Anyone else having trouble connecting to the Wii Shop?  Two Mondays in a row now, I can't get in.  I know my Wii is talking to my router since I have no trouble using the Mii, Forecast, and Internet Channels, but my system hangs when it gets to the second stage of the shop process (the one that says "Connecting..." at the top with he blue circle in the middle).  It just sits on this screen until I disconnect the power cord (the Home, Power, and Reset buttons all do nothing on this screen).

Mondays are new release days.  I have noticed an increase in time to connect on Monday probably because of all those Wiis that are selling and connecting to the Shop Channel.

Which is funny, considering all of the terrible post-Christmas Virtual Console releases.  I can't imagine anyone but diehard shmup fans have been happy over the selection of games we've gotten lately.  And next week is just a bunch of Genesis games that already got released on Sega genesis Collection for the PS2.  Crap on that.

Considering that the shoot-em-up genre has been severely neglected in modern-day consoles, these games are very much welcomed by that community.

While some Genesis games have been released on the PS2, some people are still interested in the Virtual Console version simply, because they don't have to insert discs anymore.   Everything is in one place.  Not cost-effective, but I can understand the reasoning in that.

Yeah, that's why I check every Monday to see what's new.  My problem is that it just won't connect for me on Mondays anymore (or at least not the last two Mondays).  I was able to get on early this morning, but I'd really like to be able to check at my leisure instead of having to purposely pick a time when I know traffic will be low.  I sent an email to Nintendo's customer service department alluding to my belief that their servers can't handle the load.  If nothing else, it'll be interesting to see exactly how they dodge the question.

Simple.  They won't respond.  Companies use the "we're too busy to answer everybody" defense all the time.

And Mario World, and Donkey Kong Country, and Contra 3, and Mario RPG, and Zelda LttP, and Mario's Super Picross, and...

Yeah, Nintendo of America is screwing us over big time by sitting on all of the good stuff.  Honestly, is one less shmup and one AAA title *so* much to ask?

Ryu Jan 18, 2007

It goes to a screen shot of A Link to the Past, the title screen shot, as it will appear on the Wii Shop when Nintendo actually releases it.  Someone has found a way to get to the Wii Shop and to see title screens of all the games released and sometimes those set to be released; notice that it does go to wii.com.  This is only the second week this has been done, but assuming it is true for next Monday as it was for last Monday then LoZ:ALttP should go up for the SNES, along with these three Genesis titles:  Bonanza Bros, Comix Zone, and Gain Ground.

For more on it, check the discussion page at Wikipedia.

I just connected with ease and downloaded A Link to the Past.

I haven't tried to connect today yet, but Nintendo did get back to me in the form of a BS automated response pointing me to links to their online FAQs.  The letter said if I wanted a real reply, I'd have to send my question again.  Lame.

Well, I dug a little deeper into my Wii Shop issues.  Lately, I've only been able to get on in the early morning, despite no trouble with any of the Wii's other online services.  So today I tried in the evening again, figuring that since it wasn't Monday, I might have some luck.  Nope.

I read through all of Nintendo's online help stuff for setting up the Wii online and tried two things: changing my router's mode and its broadcast channel.  Now, I don't think there'd be any interference since I don't have any cordless phones or anything, but changing the mode from B Only to Mixed seems to have had an impact.  I originally had it set to B Only because I wanted the DS to get as clean a signal as possible, but I guess that wasn't necessary.

On Mixed, for whatever reason, I can now get into the Shop.  Now, the true test will be on Monday when traffic is heavier, but it's interesting.  It's not like G is that much faster than B, especially since both protocols transmit data faster locally than what I'm getting over the cable line anyway.  I have noticed that the Internet and News Channels run faster now, but they worked pretty well on B Only too.  Now I'm wondering if Nintendo has set up the shop to give logon priority based on lag or something.  Hmmm.

Also, just for the record, the Wii can't get on the internet at all in G Only mode, though it does recognize the Access Point (this is a documented issue on Nintendo's site, but it's not clear if it's universal or only affects certain routers).

Sounds like a coincidence.  If the Wii doesn't connect as G only, then it only supports B, and setting your router to mixed would still cause it to connect with 802.11B and wouldn't make any difference.  G is a LOT faster than B, almost 5 times as fast and of course, you're limited by the speed given by your ISP.  If the Wii was connecting to the internet before without problems, then changing the wireless channel shouldn't make any difference.  It must be that the Wii shop is just over-burdened.

I don't know.  Nintendo's docs say that you will get better performance over G and they say that G-Only mode may not work.  I do know that the Internet and News Channels both went faster after the switch, if that's any indication.

I had no problems getting on this evening, the first Monday I've been able to do that since early December.  While I can't prove my switching to Mixed Mode on the router cleared up the problem, it sure looks that way.

I haven't been able to get into the Wii Shop Channel for almost a week. Has anyone else been having problems?

Edit: And it's so damn annoying, it just sits there going "Connecting. Please wait..." and it does nothing! You can't even reset the stupid thing without unplugging the system. Way to go Nintendo...

That's the exact problem I was having before switching my router to Mixed Mode.  Since then, the problem has gone away.
