Soundtrack Central The best classic game music and more

Adam Corn Jan 1, 2010

Now that the new year has begun let's have a look at everybody's favorite game soundtracks from the past year.  Any album release from 2009 is eligible, whether CD or MP3, original soundtrack or arranged, official or doujin/fan production.  (No game rips though - only album releases.)

Selections can be submitted or altered anytime before the poll expiration date by clicking the "Answer Poll" link.  Please select your answers from the auto-complete list if it appears as you type, otherwise enter your original selections.  Results will be weighted this time - 1st place votes receive twice as many points as 10th place votes, with those in between scaled accordingly.

Adam Corn Jan 1, 2010 (edited Dec 27, 2010)

1. Street Fighter IV Original Soundtrack
2. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles The Crystal Bearers Original Soundtrack
3. SimAnimals Original Videogame Score
4. Shatter Official Videogame Soundtrack
5. Viva Pinata Original Soundtrack
6. Monster Hunter 3 Original Soundtrack

For comparison's sake, here are the ones that didn't make the cut for me:
Akumajo Dracula Judgement Original Soundtrack, Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts Original Soundtrack, Biohazard 5 Original Soundtrack, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles ~Echoes of Time~ Original Soundtrack, Final Fantasy XI The Star Onions ~Sanctuary~, Lord of Vermilion Original Soundtrack, Sonic World Adventure Original Soundtrack, Spore Hero Original Soundtrack, Trine Original Soundtrack, Ys I&II Chronicles Original Sound Track, Ys Seven Original Soundtrack

Edit:  Looking back a year later, I probably would have included Ys I&II Chronicles OST in my top ten list.  It falls short of other Ys arranged albums in some areas (the rock tracks and the few orchestral ones) but the acoustic and New Age pieces really grew on me over the following year, especially the ones for the under-appreciated Ys II.

Cedille Jan 1, 2010

1. Persona 3 Portable Original Soundtrack - Quantity issue. Meguro on auto pilot. But good.
2. Do-Don-Pachi Dai-Fukkatsu Original Sound Track - Basiscape members are at best when they work with Namiki. This is another proof.
3. BlazBlue Original Soundtrack ~Consumer Edition~ - I don't like Ishiwatari otherwise but this one is good.
4. Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny Original Soundtrack
5. Tokimeki Memorial 4 Original Soundtrack
6. Oboro Muramasa Original Soundtrack

So tired now that I even can't mention 4 more.

Jodo Kast Jan 1, 2010

1. Do-Don-Pachi Dai-Ou-Jou Arrange Album
2. Lord of Vermilion Original Soundtrack
3. Akumajo Dracula Judgment Original Soundtrack
4. Muscle Spark
5. Ys I&II Chronicles Original Sound Track
6. Ys Seven Original Sound Track
7. Metroid Metal - Varia Suite
8. Do-Don-Pachi Dai-Fukkatsu Original Sound Track
9. Ketsui Kizunajigokutachi Arrange Album
10. Deathsmiles Premium Arrange Album ~ Manabu Namiki Selection

I copied the names directly from vgmdb.net. Here are the ones that didn't make it (but are still quite good):

Memento mori, Summoning of Spirits: An Arrangement of Music from Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Symphonia, Mega Man Remix Album by ilp0, Brandish -The Dark Revenant- Original Soundtrack, Brandish Original Sound Track ~FM TOWNS & Renewal~, Violin de Hiitemita ep2 ~ Maou no Gyakushuu / Scream no Hito.

And there's one more from 2009 that I haven't heard yet (that's important to me): BLAZT DEVIL CARNIVAL

My first pick from 2009, the DAI-OU-JOU arrange album, is what I consider transcendent. It goes way beyond the original soundtrack and far surpassed my expectations. The line-up of arrangers is first class and that's what prompted me to shell out the big bucks; there was no question in my mind as to whether it would be good or not.

Adam Corn Jan 1, 2010

For the record, I'll be tweaking the album titles on occasion (basically to what they will be on this site) so don't worry if a few posted titles wind up changing slightly.

Cedille Jan 1, 2010

Thanks. That helps a lot. One trivial thing, though, there seems no official space between Oboro and muramasa (it's totally fine to have an unofficial title, per se).

THIS IS THE SOURCE.

Adam Corn Jan 1, 2010

Yeah there is so much variation in these romanized titles it's hard to choose one to go with.  I'm trying to strike a balance between accuracy, readability and frequency of use, the latter two leading to the space in "Oboro Muramasa".

