing only short sessions to lengthen the experience, because honestly the game is so good that I don't want it to end.

allyourbaseare Feb 2, 2009 (edited Feb 2, 2009)

Honestly, the 4th stratum was one of the funnest. smile  Have fun with that twist ending (although I should've seen it coming)!  SPOILER Don't kill your self trying to get through that 6th stratum.  I never did it because I didn't want to mar the wonderful experience of the rest of the game.  Grinding and exploration is fun, when done right.

Oh, and I really want to get My World, My Way.  That is, of course, after I finish playing Princess Debut.  What's wrong with me?

Idolores Feb 2, 2009

Angela: Re: Cracked hinges was the root cause, yes.

Herrkotowski Feb 2, 2009

Not too much this month. Of course, I say that barring any unexpected VGM releases.

Arcana Hearts 2 Suggoi! Remix
Let's Tap Original Soundtrack

charmed699 Feb 2, 2009 (edited Feb 2, 2009)

I'm glad to see some interest on Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon Angela and you plus anyone else won't be dissapointed for sure.

Well honeslt not sure if I will buy any of the following but no harm in making up a list right?

Millionheir DS because for some reason it is getting me really curious about playing it. It seems like Layton but from what I read about it makes it seem the complete opposite?

Maybe Pikmin Wii remake but not really sure as I could just buy the cube game cheap. It might happen if I see it really cheap but that's it.

Chrono Trigger which is really weird because GAME has the soundtrack cd as a pre order bonus and I actualy want that more than the game.Well I do want to play the game a lot but problably not for full price. tongue

Walk with me but it seems that its price has doubled out of a sudden which means I might not buy it at £40!

Resident evil 5 is a must and collector edition at that even if I have to save up every penny for it!

I really want Street Fighter 4 too so will have to do some saving up for that too.I actualy attempted my first ever music editing for some competition. Let's just say that I hope whoever hears Cammy's mix won't be deaf for a few months.

SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate collection is a must at all costs as that just keeps getting better and better everytime!

House of The Dead OVERKILL and Mad World but mainly the first as I want that art book.

Let's tap, let's tap, rythm moving game... that's catchy but not sure if I got monmey for it. Will get it if I can but do yo guys reckon the game will ever make it outside of Japan or is the box too expensive?  tongue

Anyway still waiting for  Sonic Unleashed/Kirby soundtracks to arrive so that's something to look forward. I so need a job guys...

Why, incidentally, do things need to be UNLOCKED in compilations like these? I understand some people can't be brought to play games these days without the carrot of Achievements or Trophies, but why should I have to spend time on games I don't want to play to access ones I do? The two hours spent unlocking Ristar in the GC Sonic pack will never return...

charmed699 Feb 3, 2009

At least you unlocked Ristar when all I got was Vectorman after playing it for hours. wink

Some of those games are unlockables such as Fantasy Zone but I understand why it is that way. If everything was avaiable from the start people would play everything quickly and get bored. It's like getting tv shows to run only one episode every week otherwise it would end quickly. tongue

In a normal game, having unlockables makes sense, but in a compliation, everything should be unlocked from the start.  What you do or don't play is your business, and it's not like you're ever going to play more than a third of the games on there to completion anyway, so shouldn't you at least be able to try them all and see what you like?

The previous Sonic Collections were particularly offensive, where you had to play some games 20 or 30 times to unlock the other ones.

avatar! Feb 5, 2009

I can see why some people are upset over the fact that you have to unlock some of the games, but I also realize that everyone is a critic and no matter what, some people are going to complain. Fortunately, I don't mind, and in fact I think unlockables are cool! It makes the games more enjoyable for me, and I hope Sega and other companies continue to release such compilations with more unlockables smile

Shinobi... can't wait!!

cheers,

ps The ONLY think that I can think of that would make this compilation better, is the original arcade Golden Axe...

Ashley Winchester Feb 5, 2009 (edited Feb 5, 2009)

Honestly, I'm going to start cutting back on my purchases. I've purchased so many CD's as of late I have enough to keep myself occupied.

However, there is another reason. I honestly think I'm going to be out of a job very soon: when you're lining up fork lifts to occupy space to hide the fact there is a lack of work when the owner shows a new client the factory (something that we've never been desperate enough to do before) you can't help but get worried.

I want to sell some stuff on eBay, but man, I really don't feel like it. Everytime I start to make up a post I close the browser halfway though thinking about how much of a pain it is anymore.

Edit: Oh yeah, I checked out the new Edguy album. I didn't like it - give me any album before it.

Jodo Kast Feb 5, 2009

Street Fighter IV and Gradius Rebirth OSTs. Also a few Korean movies that only 3 people have ever heard of.

Adoru Feb 5, 2009

Looks like I'm late to the tread. Everything that is not rpg can wait, and everything that is rpg will wait anyways.

PS3
Sonic's Ultimate Collection (maybe)
X Blades (maybe)
Street Fighter IV (maybe)
Killzone 2 (maybe)

PSP
Prinny (maybe)

360
Star Ocean 4

DS
Ys Book I & II
Fire Emblem
Dragon Quest V
Blue Dragon Plus

Did I miss anything?

Herrkotowski Feb 26, 2009

Well, I lied.

Originally I was just going to purchase:

Arcana Hearts 2 Suggoi! Remix
Let's Tap Original Soundtrack

But I've also picked up:

Street Fighter IV Original Soundtrack
DoDonpachi Dai-Fukkatsu Original Soundtrack
Ninja Blade Original Soundtrack (signed no less!)
I'm Here to Hear... (Hibino solo album)
Genmu no Tou to Tsurugi no Okite Original Soundtracks
Flower (PSN)
Street Fighter IV (PS3)
Prinny ~ Can I Really Be the Hero? (PSP)
Soldner X Complete Soundtrack (from Zane)

At least in March, there's only 1 OST at the moment that I'm getting...

Carl Feb 26, 2009

Automotive repairs.
(way more expensive than shipping stuff from Japan, but way less fun.)

Herrkotowski wrote:

I'll vouch for those ones: You shouldn't be disappointed!

I'm Here to Hear is some really good "five-star" instrumental "dining room" jazz,

while Genmu is mostly electronic, with some classical and gothic motifs, and vaguely reminds me of some of the Front Mission soundtracks. It's a short soundtrack, and they couldn't done without the second disc of chiptunes, and it WAS pretty expensive from Cocoebiz, but I'm RATHER enjoying it, too!

Herrkotowski Feb 26, 2009

Yeah, I've heard the jazz album since I have it. My other one, from the samples, sounds really good. I just have to wait for it and Let's Tap to ship together >.<.
