I have to say I'm not impressed.  I loved the control scheme in Phantom Hourglass, but the poor dungeon design in the regular dungeons and the infuriating time limit in the one well-designed dungeon ruined it for me.  If they can address those concerns, they could have a winner, but there's nothing in this trailer that shows much.

A train? REALLY? Ah, Nintendo.

Idolores Mar 26, 2009 (edited Mar 26, 2009)

The image that I clicked on IGN for the video was of an Ocarina-era link, so naturally I thought a Wii Zelda was in the works or something.

So a train. I feel like I really want to make fun of this, but something tells me that once the reviews come out, I'd be eating my words.

Reminds me of that one prefect from Bully, though. "All aboard the pain train! CHOO CHOO" as he punches you.

I agree with every single thing XLord said.

Also, am I the only one who feels like Nintendo is short-changing the Wii for the DS?  Seriously... if they, at this very moment, stopped making any new DS games, I'd still feel it was a very successful platform and I wouldn't run out of new things to play on it for a really long time.  The Wii, on the other hand, could REALLY have used some sort of big software announcement at this event.

Idolores Mar 26, 2009 (edited Mar 26, 2009)

I hear that. Last Wii game I bought was . . . . Umbrella Chronicles? And before that, Smash Bros. They need more dedicated third party support, I think.

Edit: Is it too late for me to say Nintendo's on the wrong track? tongue:P:P:P

Looks nice to me. Having long given up on the Wii, I'm all for them making more DS games. It's not like the DS has been inundated with quality games in a while. Actually, there are a bunch right now but it's been pretty dry for a while.

Phantom Hourglass, I enjoyed. The only thing in the game I felt that benefitted from the stylus control was the hammer and that was barely in it. The trade-off was having to see more of my hand than actual screen. Not worth it in my opinion when traditional control would have done the job nicely. But I enjoyed the game.

Barely remember it though. Maybe that's not a good sign. Something about a boat...

With this, looks like more of the same. Only he has a cute outfit. How could I not love the train driver uniform? Though, as it's on tracks, is this going to mean even less exploration? Those areas looked pretty bare. I don't know.

I can't see me doing anything other than getting this and liking it though.

heh... nice pun!
I think the train looks cute. I'm pretty certain this was Nintendo's inspiration:

I think Nintendo might have a winner here... especially if it will be a Sim-Zelda, where you can built railroad tracks, stations, ect and open up new areas to explore!

Densha de Zelda.  It seems the target audience for this game is probably 7 year olds, so I'm not surprised most of us will be shrugging this off.  I'll keep playing Etrian Odyssey thanks.

Amazingu Mar 27, 2009

Like Jay said, I can sit here and complain, but I'll be getting this and enjoying it anyway, I'm sure.

I do feel that the Zelda series has gotten afwully gimmicky lately...

I think there still IS going to be a Wii ZELDA game; it's probably just not ready yet.  I don't know whether to be excited or annoyed at this newest DS installment, but we'll see.  I did enjoy Phantom Hourglass, even though I felt it was weaker than TWILIGHT PRINCESS, which, IMO, was one of the best in the series, alongside LINK TO THE PAST and OCARINA OF TIME.

I doubt Nintendo is shortchanging Wii; they said they're going to have new game announcements at this year's E3, but again, I'm keeping my expectations extremely low.  I too want to avoid disappointment.

Wanderer Mar 27, 2009

I haven't been feeling the Zelda love lately. I beat Twilight Princess but the game left very little of an impression on me (and in fact, it's hard to remember it). I got about twenty minutes into the last DS game before giving up entirely. I guess the formula has grown stale.

XLord007 Mar 28, 2009

I'd have to put myself in the "frustrated with Nintendo" bucket.  It's not that I expect every game it releases to be Mario Galaxy, and I did love SSBB, but since SSBB came out a little over a year ago, there's been nothing from Nintendo that I've really cared about, either released or announced.  Don't get me wrong, I am looking forward to Mario & Luigi 3 and Sin & Punishment 2, but there's no "wow" game.  Mario Galaxy and, to a lesser extent, SSBB were "wow" games.  Mario Kart was a pretty big disappointment, and Punch-Out simply doesn't do anything for me.

