Adam Corn May 2, 2013

Added the July 27 Baltimore show XLord mentioned as well July 25 Philadelphia.

Ramza May 9, 2013

Saw the Philly show last year, loved it so much I'm tempted to go out again this year.

Boonage Jun 7, 2013

I attended the Atlanta concert last night. They debuted at least 3 new pieces, Link's Awakening, Spirit Tracks, and Dragon Roost. Only 3 of the pieces were previously recorded on the 25th Anniversary CD, The Wind Waker Symphonic Movement, Gerudo Valley, and Twilight Princess Symphonic Movement.

So glad that Dragon Roost has made it into Season 2. That was sorely missing from the Season 1 concert. I'm going to the Philly concert this year since it has Season 2 while my local area is just getting Season 1 again.

Added the August 9th and 10th shows in Newark to the concert listing at the top.

Whaaa, does that mean no 25th Anniversary Medley?  It's good that they're adding new material but I'd be pretty bummed not to hear that piece.  It was fantastic on the album!

No Skyward Sword "Ballad of the Goddess" as well?  Or have they added extra material for that one?

Boonage Jun 18, 2013 (edited Jun 18, 2013)

I didn't attend the first season concert and I haven't played all the Zelda games, but I'm very familiar with the 25th Anniversary CD. I distinctly remember hearing those 3 pieces that were on the CD. There was some material from Skyward Sword (I remember seeing the video footage), but I can't exactly remember what music.

XLord007 Jul 26, 2013

Went to the Season 2 concert in Philly last night. They swapped out whatever used to be in the beginning with suites from Link's Awakening and Spirit Tracks, and the three encores have been changed to two new encores: Dragon Roost Island (not a very good arrangement, IMO) and a suite from Skyward Sword (very good). The four movement Symphony in the center and the Gerudo Valley pieces remain from Season 1. Still a great show, and well worth seeing if you haven't already.

Adam Corn Jul 26, 2013 (edited Jul 28, 2013)

Added the shows for Mexico City (is that a first for a major VGM concert?) and San Jose to the opening post.

Cool to hear the reports from the shows.  Also cool to hear they've created a full suite for Skyward Sword, judging by how great the short arrangement on the first album was!  (Edit: Ah, so just a medley.  Still glad to hear they arranged one though.)

Do they give out concert programs at the shows?  If anybody could write out the exact program I'd love to see it.

Maybe I'm not using the right word. Sorry, I never took music theory. The Skyward Sword arrangement was around five minutes of various themes from the game. Does that make it a medley instead of suite? Either way it was good.

The programs at the Philly concert didn't have much on the Zelda show. They talk more about the producers and conductor than they do about the actual music in the tiny two page segment on the show. I'm going to the Baltimore Season 1 show tonight. I'll let you know if those programs are any better.

TerraEpon Jul 27, 2013

Yes, that would indeed be a medley. A suite would be more like individual pieces separated into separate movements.

Adam Corn Jul 27, 2013

Just the set list would be great. smile

Vaeran Jul 28, 2013 (edited Jul 28, 2013)

Whoops, I had this tab open for a couple days, intending to reply, but never actually got around to it. Anyway, I was also at the Philly concert (my first one of these) and it was a blast! The area had been enduring weeks of sweltering, humid weather, which then miraculously broke for a few wonderfully cool days; perfect for the outdoor venue of the Mann Center. I couldn't have asked for better.

The setlist, for the curious:

1. Overture
2. Link's Awakening Medley
3. Spirit Tracks Medley
4. Symphony Movement I: Ocarina of Time
5. Symphony Movement II: The Wind Waker
(Intermission)
6. Gerudo Valley
7. Symphony Movement III: Twilight Princess
8. Symphony Movement IV: A Link to the Past / Finale
9. Encore 1: Dragon Roost Island
10. Encore 2: Skyward Sword Medley

The WW and TP medleys, as well as Gerudo Valley, were identical to the tracks on that 25th Anniversary CD that came with Skyward Sword. There was a really cute moment before the WW movement where the conductor paused to present to us a replica of the Wind Waker baton, which she then used to conduct the piece.

