I understand:

PS2 is BWC with PS1 games.
Wii is BWC with GC games.
360 is somewhat BWC with Xbox games.

PS3 plays...only PS3 games (and after a year of indecisiveness that has confused the hell out of everyone) Meaning you have two slots in your entertainment room that SHOULD be condensed into one.

I suppose you could make the argument with the PS3 that if you want a decent version of the console, you need a launch model.  I can't believe they're replacing everything with a non-backwards compatible 80 gig system in the fall.  Thanks for convincing me that I never really want your system, guys (but that's a whole other discussion).

Copy and paste this for me as well

I completely don't understand this mentality.    If you guys are so damn concerned about playing PSX and PS2 games, why do you want a $400 system to do that when you can get a PS2 for much, much less.  I bought a PS3 so I could play PS3 games.  I couldn't care less if it plays PSX or PS2 games.

I thought the whole reason was so PS1 games don't look like crap on a HD TV.

To the best of my knowledge, all PS3s play PSX games.  It's only PS2 games where things vary by model.

Probably didn't help that Sony liked to use the "full backwards compatibility" as a sales point for the PS3, and then change their mind with a lie.

You know, I actually haven't played a PS1 game in...wow, probably 2 years (went on a bit of Suikoden 2 nostalgia trip). So that's where that mix-up probably occurred.

BC would've been a wonderful thing for me...... if it was region-free and could play my imports.  Close to two-thirds of my Playstation collection (particularly PSOne) are imports.

Upscaling.  The backwards compatible PS3s have the ability to make PS2 games look better on an HDTV.  Last weekend I got to see what Ys VI looks like on an HD LCD set through a regular PS2 and it was absolutely terrible.  I didn't really believe that PS2 games could look that bad.  It's going to be an issue for me at some point, since those TVs are the way everyone is going.  There's also that little thing where it's great not having to hook up 300 systems underneath one TV.  The most infuriating thing is that I saw an interview yesterday with Jack Tretton where he mentioned that BC wasn't even costing them that much.  So they're not even making much more money by making all their "blah blah backwards compatibility is a key feature of the brand blah blah" statements into complete lies.

Regarding Upscaling and HDTVs, are people just throwing out their "NORMAL" tv sets?  What kind of economic recession means ditching a WORKING SET just because it's got a cathode tube instead of plasma?

Don't people just keep their normal set around "in the other room" just in case they want to use that older technology WITH something like their older consoles (then it won't look like shit anymore?).

In my case, I still haven't gotten my own TV since moving back to Japan.  When I move out into an apartment soon, there probably won't BE "the other room" to get an extra tube TV and put it in there.