Anyway let's see everybody's picks. smile

Angela Jan 2, 2010

1. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Original Soundtrack from the Video Game
2. Gyakuten Kenji Original Soundtrack
3. Street Fighter IV Original Soundtrack
4. The Adventures of Duane & Brando - LP of Devastation
5. Cave Song ~Compilation Image Song Album~
6. Metroid Metal - Varia Suite
7. Shatter Official Videogame Soundtrack
8. Lord of Vermilion Original Soundtrack
9. Ys Seven Original Sound Track
10. Yuusha 30 Sou Original Soundtrack

I'll scrounge up words for these entries in the future.  Shame, though, that game rips aren't applicable here -- otherwise Punch-Out!! would've taken top rank.  No other VGM-related score got more playtime in '09; the Major Circuit & Get Up! themes alone were listened to on a religiously frequent basis.

Raziel Jan 3, 2010

I posted the best ten, but when I was coming up with the list, I did a mistake, and because of that instead of ten I got eleven. Hope it's readable enough!

The best/characteristic track of the album is in the brackets.

1. Persona 3 Portable Original Soundtrack ("Time")

I echo Cedille's sentiments, but on top of that the album really connects with me for some reason. It's a nostalgic trip back to Persona 3, and at the same time there's a sense of intimacy I feel with the album. Really hard to describe. Even if you don't have the same pull as me, it's still a very good album featuring Meguro, while keeping it safe, having fun to the fullest. If it wasn't for the short duration, I'd say it completely wipes the floor with P3 and P4, but alas, can't judge when it's very short compared to P3 & P4 OST's.

2. Shin Megami Tensei STRANGE JOURNEY Original Soundtrack ("Scepter of Justice")

When I first saw the trailer, I was immediately positive of the soundtrack, unlike every corner of the internet where people screamed because there were no electric guitars. It's cold, somewhat menacing, but there's touches of poignancy here and there. It's Meguro, people. I, for one, applaud Meguro for taking this direction.

3. Street Fighter IV Original Soundtrack ("Overpass Stage -Tokyo-")

To be perfectly honest, I've never been a fan of Street Fighter, game or music-wise. But this soundtrack puts a new coat of paint, paint made of fast-paced electronic beats infused with excellent synthwork. The original tracks are clearly the winners here, even though the arrangements are no slouch either, it's just that the originals weren't THAT good to begin with. Have to admit that Fukasawa's rendition of Guile's Theme really shines, though. Fukasawa shows promise!

4. Persona Original Soundtrack CD ("Sebec")

Oh, what a sad fanboy I am. It is one of the weakest efforts by him, but still manages to grip me. The thing that hurts it the most is the awkward choice to keep both old and new, yet doing that such way that neither of them is really good. It's like a woman who has found a new partner, yet clings to her ex. But as I said somewhere in the other thread, even Meguro's weakest work is awesome. The new tracks are pretty good, and as a stand-alone it's much more pleasant than in-game. The arrangements are a bit hit and miss, though. Deva Yuga is a mess, Persona isn't as dramatic. Fortunately, the new stuff ("Sebec" amends the negative points) is good enough for the album to reach the fourth place.

5. Planetary Pieces: Sonic World Adventure Original Soundtrack ("Super Sonic vs. Perfect Dark Gaia")

Again, I must begin how I'm not familiar with the series' music. But this is outstanding! World music, jazz, electronic, even a bit of rock, traditional orchestral = musical heaven. AND it's all very accessible. I think if I'm going to dive into the back catalog of Sonic music, the old classics have a serious contender as far as I'm concerned. All composers did their best on this one, that's for sure, because if you come up with three discs of music that keeps up the pace through the run, it has to be good.

6. 11eyes Original Sound Track & Arrange Sound Track ("Look, My Sword [Heart] Is As Yet Unbroken")

Talk about a surprise! I wasn't aware of the composer, but now I know that Shoichiro Sakamoto is a promising star in the VGM world. The original stuff combined with frantic arrangements = heaven. There's piano solos, extremely synthy rock, synthy pop songs. It doesn't stray far from the sound attributed to visual novel scene, but it's one of the more refined albums I've seen from that scene.

7. 7th Dragon Original Soundtrack ("Dungeon - Jungle Navigation")

The reason why I took notice of the soundtrack was because of the synth-rock goodness of "Battlefield - Swords Bursting", and while it was more of an exception than a rule, 7th Dragon still offered excellent chamber music imbued with ethnic touches. While many of the battle themes aren't as exciting, they transform into complete awesomeness in the chiptune versions. Yes, the last two disc feature chiptune renditions of the soundtrack. What's even better, both versions complement each other nicely and often convey different moods!

