Long years after Falcom's departure from the console mainstream, the classic Japanese adventure developer may be back. At an event dubbed the "Ys Fair" in Akihabara today, Falcom announced two new titles in their marquee action RPG series for an unknown platform: Ys Seven, due in fall, and Ys I & II Chronicles, due in summer. Both games were represented by nothing more than image artwork.

Although third parties have been releasing console ports of Falcom games for years (the upcoming Legacy of Ys Books 1 And 2 is one such example), Falcom itself recently returned to non-PC platforms after a decade-and-change absence. Since 2007's Gurumin, the company has experienced wild success on PSP, primarily through their Sora no Kiseki series of RPGs. Falcom's first PSP-exclusive title, a remake of the legendary dungeon-crawler Brandish, will release this month.

Combine Falcom's strong PSP support with the CERO rating shown on the Ys Fair flyer above -- the organization only rates console games -- as well as the fact that screens of Ys Seven and Chronicles will be exclusively revealed in next month's issue of Dengeki PlayStation, and a clear pattern begins to emerge. Will Ys Seven and Ys I & II Chronicles wind up on PSP? We think it's likely.

Maybe they have the budget to hire Kushiro and Yonemitsu?!? ( I say this every time)

Also - an 'Ys Fair'?!?

Good news. The number of ports and remakes of Ys I & II is getting a bit ridiculous, but I'm glad Ys VII is now dated. Rather than the return of past veterans, I'll be looking forward to more goodness from Hayato Sonoda and co. for the sequel. They've done a great job with all sorts of post-2003 Falcom games like Ys Origin and Legend of Heroes VI so I'd be very happy to see them return here.

Yes and no...I definitely thought they did a good job on recent releases with some very interesting compositions...but arrangement wise, nothing even close to the T-16 arrangements (and Perfect Collections)  for Ys 1, 2, 3 and 4...Sorry, there's a magic there that just hasn't been re-attained.  I mean, look at all the re-packaging of Felghana and Complete releases, where someone  has inserted the T16 soundtracks, and foregone the included re-arrangements..I know this is a matter of style preference, but someone over at Falcom surely has an opinion here.  I would suspect it's not a matter of cost (I mean Yonemitsu did some Wild Arms arrangements not too long ago), but perhaps in house preference for something different.  Kushiro is another story, I'm not sure why he has not been involved with Falcom, he does not appear to be doing all that much these days.  And the other thing is, they keep re-releasing Ys 1 and 2...Perhaps with the re-release of Ys on the Wii, the soundtrack style that was so successful, will be noticed, again.

Whatever they do, I'll definitely take a look.  The games are pure class.  And I've played them all!

I have to admit that I haven't heard many of the new arranged albums, mainly because of negative reviews I've heard about them. I tend to like Yukihiro Jindo's arrangements, but some of them take an overly orthodox approach.

As for Yuzo Koshiro, I think he still feels hostility towards Falcom over the credit / royalty issues. Even then, I can't really think of examples where they have hired composers outside their sound team. I'd like to see him work on the series again though.

I thought I remembered hearing something about this, but not the specifics. Was this presumed by the fan base, or did he reveal a concern at some point, (in interview?)

Chris Mar 9, 2009

I'm not sure the exact interview, but he went into specifics once. Specifically he left after learning he had no royalties for his compositions and feeling disappointed about his compositions being arranged without his supervision. He especially felt Ryo Yonemitsu's TurboGrafx-16 arrangements betrayed his original intention. He also has said that he has no contact with Falcom even though he occasionally gets together with staff members who worked there at the same time. Even now, he seems a tad bitter.

That's definitely interesting to hear.  From a business stand point, I can completely understand Yuzo's feelings.  He probably didn't even get a thank you...Come to think of it I never saw his name listed in the game credits, just JDK.  That clouded Yonemitsu's involvement as well.  It is a shame however... I enjoyed Yonemitsu's arrangements, which raised the bar in production values.  Wasn't aware of the politics.

News of Ys 7 is great, I'll buy that.
But another I & II Chronicle? Cripes...

Ys VII could be cool, but I'd much rather see it released on PSN/XBLA/WW than PSP, so I hope it's on one of those services.

I think the TG-16 version does credit Kushiro.  I have to play the Wii VC version to its end, but when I had the TG-16, I remember his name specifically mentioned.  It was not "Sound Team JDK."

I also appreciate Yomenitsu's arrangements, but musician, like other creative personalities, often have different opinions about how their works should be done.

Having heard the battle tracks on Etrian Odyssey I and II, that is what reminded me of Ys music.

Great news about Ys VII. To my knowledge, Falcom usually provides composer info in the game credits, just not the CDs. Most companies stopped doing that after the 16-bit era, but not Falcom.

Long-time fans rejoiced today when Falcom announced on their investors page that Ys VII (not "Ys Seven") will go multiplatform in 2010. Meaning, most likely, a PC version like people wanted from the beginning. smile If you hadn't seen, the official Falcom boards were on fire with some pretty angry fans over Ys Seven being a PSP-only title. Will probably have higher quality character design, ala Ys I and II Chronicles, as opposed to the slightly kiddy Ys Seven art. Kudos to Falcom for listening to the fans.

I know it's April Fool's, but this was on their investors page, in a nondescript PDF like every other investor report, so I *highly* doubt it's a prank. It's not really prank material anyway... smile

thats good news i guess. im still sad over the crappy art and subpar graphics for the PSP-version though. i'd prefer the series on PSP in localised form anyway.

I've been waiting for another Falcom game on the PSP. Ys VI was the first game I bought for PSP, and I really enjoyed it despite the horrible load times and some tricky controls (jumping, namely). Also played Gurumin a couple times through and liked that as well. I'd considered importing the Soro no Kiseki games, but having to use guides to walk me through might not be so fun. I love action RPGs though, and the Ys formula does it well.

And another round of SPRING Live concerts by JDK Band

Oh, and Ys Online~The Call of Solum~ is still being developed separately than Ys VII, right?

Good to hear VII is gonna be PC and PSP both though, as the PC versions are always superior to other ports.

They'll be performing new Ys SEVEN music at the Spring 09 concert.

Chris Apr 27, 2009

Well, LoH VII was confirmed to be in the works (along with Vantage Master Portable, Brandish: The Dark Revenant, Zwei 2, and Ys VII) in 2007. Good to see it'll probably be here within the next year, though.

Dais Apr 29, 2009

You guys seen the screenshots for the PSP version of VII?

It's probably the ugliest Ys game outside of the horrible Ys Strategy.

Pellasos Apr 29, 2009

yea, it looks like a DS game. there is no excuse for this.

Pellasos Jul 19, 2009

good stuff.

falcom trailers always hype me up to the max.

Just noticed the story on Famitsu that Oath in Felghana is coming to the Japanese PSP on April 22, 2010.  As with the recent Ys I & II remake, it looks to be a port of the Windows version with a few additions - new voice acting, a content gallery, and BGM selectable from the PC-8801、X68000, and "original" versions.

I would expect the "original" version to be the Oath in Felghana OST.  It's hard to imagine them churning out yet another arranged version for Ys III.
