Meryl's death

Because I saw that little nugget of info I was waiting for her to get taken out by some sniper during the ending scene.  AAAARRRRRGHH!!

Eh. I just played the final battle of MGS again this morning and after the REX fight the game went downhill. The last segments of the game were easily the worst parts, notably the drawn-out hand-to-hand fight with Liquid and the frustrating jeep chase scene. I guess it's satisfying once it's over, but the last 15 minutes of gameplay rank as my absolute least favorite part of the game.

I will agree with this word-for-word.  It's a shame, especially because the game really shone up to that point.  The hand-to-hand fighting was very clunky and it took a good 10 tries to actually finish off Liquid before the time went off or I died.  What's with the health bar showing no visible life and him still being able to fight?!

The jeep chase scene was decent, although you think Snake would be able to whip around that machine gun faster.  Meh.

SPOILER I did like the ending conversation with "Solidus", the President.  Does this carry into Metal Gear Solid 2?

My end time was around 10 hours.  Perfect.

Yep, it does.  Ahh, the first of the end-of-game "bombshell cliffhanger" dialogue exchanges -- a series staple.  MGS1's was one of the better ones though.

Keep in mind that whether you decided to endure or submit during the torture alters this exchange of dialogue a bit, too.  Also, if you submitted, the final codec conversation between Campbell and Snake reveals a rather crucial nugget of information regarding Campbell and Meryl's relationship -- a plot thread that carries over to MGS4.

It's no secret that Meryl does live in MGS4, but both endings have story elements that could be considered canonical to the series.

Told ya. ;)  I'd say MGS2 clocks in around the same time -- probably longer, given the lengthier codec sequences.  But MGS3 is a satisfying 20+ hours of what feels like a lot more gameplay.