8. Demon's Souls Soundtrack CD ("Tower Knight")

Demon's Souls is an abstract beast. The reliance on few soulless instruments, somewhat campy "choir", lack of melodies. The ambiance the whole package creates is wonderful, and even better, it fits into the context. This has the potential to grow on me a lot!

9. Ryu ga Gotoku 3 Original Soundtrack ("Lyricism without tears")

"Cool". Yup, that's the best word for describing the series' music. It's aggressive, wicked and gritty. This music evokes images like someone's face kissing the asphalt, or Kazuma beating a thug with a baseball. Ryu ga Gotoku 3 injects some emotionality into series, as evidenced by the guitar solos. While Hidenori Shoji's contributions are top-grade material, I'm not so fond of the tracks other members bring to the table, and the arrangements of older tracks lack the punch (what did they to do End Point?). Still, with tracks like "Fly", "Pure Malice", "Lyricism without tears", it's one hell of a ride. I look forward to Ryu ga Gotoku 4.

10. Let's TAP SOUNDTRACK ("Milky Way Rendezvous")

It's party time! The reason why it's such an awesome album is because of Shoes and yam, the star composers of the album. They've composed one of the more memorable electronic tunes I've heard from VGM this year (take that, Cave arrange albums!). Not to mention Azusa Chiba whose sole contribution "Milky Way Rendezvous" made him one of my favourite artists right away. Too bad she's stuck in Basiscape.

11. Star Ocean The Last Hope Original Soundtrack ("Like The Wind")

I know it's regarded as Sakuraba on auto-pilot, but I still like it. It may have something to do with the fact that I'm unfamiliar with his previous works on Star Ocean, but the nice balance between orchestral and progressive rock won me over. While the dark bombastic choir pieces are the most forgettable of the bunch, I do enjoy a few of them, and the darker side of the soundtrack gives it a more distinctive flavour.

Oboro Muramasa & Crystal Chronicles are potential TOP candidates, too bad they were released in the end of the year, so I haven't had much time to digest them. Other good stuff:

Monster Hunter Tri ("Moonquake / Nabardeus")

While it didn't slip into my TOP, it's really a magnificent album. Maybe because I haven't had the time to listen to it closely, but the feel-good seaside tracks and majestic battle tracks are cut above your average RPG album.

Tales of Knighthood: Sonic and the Black Knight Original Soundtrax ("Misty Lake")

It's a good album, but can't contend with the heavy-hitter Planetary Pieces. I would've liked more tracks like "Misty Lake", "Blacksmith", hell, more violin in general, but both sides of the pond manage to create an enjoyable work.

Genso Suikoden Tierkreis Original Soundtrack ("The Plain and the Sky")

Overreliance on the main theme and many forgettable tracks is my main qualm about the soundtrack, but the main theme is pretty good, and Suikoden has always featured nice ethnic music (except for Suikoden III). I'm not digging the DS synth either. There's something about it that feels unnatural.

Silent Hill Shattered Memories ("Always On My Mind")

While "Always On My Mind" is jaw-droppingly good, the other McGlynn songs pale in comparison (Hell Frozen Rain has grown on me, that's true), and the original stuff, while improvement over the disappointment of Homecoming, doesn't leave a lasting impression. Yet again, this one's a potential growner, and may fare better in a future retrospective.

Tekken 6 Soundtrack ("G -Blast ver.")

The second CD doesn't do much for me, and it's too much of Basiscape doing it's own thing than keeping true to Tekken roots. The first disc has some rocking stuff. I just need to listen to this more for a final verdict, although I'm not sure it has the chance of infiltrating my TOP. Maybe if Go Shiina was the sole composer...

TOP 3 STINKERS:

No comments besides the fact that they're vomit-inducing or masterpieces of genericness.

1. Quantum of Solace Original Score From The Video Game
2. Shin Sangoku Musou Multi Raid Original Soundtrack
3. inFamous: Original Soundtrack from the Video Game

Other CDs good for frisbee: Megami Ibunroku Devil Survivor Original Remix Sound Track, Order of War Original Video Game Soundtrack, Gradius House Remix

TOP Artist

Shoji Meguro

What did you expect? I just love this guy, and he is only rivaled by kt2 in my opinion. Three albums, one of them a tad weak, but ultimately it was an excellent year to be a Shoji Meguro fan.

Honourable mentions:

Go Shiina  - I've heard only 4 tracks by him this year (Tales of VS., Tekken 6), but that was enough to give him the title of one of the best artists of the year.