I think the real difference lies in the fact that Nintendo doesn't do four-year hype cycles anymore.  Now that it's on top of the industry, it doesn't need to keep dangling the promise of the next great game.  At least in the GameCube days, I could point to the next big Nintendo game I thought I would enjoy and say, "that's the next game I really want to play."  Only Metroid Prime 2 really let me down in that regard.  Of course, with no must-play title waiting in the back of my mind, my interest in all things gaming tends to wane.  I want something to be excited about that I can't touch.  I was really excited about RE5 until I played the demo, and while it's a decent game, it's clearly not going to be this year's game for me.

As of right now, I guess I'm just disappointed with the industry in general in that it hasn't given me anything to look forward to.  Sure, there are plenty of great games sitting on my shelves that I could play, but I want that anticipation.  That sweet promise of great things to come.  And while the whole industry has been letting me down on that right now, I place particular blame on Nintendo since it's been stringing us along for a very long time.  The last two "wow" games were SSBB and Mario Galaxy.  SSBB may only be a year old, but this game was announnced back in 2006.  So Nintendo hasn't really announced any "wow" games in three years (with the possible exception of 2007's Wii Fit announcement -- I didn't get much out of it, but it was a damn brilliant announcement).

Anyway, long story short, I want something to be really excited about.  Spirit Tracks ain't gonna cut it.

Well, it seems to me like this is a personal problem, and not the industry's nor Nintendo's fault. A lot of people here (not you in particular) remind me of cranky old men, sitting in their rocking chair and saying "back in my day, games meant something, not like crap today...yadda yadda..."

Well, I'm an original Nintendo kid. I had an NES "back in the day", and sure it was exciting. Today, there are FAR more games released than ever before, and of course you're not going to be as excited when you hear about a game coming out, because

a) you have so many to choose from
b)you're no longer 10
c)you don't have as much time to play games
d)you have other things to worry about

but, despite all that, and despite the fact that I don't have much time to play games and have a large backlog, I still get excited! I was really excited when the new Fire Emblem game for the DS was announced, and I can't wait to play it (might be a long time, but I will play it smile
Anyway, you have to generate your own excitement. Can't blame others bro!
OK, enough procrastinating, back to work for me...

cheers,

Amen to that buddy!
It's not just some of the people here, I see this at a lot of gaming related forums.
I do think that the cause of it all are the 4 reasons you mentioned, so kudos for that.

I understand the disappointment in RE5, I'm just as let down by that game as most people seem to be, but that was just because Capcom made some really dumb decisions, not because the game industry is going down the drain.

For my part, I am looking forward to FFXIII as least as much as any FF I've ever looked forward to (7, 8, 9 and 10), as well as Bioshock 2, God of War 3, Mass Effect 2, and any and all Kingdom Hearts games down the line.

I'll say Nintendo continues to unimpress for over a year now though, yes.
But the second they announce a new proper Mario, I'll be instantly on board.

EDGE usually gives pretty low scores in comparison to other publications. Because of that, EDGE is more serious and hardcore, it seems. More for grown-ups. When it comes to music, it's far more respectable not to pump out "5 stars" and words like "fan" all the time. To criticize is to make ones own character, I think, and I believe that quality is innate to our biology. Look at old people who only listen to classical music and consider everything else to be crap; I believe it is about distinguishing oneself from the "other" (or younger) men, which one has to prove oneself better than, mostly to secure women and material wealth.

As I grow older, I guess that I will develop towards a more artsy direction, enjoying artistic games more and more, and generally dismiss mainstream stuff as mainstream crap. If I don't do that, I guess that I will become more like the "games were much better before" type. But that won't mirror the quality of the games in reality, but differences in my social world and my own personality.

By the way, this discussion never ends. It seems to pop up non-stop. And I can't stop contributing to it. I shouldn't be talking about this, as I rarely play games at all, except on Sundays after wet Saturdays. I rarely enjoy playing them, whether new or old. In fact I played FF12 yesterday, and although I consider it a very well-made game, I don't find much fun in it. It's addictive, but without euphoria. Things I do enjoy is for example to flirt, to talk to other people, to write, to read and to listen to music.

So, yeah, I agree a lot with you, avatar! and amazingu. :-)

Don't worry, that's a perfectly natural reaction wink