I'd break down the rest of the medleys (except Spirit Tracks, because I have no familiarity with that game's music aside from the sweet train theme), but I'm just so terribly lazy. The Link's Awakening section was a delight, as was the luxurious treatment given the ALTTP Hyrule Castle theme, which is always a favorite of mine. I did feel bad for the guy sitting behind me, who was telling his companion during the intermission that he really wanted to hear something from Majora's Mask. Nope! Completely snubbed. Oh well. Great concert overall.

I went to the Baltimore Season 1 concert last night, and this is the best I've seen them do so far, mostly because of the indoor venue's ability to capture the sound better than the two outdoor venues I saw this show at previously. The program wasn't any better than the Philly one, but here's the set list IIRC:

01. Overture
02. Dungeon Themes Medley (LTTP, Zelda II, Zelda I)
03. Kakariko Village
04. Ocarina Song Medley
05. Symphony of The Goddesses Prelude
06. Symphony of the Goddesses Movement I: Ocarina of Time
07. Symphony of the Goddesses Movement II: Wind Waker
-Intermission-
08. Great Fairy Fountain
09. Symphony of the Goddesses Movement III: Twilight Princess
10. Symphony of the Goddesses Movement IV: LTTP
11. Symphony of the Goddesses Finale
12. Encore I: Ballad of the Wind Fish
13. Encore II: Gerudo Valley
14. Encore III: Majora's Mask Medley

Ah, lucky! The original Zelda underworld theme was the one piece I really wanted to hear that didn't get played at Philly.

I went to the Philly show too.  I thought the Dragon Roost Island arrangement was pretty good.  The Skyward Sword suite was a little too barebones for me but it was really nice as well.

Wish they kept Majora's Mask suite in there, along with the other pieces they played in the original concert, like the four boss themes.

The Link's Awakening suite was nice too but it didn't get the golden treatment that Twilight Princess, Wind Waker, or A Link to the Past received.  Of all the suites though, Ocarina of Time to me remains the weakest.

EDIT:  Looks like Bmore was the show to go to actually!

Sweet! This will be my third Zelda concert this year!

Adam Corn Oct 26, 2013

Added the following shows to the concert list:

10/26 Columbus OH
10/27 Cincinnati OH
12/03 San Antonio TX
12/05 Guadalajara, Mexico

Those of you wanting to hear Zelda music in concert anytime soon may want to look into these next several shows.  From an interview with Jason Michael Paul at iNintendoWiiU:

Next year we will be on a hiatus for the Zelda tour. I will touring my new
show rePlay Symphony of Heroes www.replay-symphony.com. We should be coming with something
special for Zelda fans in 2015.

He also mentions that he would love to record a concert CD.  Wish Nintendo would feel the same way!

Taking a year off? dang.  I hope they can make it back to Edmonton for the Second Quest version soon. sad

XLord007 Nov 23, 2013 (edited Nov 23, 2013)

I attended the Second Quest concert in Baltimore this past Thursday. Still as good as ever, but a few changes:

-The original conductor (the Irish woman) had a child recently, so they replaced her with one of the orchestrators (the wife of the Chad guy who usually goes on stage with Jeron Moore). She was all smiles and friendly, but didn't do the symphony lecture that Ms. Noone did, and they also cut the silly part about the Wind Waker baton.

-With the exception of the brief Wind Waker scene in the overture, all of the other Wind Waker footage is now from Wind Waker HD, and boys does it look lovely on that big screen.

-Unlike the last time I saw the Second Quest version in Philly, there were three encores instead of two: they had the same Dragon Roost Island and Ballad of the Goddess encores plus the Majora's Mask encore that was originally only in Season 1. They said they got too much hate mail for taking it out, so they put it back for Season 2 as well. The audience approved of this change. smile