Azusa Chiba - His "Milky Way Rendezvouz" was enough for me to add her to my favourites. Her contributions on Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu were excellent as well, too bad the other artists there weren't that great. Unfortunately, her small tracks on Tekken 6 fell into the "BASISCAPE" camp. hmm Still, an awesome artist, and I hope she has a bigger breakthrough in the future.

Now for Last.fm statistics for this year:

Huh.  Just wanted to say that the turnout for these recent polls (including the Favorite movies of 2009 and my own Top VGM Songs of 2009) have been surprisingly low.

Movies I can see reaching to a smaller demographic, and maybe my top songs poll was too minutia-based to bother answering...... but even this one?  Has Soundtrack Central simply decided to stop listening to VGM soundtracks altogether last year?

Or is everyone just suffering from end-of-year poll fatigue?  All the same, the drop of participants from 2008's polls have been substantial.

In my case, when it comes to soundtracks, I haven't listened to anything "new" this past year. Case in point, the only soundtrack I purchased was the Capcom Special Selection: Rockman DASH 2 and well, it may have had the two best/most important songs from the game on it but it wouldn't top any favorite lists. Additionally, that music has been around since 2000 - so again it's not really "new."

TerraEpon Jan 6, 2010

Personally, I just hate to try and rank things most of time. I *always* forget something, and just can never think of favorites as it were...it's just no in my brain.

Dragon God Jan 6, 2010 (edited Jan 6, 2010)

1. Ninja Blade Original Soundtrack
To me this is easily the best OST. It's a very intense and emotional soundtrack.

2. Ys I&II Chronicles Original Sound Track
Finally something to top Yonemitsu's Perfect Collection arrangements.

3. Senko no Ronde DUO Original Soundtrack
The lastest Yack has so much good stuff it gets the bar way too high.

4. Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu Original Soundtrack
A very strong effort by Namiki & co. Stage 5 alone makes it worth it.

5. Let's TAP SOUNDTRACK
Another winner here. Has all the good stuff to keep you pumped up.

6. Mushihimesama Double Arrange
#1 Arrange album for me. I simply love these All-Star arrange albums.

7. Dodonpachi Dai-ou-jou Premium Arrange
Yay for Kikuta and Yamashita.

8. Ketsui Kizunajigokutachi Arrange Album
Hayama and Virt rocked the house here in particular.

9. Deathsmiles Premium Arrange Album ~ Manabu Namiki Selection
Namiki's extra track was simply full of awesome and win.

10. Technictix Remix Vol.3
Just check the remixes by Yano, Yasui and Saso.

Yeah I'm hoping the regular posters and knowledgeable VGM listeners here are just taking time mulling over their answers.  I've been looking forward to seeing everyone's picks.

To any who find it hard to make "final" picks, remember you can go back and modify your answers any time before the deadline.  I made some improvements to the poll code that make it very easy to do so just by clicking the Answer Poll link again.  (In fact I've just added the very pretty Viva Pinata Original Soundtrack to my own list.)

And for those who visit the forums but don't post that often, please note that your poll answers are anonymous to all (except to me as administrator).  Posting your picks publicly to this thread is an extra, optional step, so don't be shy about participating. smile

Lastly to Raziel, that is a fantastic year-end summary you have put together.  Wow!

This is me, at least. Also, I find that I can mentally hash out what I want to write while at work, but I come home to type it in, and either it doesn't sound very good in retrospect, or I burn out mid-post and start cutting things short. I'll give it a shot tonight.

Money's been tight for me this year, so my purchases have been exceedingly minimal. Not that it matters much, the bulk of my soundtrack collection is basically me playing catch-up with a bunch of older, out of print stuff; I rarely buy new.

That's my excuse, anyway.

Actually, same here - didn't even think of that. Spent about 3/4 of the year unemployed. Also, my money started going towards buying books and football cards when I did start working.

James O Jan 7, 2010

My excuse?

VGM like anything else I listen to falls into one of three categories.

1) I like it.
2) I don't like it.
3) Meh.

Doesn't make much for a good top 10 list and I rarely think of long eloquent posts to go along with making such a list because that would involve me having to remember what it was I listened to 9 months back.  =p

Nope, not into doing ANY rankings or polls on any site, as even within my own opinions the list would be highly subjective to even *daily* changes in mood.

Any list I would compile for myself today would change by the next day and be in constant flux, so why attempt to pin it down.  It'd be like a disappearing photograph that requires way more time, energy, effort, and analysis than it'd be worth to capture.

