Does anyone else think this will flop?

http://www.thebeatlesrockband.com/

Nothing against the Beatles, but I have a feeling the 'rock band' / 'guitar hero' is a little played out...Viacom is apparently hoping to sell 10 million when it goes on sale this week. I have a hard time seeing the video game buying public pouring their dollars into this edition.

Angela Aug 31, 2009

The marketing push alone is almost guaranteed to assure this a moderate level of success.  On top of which, there's probably a bigger demographic than you think for The Beatles.  I have three older co-workers who are, by the furthest stretch of the definition, "gamers" -- casuals who are mildly into the whole Band/Hero scene, but are excited as hell for this one.

Carl Aug 31, 2009 (edited Aug 31, 2009)

Flop????   Are you kidding, this is gonna sell like bananas, eggs, and milk.

This will see massive, massive amounts of sales.

It's not the "video game buying public" who's frothing over this, it's all the non-gamers, casual gamers, and people who have never bought a guitar-based game yet, until this Beatles brand has now called them into action.

The universal appeal of the Beatles casts a very, very wide net.

One 40-something co-worker of mine is in dire financial straits (already 3 months behind on his house mortgage payments, his wife is working 2 part time jobs to help make ends meet, they have 2 young kids) and even HE'S GOING TO BUY THIS.

Smart.

That's what I mean about the MASS APPEAL of the Beatles.
Even though the bank is in the process of foreclosing on his house, Beatlemania is still drawing him in.

(he hadn't bought any previous RB/GH stuff and only has a console for his kids to play, as his enjoyment is a big vinyl collection.)

I expect it to do very well.  Talking to a friend the other night, she said her parents have a wii and one game: Wii Sports.  The fully loaded $250 edition of The Beatles Rock Band will be their second game.

Holy shit, you're right! I can't believe it's been a decade since I sat in my buddy's humid room watching the opening movie to FFVIII after classes at my junior high. I was wowed at the time by it's technical prowess, and that opening video was amazing.

Shoe Sep 9, 2009

I will never play FF8 ever again in my life.

..Still love some of the songs from the soundtrack, though.

James O Sep 9, 2009

ah yes, I remember playing the FFVIII demo for everyone in our old anime club office at the U of A one Friday afternoon after classes were done.  I drove all the way out to the west end to get the fricken thing as part of Brave Fencer Musashi (yes, I bought the game for the demo I was that excited for it - to this day I have not bothered to play past the first stage of BFM =p).

BUT to get back on topic I have no interest in any more forms of Rock Band/Guitar Hero rhythm games.  I had my fun with Guitar Hero III and Rock Band 1 and 2.  The extra songs added weekly are just a money drain and I have far too many games I have in my backlog (re: Brave Fencer Musashi) to bother with them.  I figure if by some miraculous reason I never have to work again, I would have plenty to do for YEARS without getting bored with just the stuff I already have and never got to, or from rewatching stuff in my collection.  Man the personal shit I collect is just too mindboggling sometimes when I think about it... and a little sad too lol.  Oh well, that's just the way I am I guess. =p  anyways I've digressed too much now.

Jay Sep 9, 2009

I've never had Guitar Hero or Rock Band but I must admit this is making me sorely tempted. I have neither the money nor space for the controllers but, hey, it's the Beatles. I know a few people already through the game and the reports are nothing but massively positive.

Carl Sep 9, 2009

Launch day GOT.

It's been a very long time since I've bought a game on launch day... SO long ago that I can't even remember the last time it happened.

Side topic since I haven't tried any online Rockbanding yet: I'm curious about multiplayer in general if you can join and play with specific remote players...  Like if we wanted to play with other STC'ers of course.

Seeing as how I've only just jumped on the Rock Band-wagon (picked up the first game as well, and fessed up for the export licensing key), I think it'll be some time before I decide to give the Beatles a go.

But the great thing about being late to the party are the insane mark-downs on these titles.  Even after just a year, I'm seeing copies new and used of RB2 for dirt-cheap.  I was able to pick up RB1 for only eight bucks, and I already see many of the pre-Metallica Guitar Hero titles in the sub $20 category.

The extra songs added weekly are just a money drain and I have far too many games I have in my backlog (re: Brave Fencer Musashi) to bother with them.

Man, I was just thinking of firing up Brave Fencer Musashi again - for what would probably be the fourth time.  Say, I wonder how receptive allyourbaseare would be in making it the next "STC Gaming Club" title to play through? smile

Works for me!  I'll put it up for vote for the next time.

Seeing as how I only own about eight games at this point, something tells me I'll be sitting the next one out. wink

longhairmike Sep 9, 2009

aside from the snes days, i usually end up buying 10 or fewer games per system. Shana's GBA/DS pokemon collection doesn't count cause i will never touch another pokemon game again.

The production values here are the highest of any band/hero game, and Apple Corps has put a LOT of archival photos, videos, and bonus material in here.
Story mode is very slick and enjoyable.

The Beatles Rockband, Wii version.
My friend code is 3733-6596-8989.

Just throwing it out there, even though more people will probably be online with the 360 or PS3 version instead.  Wish all games with online play could be cross-platform and open to players across all consoles.

I'll be warming the bleachers. That game is tough to find by my reckoning nowadays and I didn't buy it when it first came out. sad

wow, you're on the wii?
if you ever decide to get abbey's road album, wii will probably not gonna get (16 minutes or so) medley track, because wii's system doesn't support packs and this is the only way to get it on 360/ps3(as a full album purchase).
I wonder if hmx will implement it somehow for those who are going to purchase all of the tracks from abbey's road.

Okay, last off-topic post (I promise!).  Goozex has 6 copies available for trade last time I checked, which was seconds before this post.  500 points ($25, or actually trading a game worth 500+ points).  The only caveat is that they're either disc-only copies or disc+manual.

Shoe Sep 10, 2009

There's several copies of Musashi with case, manual, and demo on ebay right now, going for about $30-$40.

...I'd imagine a DigiCube copy of the soundtrack will be a little harder to locate, but the game itself is still pretty easy to get.

10 years from now though, who knows....
