The slowdown is really pissing me off... and it's not just in battle. It is most aggravating when even the text can't decide what speed to fly across the screen.

Isn't it ironic a machine from over ten years ago runs this game better than of the current ones - or at least those it's been ported to?

Not really. You answered your own question with the word "ported." Of course it's going to run best on the machine it was designed for.
After playing FF3 on SNES for almost 30 hours recently and reading the translation difference FAQ for FFVIA, I have to say that the changes they made are total rubbish. Seriously, who would rename Tritoch to Valigarmanda?! I'll tell you - some jackass at SE. F this port.
Actually, he's called Valigarmanda in the original FF6 Japanese version, if I'm not mistaken.

Tell me about it. They altered Kefka's legendary "Son of a Submariner!" to something infinitely dumber. Can't remember what, though.
Edit: "Son of a Sandworm!"
ヴァルガルマンダ [Varugarumanda] is the original name.

Not to me it ain't.
"son of a submariner" was my "spoony bard" line for Final Fantasy VI.
an extremely sad state of affairs.