2. BlazBlue Original Soundtrack ~Consumer Edition~
3. ChipTuned Rockman
4. Akumajo Dracula Judgment Original Soundtrack
5. Street Fighter IV Original Soundtrack
6. Shatter Official Videogame Soundtrack

Part of my problem is that I usually listen to soundtracks the same way I watch movies or play games - a few years after everyone else. Any timeliness I have is purely coincidental.

While ChipTuned isn't in the same class as the Zero or ZX albums, the end result was much stronger than I had expected it to be. Shatter isn't the sort of music I'd turn on while doing housework or whatever, but it's very soothing.

The other albums listed aren't left-field choices for me by any means. I'm kind of predictable that way.

7. Tilde Game Music Collection Vol.9 - Asuka 120%
8. Senko no Ronde Duo Soundtrack
9. ChipTuned Rockman
10. Legend of Joe Musashi: Shinobi Music Collection

I decided to leave out all 'fan-made' albums with regards to my selections.

8. Shatter Official Videogame Soundtrack
9. Do-Don-Pachi Dai-Fukkatsu Original Sound Track
10. Technictix Remix Vol.3

My list this year was dominated by CAVE. Aside from that, we have some nice retro stylings by Koshiro, some awesome atmospheric and action themes by the team at GEM Impact, and some electronica music, such as Shatter and Street Fighter IV. Not a bad year at all. Looking forward to 2010.

Bernhardt Jan 12, 2010 (edited Jan 12, 2010)

01) Sonic World Adventure ~ Planetary Pieces

If I only purchased one soundtrack last year (and I practically did), this'd be it!

I dig the town and night stage themes, and I listen to the former a lot when I want to relax or concentrate, and the latter, when I'm driving around town at night, and the day time stages, I sometimes listen to those on the expressway, but not too often. Still, this's pretty much the only soundtrack I got last year, with a few other honorable mentions...

02) Oboro Muramasa

Always can use some Asian flair!

03) Let's Tap!

A fun dance-beat-style soundtrack.

04) Radirgy Noah and Senko no Ronde Duo and Mamonoro Arrange

Pretty standard Supersweep techno, still good stuff; I'm going to have to listen to them more in order to draw quality conclusions...

05) Sonic Vs. the Black Knight

Am I crazy for liking this hybrid of authentic-styled medieval music, and heavy metal/hard rock? Well, then again, I've pretty much just described my taste in heavy metal/hard rock in general...

...

Haven't listened to either of Blaz Blue or Street Fighter IV...I should probably get on those, eh?

Where did you get those? I've e-mailed VGMWorld about 5 times in the past three months asking if they would order them and a few others for me. I know that Kahori has had medical issues lately but I'm frustrated that I haven't received a reply by now. There's a couple of Wavemaster releases that I want, also.

Herrkotowski Jan 13, 2010

All of those can be found on Amazon.co.jp. Just search using the catalog number and you should be able to find them. It's quite easy to order from them as well, but they only do Express shipping overseas.

Cedille Jan 14, 2010

I think the possible best thing we can do is to encourage SuperSweep to let CD Japan and Play-Asia to stock their soundtracks. I talked with Hosoe and he seemed to be interested in dealing with Play-Asia.

Thanks for the responses thus far, it's nice to see people participating. smile  I've moved the poll results date back a couple days through the weekend so I can polish up the code, so those of you who would like to submit your picks or revise your current ones feel free to do so.  Am planning to add Monster Hunter 3 and The Crystal Bearers to my own list.

Jon Turner Jan 18, 2010

1. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles The Crystal Bearers Original Soundtrack
2. Monster Hunter 3 Original Soundtrack

I am in definite agreement with those two; they definitely deserve my titles for being the best game scores of 2009.  And Adam, is it OK if I post the first review for these two?  I LOOOOOOVE these scores enough to give them a review.

Shattered Memories' score is amazing, too; so is the game, if you haven't picked it up, I suggest you do so; it's one of the better 3rd party games on the Wii, and if Crystal Bearers doesn't do everything perfectly, it's leaps and bounds above Dragon Quest Swords by far.  The soundtracks for both are, of course, phenomenal.

Sure.  Actually I've been working on my own reviews for both titles over the past week, but second opinions are always welcome. smile

Finally updated the code for the poll system and got the results posted.  My apologies for the delay!  The updated tallying code takes into account not just how many people voted for an item but how highly they ranked it as well, so I think it's a good adjustment. smile

I find the results interesting (in my strange world), largely because of how it mirrors 'regular' music. I typically don't like music that is regarded as 'the best'. In this case, SF IV ranked #1 and I don't like it. (Of course, I like stuff I regard as 'the best'. That would be a rare case indeed of someone not enjoying music they considered 'the best'. This might be possible amongst split personalities.)
